Part I: Chinese-English Translation

The greatest advantage of a walkman is that it allows you to listen to music and radio programs anytime, anywhere.  No matter whether you're jogging or waiting for a bus, if you feel bored, you can listen to music to help the time pass.  Even if you turn up the volume, you won't disturb others, either.  However, some doctors have begun to worry that more and more people will suffer hearing damage if they get into the habit of listening to a walkman for a long time.

My name is Kevin C. Liu and I am writing in response to your advertisement for the position of translator. I will graduate in May from Harvard University with a degree in English literature. While at Harvard I have done translation for various professors. For example, the Chinese literature department often hires me to translate English works into Chinese and vice versa, I have found translation to be fascinating and hope to continue in this line of work after graduation. Therefore, I feel that working as a translator at a world renowned magazine such as Formosa Features Magazine is an ideal situation for me. As for my salary and starting date I am expecting NT$50,000 a month and would be ready to start as soon as 1 June .

Part I: Chinese-English Translation

In the past, it was both inconvenient and dangerous for people to travel long distance.  It normally took travelers several months or even several years to reach their destinations. In addition, accidents could easily happen during the trip. The invention of the airplane has not only reduced travel time greatly, but also enhanced safety. With the development of technology, it doesn't seem to be an impossible dream to take a trip to the moon.

According to this graph, less than twenty motor accidents per four hours occur between the intervals of 2:00 AM to 6:00 AM and 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. At all other intervals more than thirty accidents occur per four hours. The major reason for this phenomenon is the number of drivers on the road. When there are more drivers on the road the probability that an accident will occur also increases. From the hours of 2:00 AM to 6:00 AM most people are asleep, and therefore there are less accidents. From the hours of 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM many motorists are at work or at school so there are less accidents.

However, the rate of accident occurrence is not only connected to the amount of motorists at a given time. It is also connected to visibility. The accident rate from the time intervals 6:00 AM to 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM is less than the intervals 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM and 10:00 PM to 2:00 AM. This has to do with visibility.

Since the government cannot directly control the number of motorists on the street, the only way to reduce the number of accidents is to increase the amount of lighting on streets at night. This includes adding more street lamps and requiring all motorists to use their headlights. By improving visibility, accidents will occur at night with less frequency.

The number of accidents is directly proportional to the number of vehicles on the street at a given time and visibility. However, at present the city government of Taipei is not able to directly control the number of drivers. The only factor which the government can control is visibility. Consequently, to reduce the number of accidents, the city government of Taipei should first add more lighting to the city streets.

Part I: Chinese-English Translation

My cousin has been living in a dormitory since her freshman year. She chose to live in the dorm mainly for the sake of safety and convenience. But now my cousin is upset with some of the dorm regulations. Once she was in the lab doing a chemistry experiment until midnight, and when she got back, she found the door to the dorm was locked. Because of this incident, she is considering moving out of the dorm next semester.

Part II: Guided Writing

The use of cell phones has grown to the point that you can’t go on a bus without hearing someone’s ringing. All phones can be very convenient for people. All phone owners can be reached almost at anytime. They don’t have to search around for a pay phone or a phone card. So the growth of cell phone use is because of convenience.

There are times when I wish I had a cell phone, but then I realize there are downfalls to having one. I would never escape work if I can always be reached, then there is more likelihood of having to do something for work. Also, it is embarrassing when a cell phone rings at an inappropriate time such as church. Cell phones are also a hazard because people use them while driving. Drivers using cell phones aren’t paying attention and can cause accidents.

All phones do have good uses. If a person finds he is lost or in a dangerous place, he can call someone for help if a person is late, he can just call the other person without searching for a pay phone. Still, I wouldn’t want a cell phone. I can’t afford one anyway.
