This Day in History June 16

The Great Depression was a dark time in American history. Many people were out of work and didn't have enough food to feed their families. Everyone was feeling low and helpless. President Roosevelt passed the National Industrial Recovery Act (NIRA) on this date in 1933. Everyone hoped the NIRA would help the economy grow. However, many unexpected problems happened. Only a few months later, measures had to be taken to fix the NIRA. Although it was thought of as a general failure, the NIRA did set up the public works program, which created jobs for people and got many dams and railroads built.
