Altec’s 874A Segovia 3-way Speaker System

The Segovia ’s performance is total — solid, tight, accurate. True low frequencies are the critical point in speaker design. In this area, the 874A is unsurpassed. No boominess, no distortion, reaching to the full true fundamental lows. Mid-frequencies are vibrant and alive. A large percentage of program material concentrates in this range of the audio spectrum. It is therefore imperative that the reproduction of these mid-band frequencies be clearly and cleanly delineated. Highs are crisp, clear and transparent. The entire audible spectrum is reproduced virtually void of all coloration.

The 3-way Segovia incorporates all the Dynamic Force design concepts which are featured in Altec’s larger floor standing systems. Housed in a contemporary cabinet with an attractive fretwork grille, is a completely new 12-inch frame Dynamic Force woofer capable of producing an extended low frequency range with very low distortion characteristics. A special Altec 405A 4-inch speaker provides a smooth mid-frequency response with wide dispersion characteristics. The high frequency tweeter is a high quality dome radiator with excellent dispersion and virtually flat response to the limits of audibility. The dividing networks are full 12 dB per octave filters at 500 Hz and 4,000 Hz. Mid-range and high frequency attenuator controls are provided on the rear of the enclosure.

Dynamic Force Loudspeaker

Altec has developed a new type of low frequency speaker. It features an extremely long-throw, three-inch voice coil with edge wound, copper ribbon and a 17 pound magnetic structure. This magnet structure, which is larger than in comparable speaker systems, is capable of controlling the motion of the cone to an extent not normally found in infinite baffle systems. Operating in a properly designed and sealed infinite baffle enclosure, this uniquely designed speaker unit is capable of producing an unusually large force capability. The result is greatly improved low frequency transient performance. Other benefits include better linearity, extended low frequency response, and reduced distortion.
