You are heading to the subway station on your way to work. However, when you reach the turnstile, you realize that your transit pass is out of money. When you reach into your pockets for change, you find them empty. What do you do? If you have a bit of time and an empty plastic bottle or two, you may just have the solution to your problem.

In Beijing, special vending machines have been introduced to the city’s subway system. Commuters can put empty plastic bottles into the machines and have value added to their transit passes. It takes the machines about 30 seconds to process a bottle and credit the money to their cards. Similar devices that are based on the concept of recycling for rewards have also been set up in a variety of locations in the US, Japan, and Brazil.
