Don't assume everyone gets to travel often like those of us who live abroad. Of course, who wants plane food? But for a lot of people in Taiwan who dont' get to travel on the plane, it's a big deal.
Besides, flight attendents in Asia are usually viewed as "pretty, elegant, sophisticated, and well-traveled" as opposed to "trashy, old, low class, and unsophisticated" in the US. There is obviously a difference in how flight attendents are viewed in Asian countries vs. the US in terms of social status. Try to put yourself in other people's shoes (in this case, possibly middle class Taiwanese and also students who don't get to travel aboard but hang out in Gong Guan/Tai-Da area).. maybe you will know why it's such a big deal to eat airplane food for them.
