While many have argued that the new Type 095 and 096 subs will be built there, it is only now that the infrastructure is largely ready. The new submarines will be important if the PLAN wishes to patrol the open Pacific, or routinely venture into the Indian Ocean. Analysis of commercial imagery shows a new launch barge has recently been completed at the site. From an intelligence standpoint, this is an important indicator. In an unclassified analysis, the U.S. Office of Naval Intelligence (ONI) says it expects China’s submarine fleet to grow from around 66 boats today to 76 by 2030. This will include 6 more nuclear-powered attack submarines, which is what the Bohai yard at Huludao builds. Others, such as Captain Captain James E. Fanell who was Director of Intelligence and Information Operations for the U.S. Navy’s Pacific Fleet, put their estimates higher. Fanell recently projected around 110 submarines by 2030. China is preparing to commission its first-ever next-generation nuclear-powered attack submarine (SSN). Satellite images taken earlier this month and analyzed by military experts on Sunday, February 22, for the South China Morning Post show the Type 095 docked at the Huludao shipyard in Liaoning province. The vessel appears to be undergoing outfitting, the media outlet notes. Its launch marks a technological turning point for Beijing, which is accelerating the submarine arms race to catch up with the United States.. .

Pump-jets reduce cavitation and significantly lower underwater noise at high speeds, making detection far more difficult. The submarine also appears to feature an X-shaped stern control surface arrangement, marking the first known use of such a design on a Chinese nuclear submarine. The X-tail configuration improves manoeuvrability, especially in shallow waters and during complex evasive manoeuvres, while also contributing to hydrodynamic efficiency and reduced turbulence noise. It is also thought to use retractable bow planes integrated into the hull, rather than being mounted on the sail.
