Insects face challenges coping with the elevated temperatures induced by climate change, potentially leading to a risk of overheating. Insects Struggle with Rising Temperatures Insects have difficulties handling the higher temperatures brought on by climate change, and might risk overheating. The ability to reproduce is also strongly affected by rising temperatures, even in northern areas of the world, according to a new study from Lund University in Sweden. Insects cannot regulate their own body temperature, which is instead strongly influenced by the temperature in their immediate environment. In the current study, the researchers studied two closely related species of damselflies in Sweden. The goal was to understand their robustness and ability to tolerate changes in temperature. To study this, the researchers used a combination of field work in southern Sweden and infrared camera technology (thermography), a technology that makes it possible to measure body temperature in natural conditions. This information was then connected to the survival rates and reproductive success of the damselflies in their natural populations. Survival vs. Reproduction The results show that survivorship of these damselflies was high at relatively low temperatures, 15 – 20 C ° (59 – 68 F °). The reproductive capacity, on the other hand, was higher at temperatures between 20 and 30 C ° (68 – 86 F °), depending on the species. “There is therefore a temperature-dependent conflict between survival on one hand and the ability to reproduce on the other,” says Erik Svensson, professor at the Department of Biology at Lund University, who led the study. The study also shows that the damselflies ability to handle heat-related stress is limited. Insects are cold-blooded invertebrates, so they rely on external sources such as the sun or hot stones to raise their body temperature. “Our results show that cold-blooded animals can suffer from overheating even if they live far up in the northern hemisphere, and that their ability to buffer their body temperature against rising external temperatures is limited. The results also challenge a popular theory that animals’ plasticity, i. e. their individual flexibility, can help them survive under harsher environmental conditions, such as during heat waves,” says Erik Svensson. Waller, 24 November 2020, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. DOI: 10.1073/pnas.2012454117 Researchers have uncovered an evolutionary “tipping point” affecting fungi growth and shape diversity, highlighting how minor environmental changes can significantly impact evolution. This discovery, based on studies of fungi and water molds, reveals that certain hyphal shapes are favored due to evolutionary constraints. The findings offer new insights into the resilience of species to climate change and the potential for creating targeted antimicrobials against fungal pathogens. Research shows small environmental changes can significantly influence the structures of cells and organisms. Scientists have found a “tipping point” in the evolution of fungi that throttles their growth and sculpts their shapes. The findings, published in the journal Cell Reports, demonstrate how small changes in environmental factors can lead to huge changes in evolutionary outcomes. Fungi are nature’s great composters. They wait within the forest floor to feed on fallen trees and autumn leaves, releasing essential nutrients from these plants back into the Earth. Hyphae of the fungus Allomyces arbuscula growing as part of a mycelium. Credit: Maxim Ohairwe Although fungi often bring to mind mushroom caps, fungi also have underground “roots” called mycelia. Mycelia are made up of thousands of interconnected, microscopic, finger-like cells called hyphae that grow into vast networks. Hyphae worm their way through the soil by growing from their tips. To do so, they inflate themselves, similar to the long balloons used to make balloon animals. Their elongated forms allow hyphae to locate and consume nutrients within the soil. But not all hyphae are the same shape: some have rounded tips, while others are pointed. The hyphae of water molds—fungus-like pathogens that cause blight in crops—are particularly pointy. The fitness landscape of hyphae showing that natural shapes are constrained by a tipping point. Credit: Maxim Ohairwe Exploring Hyphal Shapes “A major challenge in biology is to identify the specific evolutionary factors that determine the shape—or form—of a given organism,” said Enrique Rojas, assistant professor of biology at New York University and the study’s senior author. To understand the reasons for different shapes of hyphae, Rojas and his colleagues combined theory and experiments to investigate fungi and water molds from across nature. They first employed physics-based models of inflationary tip growth to determine all possible shapes of hyphae. Surprisingly, the shapes of actual hyphae found in nature assumed only a small subset of the possible shapes. An Achlya bisexualis hypha growing. Credit: Maxim Ohairwe The researchers hypothesized that the limited shapes observed in nature reflected “survival of the fittest,” and that the many possible shapes not observed in real fungi were, for some reason, weaker evolutionary rejects. To explore this idea, they examined the growth rate of hyphae with different shapes to create a fitness landscape for hyphae. “Our eureka moment was when we realized that the shapes of hyphae were intimately connected to their ability to grow fast,” said Maxim Ohairwe, a PhD student in NYU’s Department of Biology and the lead author of the study. Hyphal mycelium. Credit: Maxim Ohairwe Fitness Landscapes and Evolution A fitness landscape is like a topographic map that visualizes the evolution of an organism: every species wanders through its fitness landscape by testing whether or not random mutations in its genes increase its growth rate, or fitness. A species only stops its restless wandering when a new mutation decreases its fitness—that is, when it is at a fitness peak. However, Rojas’s team found that fitness landscapes can be much more rich than a system of peaks and valleys. In fact, they found that the fitness landscape for hyphae contained an overhanging cliff, or tipping point, and that this acts as a barrier to evolution, strongly limiting the shapes of fungal hyphae. Accordingly, they predicted that hyphae with shapes near the brink of the tipping point would be particularly vulnerable to small environmental, chemical, or genetic changes. An Achlya bisexualis hypha that was treated with a chemical that blocks subcellular transport. The treatment caused the hypha to elongate much more slowly and with a strange nub shape not found in nature. Credit: Maxim Ohairwe The researchers tested their prediction by treating fungi near the tipping point with small amounts of chemicals that affected hyphal growth. They used one chemical that reduces pressure within the hyphae and another derived from a sea sponge that blocks the hypha’s ability to deliver cellular components to the tip of the cell. Both treatments caused the same dramatic effect: the hyphae elongated much more slowly and with a strange nub shape not found in nature. “Our findings explain hyphal shape diversity in an enormous, diverse, and important group of species,” said Rojas. “More broadly, they also demonstrate an important new evolutionary principle: that fitness landscapes can have instabilities, or tipping points, that impose strict constraints on complex traits, like biological form.” The researchers believe that their results have critical implications for our understanding of many ecological and evolutionary systems. For example, those species whose evolution is subject to a tipping point may be the most vulnerable to the gradual increase in temperature caused by climate change. Their findings could also aid in the development of new antimicrobials against disease-causing fungi by identifying vulnerabilities in their growth associated with an evolutionary tipping point. African clawed frogs are known for their flat bodies, vocal organs, and claws on the first three toes of the hind feet. Credit: Adam Bewick Researchers at McMaster University discovered eight different sex chromosomes in 11 species of African clawed frogs, revealing surprising genetic diversity. The study found these chromosomes in genome regions with high genetic recombination, challenging existing theories about sex-determining gene evolution. This research highlights how crucial biological traits like sexual differentiation can evolve rapidly through newly developed genes. Genetic Diversity in African Clawed Frogs Researchers at McMaster University have discovered surprising genetic diversity in how sex is determined in the African clawed frog, one of the most extensively studied amphibians in the world. Through genomic analysis, scientists identified eight distinct sex chromosomes across 11 species of the frog. Many of these chromosomes may carry newly evolved genes responsible for triggering male or female development. Before this study, researchers were aware of only three sex chromosomes in the species, making this a groundbreaking discovery in the field of genetic evolution. The African clawed frog is used as a model organism for biological research because of its close evolutionary relationship to humans. Credit: Adam Bewick “In these frogs, we’ve discovered extraordinary variation even among closely related species, which allows us to explore how important things like sex determination evolve rapidly,” says Ben Evans, a professor in the Department of Biology at McMaster and lead author of a new study in the journal Molecular Biology and Evolution. Evans conducted the work with colleagues from the Czech Republic, France, the USA, and South Africa. The African clawed frog is used as a model organism for biological research because of its close evolutionary relationship to humans, and because early development occurs externally, allowing fundamental processes to be readily observed and manipulated. The frogs are found in sub-Saharan Africa and live in slow-moving or stagnant water. They are known for their flat bodies, vocal organs that can produce sound underwater, and claws on the first three toes of the hind feet, which they use to tear food apart. Surprising Locations of Sex-Determining Genes In this study, the researchers pinpointed the locations of the newly identified sex chromosomes, which added to their surprise. Prevailing theory had suggested that sex-determining genes might typically arise in regions of the genome with a low rate of recombination – the exchange of genetic material within each parent that creates new mixtures of traits in their offspring. Evolutionary Insights into Sex Determination Instead, they found these newly evolved genes were almost universally located in regions where genetic recombination is high, raising questions about how and why the genetic basis of very important biological traits – such as sexual differentiation – may evolve so quickly, and how new genes and genetic function arise. “If you conducted these same tests within some even older groups such as most mammals or all birds, you would find that their sex chromosomes are all the same,” explains Evans. “But this group of frogs — in sharp contrast — has incredible variation.” “It is very likely that new genes arose many times in these frogs to orchestrate sexual differentiation, by acting as an ‘on-off switch’ or a ‘male-female switch’ at the top of the developmental cascade,” he says. Historical Context and Ongoing Research In 2015, Evans—who has studied the African clawed frog for over two decades—led a team which discovered six new species and added another back to the list of known species, providing the foundational information for this current work.
