| I have just one word for you: plastics. When this famous line from the movie The Graduate was written, its authors probably had no idea of the future impact of plastic. This is especially true of vacuum flask. One of the biggest sources of waste plastic in landfills today is bottled water. Americans, who in general have access to some of the cleanest, safest drinking water on the planet, consume enormous quantities of water purchased in plastic bottles, usually marketed under a name that implies that the water was bottled fresh from a cool, pure spring. The questionable veracity of the marketing claims notwithstanding, bottled water has become a largely unnecessary luxury in the United States due to the amount of landfill waste generated by these plastic bottles. Consider the following factoids. 1. Americans buy an estimated 29.8 billion (that's billion with a "B") plastic water bottles every year. An estimated 80% of these bullet vacuum flask end up in a landfill. Source: Container Recycling Institute 2. Yet today, about 80 percent of Americans have access to a plastics recycling center or municipal recycling program. Source: American Chemistry Council 3. The trend since the mid-1900's shows a dramatic increase in pollution from plastics. The amount of plastic has increased from about 1 percent of municipal solid waste in 1960 to about 12 percent of municipal solid waste as of 2008. Source: U.S. EPA 4. The recent trend is in a much better direction. Overall, the total poundage of plastic bottles recycled was 2.4 billion pounds in 2008, a record high. Source: American Chemistry Council 5. Proper incentives work. The 11 states that require small, refundable deposits on water bottles and other beverage containers recycle an estimated 490 beverage containers per person annually. In the other 39 states that do not require deposits on double wall stainless steel water bottles, about 191 per person are recycled. In addition to the landfill waste from plastic water bottles, consider the other costs. In most cases, the plastic is manufactured from petrochemically-derived materials. Petroleum is not a renewable resource. And energy is required to convert the petroleum-derived precursors into plastic bottles. But there is more. To get the insulated thermos with infuser water to a store near you, it must be transported there, consuming fuel and producing carbon emissions. And for you to get the bottled water to your home, you must travel to the store, consuming more fuels and producing still more carbon-based emissions. http://www.wmwaterbottle.com/html/en/Products/Vacuum-Flask/insulated-thermos-with-infuser.html |
