(V)                 To Inform - English Oral Presentation in 1 Semester  傳達式演講 - 3個月讓成都學生說流利英文


My course was called "Oral Presentation Training in US English". As we know by the name, there is a big part about “how to perform in front the audience”. In my previous speech "How to learn English?" in China, I usually had about one and a half hour, so I could only put the "informative speech" and "persuasive speech" into my contents along with some previous teaching experience.

I'll introduce the informative speech now.

我所開的課程是“台上英語口語訓練”,顧名思義,有另外很大的一個課題是在教導學生“台上如何表現”。演講時,通常因時間有限,我只把“傳達式演講” 、“說服式演講”和一些過去的教學經驗放進講題裡“如何學好英文?

今天我來介紹傳達式演講。

For a student in the university, no matter from which department, there will be more or less some oral presentations, usually as final exams. When I was teaching in the Southwest Jiao Tong University, I had a class of the department of Business and Administration. The students from this department had much more chances of presenting on the stage than students from other departments.

These presentations are very important for college students, but most of them didn’t receive special training on this part, so they always pushed the last person in their group to do it for them.

I collected a lot of materials from other speech courses back in my college time, my own presenting experience every time and even the good samples that I had seen before. I summarized a widespread tips to informative speeches. Once after the class, Wendy a girl from this department told me in person, “Everyone who took your English class was copying your ways for the marketing final presentation. They just made it into Chinese version.”

“Don’t worry. That’s not copying. I’m happy that you guys learned it and used it in a good way.”

上了大學不管哪一個科系,多多少少會要上台報告。我在西南交大時,工商管理系的英文課也是由我教的,他們的上台報告機會可就非常的多了。這些報告對大學生來說非常重要,可是大部分的人卻都沒有受過這方面的專門訓練,總是推給同學上台。

我在編寫這一段教材時,把很多以前我自己在上大學時,從別的演講課聽來的、每次上台報告經驗累積來的甚至是看別人報告偷學來的等等,通通整理編進教材。後來期末時一位工商管理系的同學偷偷跑來和我說,他們班上大家在其他市场营销科目的報告時,也都用了我這些演講方法,換成中文而已。

I always made my students into groups for this part of the courses, because the informative speech usually required lots of skills that the college students have experienced or handled to a certain degree already, sometimes even better than I in some particular parts. For instance, the visual aids were usually with special art design, and some students were really born to do it. I mainly helped with the English oral training part, and let the students learn from the each other’s works and competition with other students.

這部分的課程我通常分組進行。因為傳達式演講涵蓋很多層面的能力,而大學生通常也已經有一定程度的經歷,在很多方面可能都比我來的好。例如說,報告時輔助的美工設計。我主要做的英文口說輔導以外,同學常常可以從彼此間或各組競爭中學到不少。

Informative speech includes the topic selecting, the formal outlines composing, visual aids preparing, PowerPoint making, cooperation among group mates and the design of presentation. Today I will only talk about the last part in the speech "How to learn English?".

傳達式演講包括題材的選定、提綱撰寫、視覺元素準備、PowerPoint製作、組員協調和演講設計。我們今天“如何學好英文?”來介紹演講設計的部分。

I got an idea when I was having the course of Facebook comments. That is, I made a simple assignment before the informative speech training for my students as the bridging. I wanted each student to make a constructive question about the photo they uploaded and answered it three times from different aspects.

My students earlier without this step of training used to have problems selecting proper topic and writing the outlines for their informative speech. With this one-question-three-answers step, most of the students will be able to make a clearly structured outline report to the audience.

我有一次在教前一堂Facebook評論時突然得到這個靈感,我讓學生們在傳達式演講之前做一個簡單訓練以作連接。我要每位同學對自己上傳的照片提出一個富建設性的問題,並自己做三次不同角度的回答。

我早期的學生沒有受過這個步驟的訓練,在設計傳達式演講時常常沒有辦法做得很好,有可能是議題過大或過小以至於無法在演講時間內做最棒的發揮。有著這個一問三答的步驟後,大部分的同學便能很有條理的做出提綱、各層次清晰、清楚的報告給觀眾聽。

When these students make a successful well-prepared informative speech in English, their oral English skills will be played to maximum, and in the future, they will be very confident when they are delivering the impromptu persuasive speech!

當同學們成功做好一次細心準備後的英文報告,英文表達能力發揮到個人的最大值,將來做即興、隨機應變、說服式的演講時就會變得很有自信!
