Hello, friends.
Welcome to Let’s Talk in English.
My name is Esther.
And my name is Garrett.
We’re here with some tips for you.
And the name of our lesson is:
Cleaning Up
The word clean usually means to clean things or wash them with soap and water.
But often, when we use the phrase clean up, we’re talking about organizing the things in our house to make it look tidy or nice. Right?
Maybe you have lots of things just lying around.
You want to put these things back in the right place.
Then you need to clean up.
Exactly!
We all love staying or living in a clean and nice house without a lot of things lying around.
We want things put away in the right place so we can walk around and everything looks nice.
All right. We all need space.
Now, let’s go to our reading.
No one likes a messy room.
What can you do to clean up?
Get four boxes:
Put trash in the first box. You will throw this away.
Make the second box for things to give away. You do not need these things, so you can give them to friends, family, or a thrift store.
Put things to keep in the third box. You don’t need them every day, but you want to save them for future use.
And some things belong in other places—put them in the fourth box. You can put them away in the right places later.
Thank you, Garrett. That was very helpful.
We learned many ways we can clean.
Now let’s go to today’s “Find It” question.
Our question is:
What will Sam do with the things in the last box?
What will Sam do with the things in the last box?
Well, friends, the answer will be in our lesson today.
And we hope you can find it.
Now let’s go to Sonia with today’s keywords.
Sam
“I was up until midnight cleaning up my messy room.”
“I put things to give away in the second box.”
“But I want to save them for future use.”
“And some things belong in other places.”
“I’ll put them away later.”
You look tired, Sam.
I am. I was up until midnight cleaning up my messy room.
That’s no fun.
I know, but I had to clean it up. I was tired of looking at it.
So, how did you clean it up?
I got four boxes. I put trash in the first box. I put things to give away in the second box.
Today, we start with Julie telling Sam about how he looks.
Julie tells Sam that he looks tired.
Yeah. Do you ever see someone in the office or in your classroom in the morning and notice they look like they did not get enough sleep?
Right. And it’s true—Sam did not sleep very much.
He tells us that he was up until midnight cleaning his messy room.
Midnight is 12 a.m., so he was up late—very late.
And he says:
“I was up until midnight.”
If you’re up until a certain time, that means you’re awake until that time.
You haven’t fallen asleep yet.
But why was he up?
Because he was cleaning up his messy room.
Right. This is a good word for us to learn: the word messy.
If something is not clean—if things are not in the right place—then we can use this word: messy.
So, Sam had a messy room, right?
A messy room has things all over the place.
But we don’t want to be all over the place.
We want to learn more about this word with Sonya.
Sam
“I was up until midnight cleaning up my messy room.”
The sky is very cloudy today.
I am getting really sleepy.
Would you like a tasty treat?
Thank you, Sonya. Well,
if you don’t clean up your room regularly,
then when you do do it,
it will take a lot longer. It won’t be fun.
But Sam says he had to do it, right?
If you have to do something,
you know that you need to do it.
Why did he have to clean up?
Well, he was tired of looking at his messy room, right?
He didn’t like the way it looked.
Maybe it made him uncomfortable.
Sometimes, if you have a messy room,
you might even step on something and hurt yourself.
So it’s good he cleaned things up.
But Julie wants to know how he did this, right?
And Sam tells us that he has a special way of cleaning.
So he got four boxes. A box is like a square
cardboard container where you can put things inside.
Yeah, or made of other materials too.
He got four boxes, and he put trash in the first box.
Of course, trash is things we will throw away.
We do not want them. They’re not useful, right? Maybe
you have some broken things or things
you don’t need anymore.
This will be your trash.
Then, in the second box, he put things to give away.
If you want to give away something,
it means you will give someone what you have.
Now, this is different from letting someone
borrow something or lending it to them. If you give it away,
it’s not yours anymore.
We give away things that are useful to someone else
but not to us, right?
Maybe you have some clothes that you don’t need to wear
anymore, or maybe some pencils or pens that you don’t need.
You can give these away.
Give them away to people who will use them.
Maybe you can start by
asking your friends and family who would like to use this.
Maybe take a picture of them.
Then if no one wants them, look for another place
you can give these things away in your community, friends.
It’s our break time now, don’t go away,
We’ll be right back.
Let’s Talk in English, Let’s Talk in English,
Every day, every day,
That’s the way!
Welcome back.
Garrett, earlier when we talked about things to give away,
you said that we can ask our family and friends if
they want the things
we don’t need anymore
by taking a picture and sending it to them, right?
Many of you probably use group text
messages
or some other apps that let you talk to multiple people
at a time.
I think you could throw up some of those pictures there
and ask
if anyone wants those things that you’re giving away.
That’s a great tip. Let’s continue our lesson.
Good. You can take those things to the thrift store.
And the other two boxes?
I put things to keep in the third box.
I don’t use them a lot,
but I want to save them for future use.
Good idea. And
some things belong in other places.
I put those in the fourth box.
I will put them away later.
Now we’re still talking about the second box.
We say that you can give these things away.
Julie tells Sam that he can also
take these things to the thrift store.
Right, thrift stores are very nice places.
Many people go there all the time.
A thrift store is a special kind of store
that sells second-hand things or used things
for a cheaper price.
If you have things that you don’t want—
things you want to give away—
you can give them to a thrift store, right?
And they’ll take these things for you.
And the money that they make,
they often use it to help other people—
those in need.
Well, Julie wants to know about the last
two boxes. What is Sam going to do with them?
And what is he going to put inside them?
This is a good point. There were four boxes. Well,
Sam says he puts things to keep
in the third box.
Things to keep are things you don’t want to give away.
You still want them.
Now, the things in the third box are
things Sam tells us he does not use a lot.
If you don’t use something a lot,
maybe you use it once or twice a year.
You don’t use it often, yeah.
But he still wants to have these things
for those times when he needs them.
So they’re special to this third box,
and he wants to save them for future use.
That word future is very useful.
The future is any time that happens after now, right?
So future use might be something you might use
in five months or next year.
But you know you still need it.
So future use is the things Sam will put in the third box.
Exactly. And use
is the word Sonya wants to tell us all about. Here she is.
But I want to save them for future use.
I can get things done faster with the use of AI.
I’m keeping these tools for my own use.
Can I use your phone for a second?
Use the scissors to cut the paper in half.
Thank you so much, Sonya. Well,
this sounds like a great way of organizing things that Sam has—
separating things into different categories.
I’m sure that helps him make decisions.
And now we are moving on to the things in the fourth box.
Sam tells us that some things belong in other places.
If something belongs somewhere,
it should be there. That’s where it goes.
We might have places we want our things to go—
we would say they belong there.
And that leads us to the answer to today’s “Find It” question.
Our question is:
What will Sam do with the things in the last box?
He will put them away later. Yes.
In this fourth box, he puts more things he’s going to keep,
but these he will put away later.
If you put something away,
you put it back in a place where you want it to be for a longer time,
right? You put it back in the right place.
I will put them away later
is also today’s calendar phrase:
I will put them away later.
Put away these dishes.
I will put them away later.
Put away these books.
I will put them away later.
Put away these clothes.
I will put them away later.
"Goodbye, I’m leaving!"
"When will you come back?"
"After you put things away?"
Later. I will put them away later.
Maybe Sam has some clothes he needs to fold and put back in the cupboard, or maybe he has a pair of shoes or slippers
he needs to put in the shoe cabinet.
Exactly! When you put things away,
you’re not just leaving them out on the floor
or sitting on your couch.
You put them away in a cupboard or a drawer—
somewhere that is put away—
so you don’t have a messy house, right?
That way, you will have more space.
Well, thanks Sam for showing us the ways you clean up.
Now, messy was one of our key words today,
and we want to review everything we learned.
Let’s review our keywords together.
Here’s our first key word:
Messy
My house is very messy.
Give away
I gave away some of my old things.
Future
I want five rooms in my future house.
Belong
Where does this book belong?
Put away
Put away your phone and go to sleep, friends.
Those are today’s key words. You’re doing a great job!
And now it’s your turn.
The keywords for today are:
messy, give away, future, belong, and put away.
Now it’s your turn to use them in a sentence.
First one:
What are your plans?
You need an adjective here.
You got it: What are your future plans?
Next:
She ___ the food in the kitchen.
Correct: She put the food away in the kitchen.
Next:
Those things ___ in another room. They should not be here.
Good job: Those things belong in another room.
Next:
Clean up your ___ desk.
You’re right: Clean up your messy desk.
Last one:
What are you going to ___?
You’re right: What are you going to give away?
Great job, friends! I’ll see you next time for Your Turn.
You look tired, Sam.
I am. I was up until midnight cleaning up my messy room.
That’s no fun.
I know, but I had to clean it up. I was tired of looking at it.
So how did you clean it up?
I got four boxes.
I put trash in the first box.
I put things to give away in the second box.
Good. You can take those things to the thrift store.
And the other two boxes?
I put things to keep in the third box.
I don’t use them a lot, but I want to save them for future use.
Good idea.
And some things belong in other places.
I put those in the fourth box.
I will put them away later.
One, two—let’s review!
Today we’re talking about messy rooms.
Oh, I know all about messy rooms—my house has some.
Don’t you get tired of looking at the mess?
Yes, I know I should clean up, but how?
I have a great tip.
Well, tell me—how can I clean things up?
Get four boxes.
Four boxes?
Yes. Put trash in the first box.
I can do that. What about the second box?
Put things to give away.
Oh! And take those things to the thrift shop.
Yes, that’s right.
The third box is for things to keep.
Ooh, I will need a really big box for that—
I want to keep a lot of things for future use.
Hmm. In the last box, put things that belong in other places.
Oh, so box four is for things to put away later.
That’s right.
Now go clean your messy house!
Okay, but where can I get four boxes?
Okay Grandpa, it’s your turn.
My turn?
Yes, it’s your turn to answer the questions.
Oh great, well, I’m always ready. What’s the first question?
Why is Sam tired?
Sam is tired because he was up until midnight.
That’s right—he stayed up until midnight.
Why did he stay up so late?
He was really busy.
Busy doing what?
Uh-oh—now I remember. He was cleaning up his room.
Because?
Because his room was messy. Messy, messy!
Yes—and he was tired of looking at it.
That’s right. Any other questions?
Yes—what do you do when your room is messy?
Well, when my room is messy and I get tired of looking at it—
I close my eyes.
You close your eyes?
Yes—then I don’t have to look at it.
Why don’t you just clean up the mess?
Well, that’s a good idea.
But why not?
I can’t clean it up.
Why not?
I don’t have four boxes.
Oh, that’s right!
You need a box to put away, a box to keep,
a box to give away, and a box to throw away.
Oh, so confusing!
Friends, today Sam gave us some tips on cleaning.
He uses the four-box method.
Yes, he separates his things into different categories.
Some of these things he will throw away or give away.
Other things he will keep and put away later, right?
And other things he will see who wants them—
and he will share his things with others.
Garrett, can you give us a tip on how you clean?
Well, I do think it’s important to decide
which things you don’t want to keep.
It can be hard to make those decisions,
but it will make your house less messy and more clean.
Right! And I think one thing we can do is:
we can take pictures of some good memories.
Sometimes I like to hold on to things from the past,
but I can take a picture of it,
and then I can give that thing away to someone who can use it.
That’s a good point.
And if you need to, maybe buy a few more boxes or cabinets
so you have more space to put things away.
Well, friends, thanks for learning with us today.
We’ll see you again tomorrow—right here on Let’s Talk in English.
Goodbye!

hello everyone, welcome to Let’s Talk in English.
My name is Garrett.
And my name is Esther.
Today, we have our Tips lesson.
Yes, we do! Remember, our title is Cleaning Up.
This means putting away things that are not in the right place—
put them where they belong in your house so it’s not so messy.
Right, and in our Tips lessons, we give you information that will help you in life.
And yesterday, we heard about Sam’s four boxes cleaning method.
All right, let’s review it.
What do we put in the first box?
Oh, remember—these are things to throw away in the trash.
Things that no one else would want to use, and you don’t want to keep.
Right. Maybe you have some broken things—you can throw these away.
And in the second box, Sam will put things that he wants to give away to others.
These are things you don’t need anymore, but others can still use them.
You can even give them to a thrift shop.
Yes, they will love to take those things!
This might be old books you’ve already read,
or clothes you can’t wear anymore, but they’re still perfectly fine.
And in our third box, we are going to put some things away for future use.
These are not things we use often.
And in our last box, we’ll put things where they belong—because everything needs a home.
Now, let’s go to our Find It question.
Our question is: What should Greg throw away?
What should Greg throw away?
Friends, the answer is in our lesson today—
and so are some great new keywords.
Here’s Sonia to teach them.
Greg問Susie:
How do you keep your desk so neat and organized?
Greg
So you don’t end up with things all over your desk.
Susie
When you buy a new thing, get rid of an old thing.
I should throw away broken things.
May I ask you a question, Susie?
Sure.
How do you keep your desk so neat and organized?
Well, right after I use something, I put it away.
So you don’t end up with things all over your desk.
Right. I try to do that at home too.
If I don’t do that, my house gets messy very quickly.
That’s true for me too. I also have a place for everything.
That way, things stay organized.
Today, we start with Greg asking Susie a question,
and he is being very polite. He says,
“May I ask you a question?”
This might sound a little funny, because he’s already asking a question—
but he wants to know if he can ask his other, more serious question.
Right, and Susie says,
“Sure.”
She is very happy to have him ask his question.
He says,
“How do you keep your desk so neat and organized?”
So we know that Susie’s desk is neat and organized.
If something is neat, it is not messy—
things are put away where they belong, and it looks nice.
And what about organized?
If something is organized, it means everything is put in the right place.
You can find what you want easily if something is organized.
Yeah, the way everyone organizes their things is going to be a little bit different.
Susie says this is how she does it:
Right after she uses something, she puts it away.
She doesn’t wait. Right—she won’t leave it on her desk.
For example, if she wants to use a pen,
then right after she uses it, she will put it away.
Or a stapler—she won’t just leave things lying around.
And that way, she doesn’t end up with things all over her desk.
I like that phrase we heard from Greg: end up with.
If you end up with something, then after everything happens, something is there in the end.
Right. And if you don’t stay organized,
you will end up with many things on your desk.
In fact, Susie tells us that she does this when she is at home too.
Yes. She says if she doesn’t do this,
her house gets messy very quickly.
The same is true for Greg.
Right—and this is putting things away right away—
not letting things just sit there.
Greg says,
“That’s true for me.”
So he agrees with Susie.
Susie also has a place for everything.
She’s very organized—she knows where her things belong.
And that way, things stay organized.
She’s not always looking for things.
Earlier, we heard the phrase that way.
Sonia, can you help us with this phrase?
Susie
I have a place for everything. That way, things stay organized.
I go to bed at nine o’clock.
That way, I can wake up at five o’clock.
Brett didn’t eat any snacks.
That way, he would be hungry for dinner.
Brett
The children cleaned up their room.
That way, they could go outside.
Thank you, Sonia.
Having a place for everything
That way, you have a neat and organized life.
Right, friends, now it’s time for us to take a break.
Maybe during this break, try to put something away.
We’ll see you after this.
Let’s Talk in English, Let’s Talk in English.
Every day, every day, pass the way!
Welcome back!
Earlier, Susie said something I really like.
She said:
“A place for everything.”
A place where everything goes, or where everything belongs.
So, think about your room—
where does your clothing go?
Where do you put away your sheets?
What about your hats?
There should be a place for everything, right?
Also, in your living room—
where do your cups and your dishes go?
If you’re not using them,
then try to put them back where they belong—
in the kitchen or in the cabinet.
Find a place for everything.
Friends, let’s get back to our conversation.
“I need to make a place for all my things.”
“We all do.”
Sometimes I will buy something,
and I don’t have a place to put it.
Then try this:
When you buy a new thing, get rid of an old thing.
Good idea.
And I should throw away broken things.
Yes! You don’t want useless things
taking up space in your house—
or on your desk.
It sounds like Greg does not have a place for everything.
That’s why he says:
“I need to make a place for all my things.”
Right, he needs to make a place for all his things.
When you make a place for something,
you decide where that thing goes or belongs.
Maybe it didn’t have a place before, right?
Making a place for everything
is something we need to do to keep our homes
neat and organized.
Sonia, can you help us with this phrase: make a place?
I need to make a place for all my things.
Can you make a place for the soup?
Emily made a place for the guests.
Emily
Can you make a place at the table for another person?
Thank you, Sonia.
Susie agrees with Greg, and she says,
“We all do.” We all need to make a place for everything.
This phrase “We all do” is a very useful phrase we can use.
Yes, we all do—all of us need to do that, even if we haven’t yet.
That might be why we have messy rooms in our house.
I’m sure the same is true for me.
Right! And we can also use “we all do”
when you want to say yes to something someone is saying.
For example, your friend might say,
“I need to eat more vegetables.”
Then you can say,
“We all do. That’s for sure.”
Greg continues and says,
“Sometimes I will buy something, and I don’t have a place to put it.”
This happens to me a lot with things that go in the kitchen.
I don’t have enough space to put things,
so I end up buying things and leaving them on the table.
Right, and Susie gives a tip for this.
She tells Greg to try this:
“When you buy a new thing”— so something you haven’t used before—
“get rid of an old thing.”
To get rid of something means either to throw it in the trash or give it away.
You’re not going to keep it.
Now if you do this, you won’t have more and more things—
you’ll keep about the same amount.
That sure is a good idea!
Find-It Question:
What should Greg throw away?
What should Greg throw away?
He should throw away broken things. Yes!
Broken things are things that don’t work anymore,
or they’ve broken and split apart, so you don’t need to keep them.
Yes, broken things are useless things.
You can’t use them anymore because they don’t work.
Right. You might tell yourself,
“I’m going to fix it someday.” But will you really?
Just get rid of them.
You don’t want useless things taking up space in your house.
Calendar Phrase:
We don’t want useless things. We don’t want useless things.
This clock isn’t working—get rid of it.
We don’t want useless things.
This radio isn’t working—get rid of it.
We don’t want useless things.
This coffee maker isn’t working—get rid of it.
We don’t want useless things.
Then you should start working!
Oops...
We don’t want useless things.
We don’t want useless things.
Yes, we don’t want useless things in our homes or on our desks. And now let’s go review our keywords.
Here’s your first keyword for today:
neat
She keeps her house very neat.
organized
Is your room organized?
end up with
How did you end up with the trash?
get rid of
You can get rid of those old shoes.
broken
Let’s pick up the broken glass.
Well friends, those are your keywords for today.
There are some good ones—so keep on practicing them!
And now it’s your turn.
The words for today are:
neat, organized, ended up with, get rid of, and broken.
Now it’s your turn to use them in a sentence!
First one:
Sally is an ___ person.
The answer is an adjective that starts with an “O”.
You got it—Sally is an organized person.
Next:
We shouldn’t keep these ___ dishes.
Correct—We shouldn’t keep these broken dishes.
Next:
The kitchen was ___ after I cleaned it.
Good job—The kitchen was neat after I cleaned it.
Next:
I ___ lots of leftover pizza.
You’re right—I ended up with lots of leftover pizza.
Last one:
Please don’t ___ my books. I want to keep them.
Please don’t get rid of my books.
But please do come again for Your Turn!
I need to make a place for all my things.
We all do.
Sometimes I will buy something, and I don’t have a place to put it.
Then try this: When you buy a new thing, get rid of an old thing.
Good idea.
And I should throw away broken things.
Yes, you don’t want useless things taking up space in your house.
Or on my desk.
One, two—let’s review!
Today we’re talking about keeping your desk neat and organized.
That reminds me—I’ll be right back.
No, wait! Where are you going?
I’m going to put this pencil away right now.
But we’re talking!
Well, right after I use something, I put it away.
That way, things stay organized.
Then things don’t end up all over.
Right, exactly.
Well, that’s a great tip!
Right, so I’m going to put this away.
Okay—but before you go, do you have any more tips?
Yes. Have a place for everything and put everything in its place.
Oh yeah, I should do that. But I have too many things and I keep buying more.
Try this—when you buy a new thing, get rid of an old thing.
Hmm, yeah. I should throw away anything that’s broken or useless.
Exactly. Useless things take up space.
You’re right.
Well… well? Aren’t you going to put away your pencil?
Oh right—I almost forgot!
Exactly!
Friends, today Susie shared with us some tips about how she stays neat and organized, both at work and at home.
Yeah! And these are things she does every day.
When she uses something, she puts it away right away.
Now, sometimes you might forget,
so you will have to have some longer cleaning days or afternoons.
That’s true.
If you want to stay neat and organized,
then you might need to set aside time.
You might need to make a special period of time
where you are just cleaning and putting things away.
And make sure you don’t buy too many things.
If you buy something, look and see what you don’t need.
Friends, we’ll see you again tomorrow
right here on Let’s Talk in English.
Goodbye!
