Welcome to Let’s Talk in English.
My name is Garrett.
And my name is Esther.
Today our topic is visuals.
That’s right!
Our title is "Enjoy Some Music."
Now, visuals are things that we can see.
They can be a chart, a picture, or a poster.
Today, we’re looking at a music concert poster.
Hmm, yes. A poster is really a sheet of paper that you hang up on a wall to show people something.
Posters can be fun pictures to look at, or they can be full of information.
And this poster will give us a lot of information about this music concert.
So, if you have your magazines, open your magazines and take a look at this poster picture now.
Concerts are shows where you go to hear people playing music.
Those people are usually right there in front of you, playing instruments, singing, and entertaining—or making sure everyone is having a good time.
Right. And sometimes concerts have a special name.
This concert is called a festival.
A festival is like a special celebration.
They might be celebrating the summer or something else that is special.
And a music festival is like a series of concerts.
There will be lots of different groups or bands that play.
And music festivals sometimes go over multiple, or a few different, days.
So, we’re going to learn more about this music festival and see what’s on that festival or concert poster.
All right, pull out your magazines, friends. It’s time to start.
Let’s go to Sonia for our keywords.
Sonia
There’s a music festival on the 24th.
They are Just Guitars and the Jazz Brothers.
Do you like live music?
Then they can have the festival club’s number and other information.
Look, Julie!
There’s a music festival on the 24th — that’s this Saturday!
It’s in River Park, and it begins at 4 p.m.
It only costs ten dollars. That’s a great deal!
Look at the music groups.
They’re Just Guitars and the Jazz Brothers.
I love their music!
Me too! Both are good bands.
Well Esther, do you enjoy going to see live music — music where the artists or musicians are in front of you?
I do! I do enjoy live music.
And it looks like Sam and Julie are talking about some live music at this music festival.
Yes. Sam sees this poster.
It says there’s a music festival on the 24th.
That’s the twenty-fourth of this month, right?
May 24.
And music is the sound that we hear around us.
When people are singing, they are making music.
Or, if you play an instrument like the piano or violin, you also hear music from those instruments.
Right! Music is those sounds people put together to sound nice.
Julie gives us some more information.
She says that the 24th is this Saturday, and the festival is in River Park.
That’s the place where this music festival will be held.
And they are getting this information from the poster.
The festival begins at 4 p.m. and it only costs ten dollars.
Ten dollars to get in and listen to all of the great music!
Julie thinks that’s a great deal.
If something is a "great deal," it means that you think you’re not paying too much money but you’re able to get something good.
And “That’s a great deal” is also today’s calendar phrase:
That’s a great deal. That’s a great deal.
Hey! Let’s go to the music festival!
Music festival? Yes!
Tickets are only ten dollars.
Only ten dollars? That’s a great deal!
There’s live music!
That’s a great deal!
And the bands are really good.
That’s a great deal! Let’s go!
Oh no!
Tickets are sold out.
I’m not surprised. That’s a great deal!
That’s a great deal!
That’s a great deal!
Well, Julie says that this is a great deal — ten dollars to get into the music festival. That’s usually the ticket price to get in.
But of course, at an event like this, you often need to pay more for other things, right?
It is a good deal.
Sonia, can you help us with this word: deal?
Julie
That’s a great deal!
A 說:I got these shoes for just twenty-five dollars.
That’s a great deal!
A 說:I was late to work because I lost my car keys.
You lost your car keys? That’s a big deal!
Thank you, Sonia.
And why is it a good deal?
Because you might be paying ten dollars usually just to listen to one band or one music group play.
But at a music festival, you can hear many different groups play, and you’re only paying ten dollars!
All right. And you might say "That’s a great deal" if you think something is cheap or affordable.
But you might also use that word deal to talk about special events or special prices a store puts on certain products.
Right. For example, if something usually costs two hundred dollars and now it’s only one hundred dollars,
you might say, “Wow, that’s a deal!”
Yeah, it’s a special deal the store is giving.
Well, Sam says, “Look at the music groups.”
They can see which groups or bands will be playing at the festival.
And we learn that there will be two groups playing.
The name of the first group is called Just Guitars.
Hmm, I wonder how many guitars they have.
A guitar is an instrument.
You hold it and you pull on the strings to make music.
The other group at the festival is called The Jazz Brothers.
Jazz is a special kind of music.
It’s very lively and doesn’t follow a lot of music rules.
Right. So if you’re paying ten dollars, you get to listen to two different groups play—Just Guitars and The Jazz Brothers.
Sounds like a lot of fun!
I do like hearing music outside by a park.
It can be a lot of fun.
There’s something different about live music.
It sounds better than just listening online or to a CD, right?
And I hope that Julie will be able to go to this music festival.
Sounds like they’re getting ready to go—sounds fun!
Now friends, it’s time for a quick break.
We’ll be right back just after this.
Let’s talk it anyway. Let’s talk it every day, every day. That’s the way!
Welcome back to the show, everyone!
Sometimes we go to an event because we have a friend who will be performing.
Other times, we’re walking on the street and we just see a poster.
Right. And this is what happens—they see the poster and they are interested in this music concert that will be held this Saturday.
Yeah. There are probably fun events all around where you live, friends, so keep your eyes open for fun posters!
Now, let’s get back to our conversation.
Do you like live music?
I do! I like live jazz music a lot.
Me too!
Then let’s both go to this event and invite our friends.
Yeah, let’s do it!
We can take a picture of the poster and send it to them.
Good idea! Then they can have the festival club’s number and other information.
Hey, Sam asked the same question I asked earlier—Do you like live music?
Right. Live music is music you hear where the people playing the instruments are playing in front of you.
You’re not listening from a CD or listening from the computer.
Exactly!
There are all kinds of live events.
You might see a live magic show, a live comedy or funny show, or all other kinds of live shows.
And Julie does like live music.
She likes to listen to live jazz music a lot.
Yes, she does. Live jazz music—jazz is a lot of fun.
I love listening to jazz in the evenings with a good meal.
Right. It can help you relax.
And in jazz music, there are many different kinds of instruments.
Now, earlier we heard the phrase a lot.
How is this different from the phrase a lot of?
Sonia, can you help us?
Judy
I like live jazz music a lot.
Do you shop a lot?
I am feeling a lot better this week.
Are there a lot of cookies left?
Jane has a lot of clothes on her bed.
Jane
Thank you, Sonia.
You can even say:
I listen to a lot of music,
or
I listen to jazz music a lot, right?
Those have similar meanings.
Julie goes on to say:
Let’s both go to this event and invite our friends.
Hey, are they going to invite us?
I hope so! I hope they ask us to go with them.
Yes! When you invite someone to do something with you,
you ask them if they want to join you and do that thing with you.
Right! It’s fun to go to an event like this with lots of good friends.
Sam is willing—or he does want—to do this.
And Julie says:
We can take a picture of the poster and send it to them.
Yes! They can take a picture of the poster.
A poster is a piece of paper that can have pictures or words on it.
And here, we’re looking at this music festival poster.
A lot of people enjoy having lots of posters around their room when they’re younger.
I remember having lots of posters of famous sports players that I liked.
And later I had a lot of movie posters.
Right! Well, they’re going to take a picture of this music festival poster
and send it to their friends.
So maybe Garrett and I will get this as well!
We hope so!
Well, if they send this out, then they can have the festival club’s number and other information.
They just need to make sure to take a picture.
Right, and here we’re talking about the phone number of this music festival club.
A club is a group of people who get together to do something special.
People in a club usually enjoy the same thing.
If you’re a student, there might be clubs at your school—
like a music club full of people who like music,
or a Spanish club full of people who like to learn Spanish.
Right! And if you want to keep learning English,
maybe you can find a few friends or people at work
who want to practice English with you,
and you can start your own English club.
Yeah! There are many events that are just more fun when you do them with other people,
or you can do them better.
And learning a language is definitely one of those.
Right! And clubs are a great place to meet people and make friends.
They sure are, old friends!
Club is a great word—it’s one of our keywords.
And we had a few others today.
Let’s go now and review them together.
Here is our first keyword:
Live
Are you going to the live show?
Music
When do you listen to music?
Guitar
Vicky plays the guitar well.
Jazz
Do you like that jazz band?
Club
This club is only for students.
Friends, those are today’s keywords. Keep practicing!
And now it’s your turn!
The keywords for today are:
live, music, guitar, jazz, and club.
Now it’s your turn to use them in a sentence.
___ is a beautiful style of music.
That’s right! Jazz is a beautiful style of music.
Ian plays the ___, and Pam sings.
You got it! Ian plays the guitar, and Pam sings.
We have seven boys in our ___
That is correct! We have seven boys in our book club.
He likes all kinds of ___.
Great job! He likes all kinds of music.
Mike likes restaurants with ___ music. What kind of music?
That’s the answer! Mike likes restaurants with live music.
And I like it when you join me for Your Turn!
Look, Julie! There’s a music festival on the 24th.
That’s this Saturday. It’s in River Park, and it begins at 4 p.m.
It only costs ten dollars. That’s a great deal!
Look at the music groups!
They’re Just Guitars and The Jazz Brothers.
I love their music!
Me too. Both are good bands.
Do you like live music?
I do! I like live jazz music a lot.
Me too!
Then let’s both go to this event and invite our friends!
Yeah! Let’s do it!
We can take a picture of the poster and send it to them.
Good idea!
Then they can have the festival club’s number and other information.
One, two, let’s review!
Hey David, you like music, right?
That’s right! In fact, I play the drums.
Really? Do you ever go to concerts?
Yes, sometimes. In fact, I’m going to one this weekend.
There’s a concert this weekend?
There sure is! It’s a music festival on Saturday at the park.
I saw a poster.
What else did the poster say?
There will be two bands playing live music.
Oh—live music!
Yes, jazz music.
The concert starts at four and ends at eight.
That sounds like fun!
And the cost is only ten dollars.
Only ten dollars? Hey, that’s a great deal!
I know! Do you want to come?
Sure!
Where exactly is it?
Riverside Park Square.
I’ll send you a photo of the poster.
That will be great—it will give me more information.
Hey, thanks! Maybe I’ll invite some friends.
You should! It’s good music and a good deal.
Great! See you there.
Thanks!
Hi, I’m Detective Carter. I have a problem.
I have some items and I need to find one that is different.
Can you help me find the odd one out?
There are four things.
We need to pick the one that is not the same. Are you ready?
First we have:
elementary school, high school, club, and college.
Do you know which thing is not the same?
The answer is club.
You go to elementary school, high school, and college to learn.
Club is different.
Schools and colleges have clubs for students to join.
But a club is a small group of people who enjoy the same hobby.
Schools and colleges have many students learning many things,
so club is the odd word.
Can you help me with another problem?
Club, history, guitar, and jazz.
Three words are the same.
Can you find the different word?
Club is the answer again.
History, guitar, and jazz are all things you can learn about.
You can join a club to learn about these things,
so club is not the same.
Good work! You helped me find the odd one out.
See you next time, friends!
Friends, I want to talk about something a little different from our lesson today—reading in a new language like English.
Sometimes it can be hard to read quickly or know how to pronounce each word.
And part of that is because you’re reading one word at a time, right?
So what we need to do is:
We need to listen to more English, and practice reading those words slowly, carefully, and loudly.
Do that at first, and then get better at looking ahead at the words that you haven’t read yet as you’re reading the words before.
That way you’ll know the whole sentence, and you’ll know to say live or live right—
because they are spelled the same way, but they are pronounced differently.
You can even make marks on your paper to remind you how to read them correctly.
The point is: the more you do this, the better you’ll get at it.
And we know you’re going to do a great job.
Friends, thank you so much for joining us, and we hope to see you again tomorrow.
That’s right—here on Let’s Talk in English!
Goodbye!
