we’re so glad you joined us today
my name is Ann Marie and my name is Gabe and of course
ours today is a great day to learn something new
so let’s do that together today is also
a great day to start off with a
do you like unboxing videos
what do you think Gabe
do i like unboxing videos
so that means there’s a video inside of a box
and i’m going to take the video out that is unboxing the video
that means you’re watching someone else unwrap a package oh
right right
right videos about people unboxing something that’s right
are called unboxing videos
i’ve seen a few of them
it can be fun to see what’s inside
and especially to see how the person reacts to what’s inside
yeah
that’s true
i really enjoy watching some types of unboxing videos
but what exactly are these videos and how are people doing them
that’s something
we’re going to talk about in our lesson today
let’s get right into it
unboxing when you open that package
others want to watch after you order something
it’s always fun to finally
receive the package
you want to open it right away to get at what’s inside
and you’re not the only one people gather around you
urging you to hurry up and unwrap it
they want to see what’s inside to

others want to watch can you imagine we live in a day and age
when people want to watch
other people open up their mail well
that’s where we are friends
we read after you order something
it’s always fun to finally receive the package yeah
that’s true of course
a lot of people these days order something online
momo or shoppy com
or something like that do you like ordering things online
i love ordering things especially from Amazon
all right it takes a little bit longer to get here
it can it can getting faster and faster
though man it is getting faster and faster these days
but then it’s really exciting when the package finally arrives
we use that word
finally when we’re really excited about something
that we’ve been looking forward to go
you want to open it
right away to
get at what’s inside
if you do something right away
it means that you don’t wait at all
you do it at that very moment
for example oftentimes
when my daughter gets candy
she eats it right away she doesn’t wait at all
but what does it mean to get at something
yeah that means you have a certain goal in this case
it’s an object okay
so you’re trying to get to that object or whatever is inside
but we do use the phrase to get at something
when talking about communicating in
maybe an indirect way
maybe someone is talking to you
and you’re not quite sure what they mean
and so you could say wait hold on a second
what are you getting at
that’s a good point
you could use this in a figurative way or a literal way
yeah and of course
if you ask them
what are you getting at
then hopefully
they will tell you in a more direct way what they mean but yeah
if you get a package
you want to get at it right away
you want to open the package right away
and you’re not the only one that means you’re not the only one
who is excited about what’s inside
that package according to the writer of this lesson
potentially there are hundreds or thousands
or maybe even millions of others
who would be willing to watch you on video on camera
open up that package
i guess so we do see this
you’re not the only one when someone is trying to say that
there are a lot of people who feel the same way
people gather around you as you open this package
urging you to hurry up and unwrap it
if you hurry up and do something
it means you do something
faster than you were intending to you are hurrying up
they want to see what’s inside too
and that’s true even before YouTube
and people watching other people unboxing things on video
like if you get a package at your house
and you have family members or roommates living with you
then they’re probably excited to see what’s inside as well yeah
it’s definitely true at our house
when i get a package for myself
my kids want to see inside it as well
sometimes they’re just as excited about it as i am all right
well right now we are going to go to our next reading

this experience has entered the digital age
and is known as unboxing
it’s the act of opening a product
and showing it off on social media
everyone watches while the person who received the package
removes the packaging from the moment
the boxes placed before them anticipation and excitement builds

when we say the digital age
we’re talking about this time of computers and technology
when all different kinds of videos can be watched online
that’s right and because of the internet
so this is all the digital age now
this is just following
i guess what we would call the information age
and i guess you could even say were part of the information age
still because really information is spreading around
so quickly these days
and something could happen in one part of the world
and in the next hour
or less people all the way around the world
will know about that
just because of the digital age in this information age
that’s right we have a definition of what an unboxing is here
in our next sentence
we read the act of opening a product
and showing it off on social media
all right so
we can see from this sentence
that unboxing isn’t just getting a package in the mail
and opening it up
or ordering something online and opening it up
sometimes people are going out
and buying products
and they’re still in their original packaging i see
this done a lot especially with makeup products
those are the kinds of unboxing videos i like to watch
they take the makeup out of its packaging
and then show you how the makeup looks on
so that you can experience the product even
if you haven’t bought it
yourself that’s kind of like vicarious living oh well
that’s a good phrase right
that’s kind of a big word i just thought of it of course
it doesn’t appear in your lesson friends
but if you’re living or experiencing something vicariously
that means somebody else is actually experiencing it
and because you’re watching it on video
or because they’re telling you about their experience
it feels like you’re experiencing it in some way
that’s vicarious living
and you know
sometimes we say this as a way to comfort ourselves right
maybe i don’t have a chance to travel a whole lot
so i can live vicariously through other people that’s right
that is a common way we use that phrase
this is why i watch those kind of videos
it’s because i am living vicariously
through people who are buying products that
maybe i would never buy
or i can’t afford it’s a way for me to experience them well
we read here everyone watches
while the person who received the package
removes the packaging
so they are taking the item out of the packaging of course
packaging can refer to many different kinds of wrapping
that goes on a product
could be a plastic wrapping or a cardboard wrapping
anything that is holding that item inside of it
i imagine part of the fun of watching these videos is
the sounds that is involved oh
it totally is yeah
that asmr kind of feeling you get
when you listen to certain things
like the the crinkling of plastic
i especially like it when the person who’s doing the unboxing
has their nails done really nice
and you can hear their nails clink
against the different kinds of wrapping
or even if it’s a plastic bottle or something like that well
we should talk about this other words deck sentence anticipation
okay because this is the feeling of excitement
that you get that something is going to happen
in the near future
you are anticipating it all right

i’ve been wondering about something
is there a difference between packages and parcels
or are they basically the same thing
ah that’s a great question Rex
parcels and packages are very similar
and people often use the words interchangeably
but there are some subtle differences in the ways
we tend to use the two
okay so
when i order something online
do i receive a package or a parcel
i guess you could receive either
a package is basically something wrapped
in a protective cover for shipping
it might be a wrapped gift
a cardboard box
or in bubble wrap
but people tend to
use package to describe small and medium sized items okay
so like a shoebox or a book that is nicely wrapped up
right parcel is a broader term
that could refer to a wrapped item like a package
but it could also include larger bulkier items
so if i ordered a bicycle or a big piece of furniture
i could say i receive a parcel yes
the word package is more about smaller
neatly wrapped items while parcel could describe a package
but also includes a wider range of sizes and shapes
including bigger and irregularly shaped items but again
you can use either of these terms and people will understand

and you could use this as a verb for example
to unwrap your birthday
present that means to take it out of its paper or its bag

makes it sound very exciting
right it makes it sound kind of like a magician
who might reveal something at the end of his trick right
and so that’s the idea here is that you’re showing something
and so you can imagine the anticipation building especially

i have to say you only unwrap things this slowly
when you’re making a video for thousands
or millions of other people to watch
definitely otherwise when i get something in the mail
especially
if it’s something that i’ve been waiting on for a long time
i run rapid as fast as possible
you rip that thing open definitely
and i know kids rip their packages open
as well yeah on their birthdays at Christmas right
they’re opening it as fast as possible
i know some people who who appreciate
and admire the way that a gift was wrapped
and so they’ll try to delicately
take it apart
so maybe they can save the wrapping paper
i definitely don’t do that no yeah
me neither but
what kind of unwrapper
are you friends
do you like to unwrap things as quickly as possible
or it sounds like
if you’re making a video of yourself unboxing something
then you want to be a little
more deliberate and a little slower
that’s a great point well
unboxing is a form of entertainment that connects people
if something is a form of something
it means it’s a type of something
so unboxing is a type of or a form of entertainment
you could say something else
is a form of something else
as well for example
trolling people online is a form of cyberbullying
it’s a type of cyberbullying
and this connects people not cyberbullying of course
unboxing the shared feeling of excitement brings
people together and gives them
a sense of belonging and part of that is
because you’re experiencing something vicariously
through somebody else
it taps into people’s desire for new experiences
and the simple
act of opening
a package is changed into an event worth celebrating

it’s true fish can be bought in the store right
so there are some youtubers that do fish unboxing videos
they get a fish from online
and the videos show the youtuber opening the box
and putting the fish in a new home
that new fish must feel so special
it’s getting a lot of attention and that’s today’s fun fact
it’s the end of our lesson
