Solyndra Files For $300 Million IPO

Solyndra, a Fremont based provider of cylindrical photovoltaic systems for commercial rooftops, today filed with the SEC for an initial public offering to be co-managed by Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley. According to the filing, the company is seeking to raise $300 million.

Solyndra had sales for the nine months ended October 3 of $58.8 million; in all of 2008, sales were $6 million. The company sold 17.2 MW of panels in the first nine months of the year.

Energy Conversion Devices faces these financial headwinds at the same time that privately held Solyndra is going public. Analysts view Solyndra's technology and business strategy, focused on the rooftop market, as a direct threat to Energy Conversion Devices. While Solyndra'a technology would also theoretically compete with First Solar(FSLR Quote), First Solar's focus on the large-scale ground-based solar market makes it less of a direct competitor for Solyndra.
