【Golden Words from Grand Master Sheng-Yen Lu】 His Holiness Living Buddha Sheng-Yen Lu Imparts the Teaching of 『Zen』 and How to 『Meditate』.

Buddha requests his disciples to meditate the phenomenon of life, to observe life and the laws of nature of everything, to meditate the substance and spirit, to have wisdom arised from observation, to attain enlightenment from wisdom.

By the wisdom of meditation, laws of nature, vivarta (formation), vivartasthayi/vivarta-siddha (abiding or existence), samvarta (decay or desctruction), sunya (empty, void or nonexistent), can proof the truth of Buddha, dukkha (unhappiness, suffering, distress, misery or difficulty), sunya, anitya (Impermanence), anatta/anatman (impersonal, egoless or non-self)

Meditation is to focus to subdue the mind, mind is messy, disorder and disorganised, thoughts fluctuate/oscillate, totally out of control, flow with the six indriyas (sense-organs e.g. eye, ear, nose, tongue, body and mind) and the six gunas (six external bases e.g.  sight, sound, scent, taste, tangibles, thoughts).

To train ownself mental and physical efforts, one must focus the mind on the four foundation of mindfulness repeatedly, once concentration is mastered, and able to focus at a point, it is zen/dhyana concetration (meditation).

Chinese Version:

佛陀要他的弟子,靜坐冥想這些人生的現象,明察人生及萬事萬物的自然定律,明察物質與精神,由觀察產生了智慧,由智慧得到悟境。

由冥想的智慧,自然法則，成、住、壞、空,可以證明佛陀的真理,苦、空、無常、無我。

禪定就是專注沒有經過調伏的心,心是散亂而無章的,念頭忽起忽落,完全不受控制,跟隨著六根六塵而浮動。

要訓練自己的心力,就得反覆將心念專注於四念處,只要定力純熟,專注於一,這就是禪定。
