本劇改編自T. S. Eliot1939年出版的詩集《老負鼠的實用貓經Old Possums Book of Practical Cats》。

音樂劇講述一群名為傑里科貓的貓族的故事，以及它們在某個夜晚做出“傑里科選擇”的情節：決定哪隻貓能夠升入天堂，獲得新生。

《貓》於1981年5月在倫敦西區的新倫敦劇院首演，獲得好評；

１９９８年，佩吉為［貓］音樂劇的錄影帶重新錄製此曲。這個版本保留舞台劇的歌詞，並於同年１０月登上英國單曲榜第３６名。
