I am passing by Jiangnan
the face awaiting in the seasons, like a lotus, blooms and withers

not a sign of the East wind, not a single willow catkin of March floating
your heart’s been like a tiny, lonely town
just like an evening bluestone street,
not a sound of footsteps, not a Spring curtain of March fluttering
your heart’s been a tiny window, tightly closed

The arriving clicking of my horse is a mistake of beauty
I’m no home comer, just a passer-by…..

這首堪稱抒情詩代表作的作品，根本不是情詩，而是殘酷的戰爭詩。

〔詩人鄭愁予：當我寫這首詩的時候不是在台灣寫的，包括我童年時候戰亂的整個背景。〕

　　只能說這首戰詩寫得太美，才會導致這美麗的錯誤。
