Unit 7 “Accessories of Life”

1.     A credit card is a very popular way of paying for things in the west. The money comes out of your account at the end of the month.

2.     A gadget [ ] (小機件;(小巧的)器具;小玩意兒) is a small machine or device which does something useful. You sometimes refer to something as a gadget when you are suggesting that it is complicated and unnecessary.

3.     A hairdresser (美髮師) is a person who cuts, colours, and arranges people's hair.

4.     Accessories (配件) are items of equipment that are not usually essential, but which can be used with or added to something else in order to make it more efficient, useful, or decorative.

5.     An answering machine is a device which you connect to your telephone and which records telephone calls while you are out.

6.     Cash can mean money in general

7.      clip: attach; fasten; fix

8.      compact camera (傻瓜相機; 輕便型相機)

9.      do without: it wasn’t necessary to have

10.    ignore: take no notice of; neglect

11.  print (照片): photo

12.  Stereo (立體音響裝置) is used to describe a sound system or record in which the sound is played through two speakers. Compare mono.

13.    Tenpin bowling (保齡球) (or bowling, or tenpins) is an indoor game in which players roll heavy balls along a track and try to knock down a group of pins.

14.    to be taken aback: to be surprised

15.    understand: follow, get, perceive
