The Fetishistic

“Handkerchief Spotted with Strawberries”

In Othello

In this study, I propose to explore Freudian notions of fetishism as they are especially exemplified in William Shakespeare’s play, Othello, which describes a tragic story about the jealous husband Othello who murders his wife Desdemona by mistaking her as an unfaithful spouse. The important “ocular proof” that Othello demands from his ensign Iago to testify to Desdemona’s adultery in the play is the handkerchief, which has been passed down to Othello from his mother, and, then, passed on to Desdemona from Othello as a love token for their marriage. In many senses, Shakespeare seems to make the handkerchief a semi-supernatural force in relation to conjugal infidelity. First, I will detail the Freudian theories regarding fetishism in his four famous articles. Then, to rescue Freudian phallicising of fetishism, I will explore the Kleinian theories to explain the female fetishism. Lastly, I will focus on the fetishistic handkerchief whose symbolism manifests a psychological transformation through the two major characters of Othello and Desdemona and their pre-Oedipal phase.

草莓玷污的手帕：《奧塞羅》的戀物解讀

本論文將以佛洛依德戀物癖的理論來分析莎士比亞的戲劇《奧塞羅》。在莎氏的劇本中，奧塞羅是一位忌妒的先生，因為受到伊牙戈讒言誤導，以為自己守身如玉的妻子戴絲夢那與人有染，而殺妻，而後發現實情，以死謝罪。《奧塞羅》一劇中可證明戴絲夢那不貞的重要證據，就是那繡有草莓的手帕，而這手帕原為奧塞羅母親所擁有的稀有珍品，她將之贈與愛子奧塞羅，而後奧塞羅送予戴絲夢那，當作定情之物。本論將試圖先探究佛洛依德戀物癖理論的發展，並加上克萊恩門人對於戀物癖的女性論點，以補佛氏論點之不足；而後援引該精神分析之戀物理論，來說明這被草莓玷污的手帕所代表的涵義，及其與奧塞羅與戴絲夢那兩人的漸行漸遠的婚姻悲劇的關係。
