Chinese Blackbirds living near humans can mimic electric moped alarms, with about 50% of studied males imitating these sounds, though their mimicked versions differ in frequency and structure from the originals. Researchers found this human-sound mimicry to be more common than expected and suggest further studies on its relation to urbanization and song development in birds. Chinese Blackbirds can mimic electric moped alarms, though their imitations are simplified. A new study shows this mimicry is more common than expected and may involve copying both the source and other birds, prompting further research into urban sound influence on birdsong. Many songbirds are capable of mimicking a wide range of sounds, including those made by other bird species, amphibians, and even insects, particularly during the breeding season. This vocal mimicry is thought to play a role in courtship displays. In captivity, birds such as parrots are well known for imitating human-made sounds, including human speech. However, according to Changjian Fu, an ornithologist and PhD candidate at the Lab of Animal Behavior and Conservation at Nanjing University in China, reports of wild birds mimicking human-made sounds remain anecdotal. To date, no scientific study has conducted a systematic or quantitative investigation of this phenomenon. To that end, Fu and his colleagues described in a study published in the KeAi journal Avian Research how human-made sounds and those imitated by birds differ through quantitative investigations. “We started by looking for a mimic living next to human communities. Under this scenario, urban birds provide us with an ideal object,” shares Fu. “We noticed that some Chinese Blackbirds (Turdus mandarinus) living in our campus can produce some sounds like alarms of electric mopeds incorporated in their songs sometimes. This is interesting because this kind of alarm is challenging sounds to produce.” Investigating the Mimicry of Electric Mopeds Consequently, the researchers decided to quantitatively investigate the electric moped sound mimicry in Chinese Blackbirds to understand the acoustic differences between the mimicry and sounds of real electric mopeds. “We knew that male Chinese Blackbirds produce very large song repertoires, including various song types, mimicry, and their species-specific songs,” says Fu. “Nonetheless, It was a very challenging endeavor because Chinese Blackbirds can imitate a lot of sounds from other birds, and their species-specific songs are also various.” Example spectrograms showing the electric moped sounds and the imitations produced by Chinese Blackbirds. Credit: Fu Changjian During the study, which involves six months of field work and recording of over 40 electric moped sounds and 26 male Chinese Blackbirds’ song repertoires – including a total of 3,041 songs – the team discovered that the males (50%) could imitate the alarms of electric mopeds, and 84 songs contained the mimetic alarms (2.8%). Simplified Imitation “Mimicking human-made sounds in Chinese Blackbirds is more common than we think. However, we found obvious differences between these imitations and the real sounds,” adds Fu. The team also discovered that, although the mimicry sounded vivid, quantitative analysis revealed obvious differences between the two sounds. Mimetic alarms possessed lower frequencies and fewer notes than the real alarms. “As human-made sounds are difficult to produce, Chinese Blackbirds copy a simplified version of these sounds,” explains Fu. “We also found that the mimetic sounds from different sites also differed in acoustic structures. Chinese Blackbirds seem to imitate the sounds not only from electric mopeds directly, but also from other conspecific neighbors, which is known as ‘secondary mimicry.’” Human-sound mimicry in songbirds may be universal, and its development is a complex process. The authors note that further studies should include how many human-made sounds are imitated, the mimicry accuracy, and the correlation between urbanization progress and the proportion of human-made sounds in mimetic repertoires of songbirds. The Cinereous Vulture (Aegypius monachus), also referred to as the Black Vulture, Monk Vulture, or Eurasian Black Vulture, is the biggest bird of prey in Europe. The Cinereous Vulture, which is globally classified as Near Threatened, has seen a substantial drop in its populations in southern Europe since the late 1800s. This decline has been so severe that by the mid-1900s, the bird was already absent across most of its distribution range in Europe. In Bulgaria, the species has been considered extinct at a local level since 1985. Thanks to the re-introduction initiative that was started in 2015 by three Bulgarian non-governmental organizations: the leading and oldest environmental protection NGO in Bulgaria: Green Balkans, the Fund for Wild Flora and Fauna, and the Birds of Prey Protection Society, the species is now back in the country. The project, aptly named “Vultures Back to LIFE“, where the Vulture Conservation Foundation (Switzerland), EuroNatur (Germany), and Junta de Extremadura (Spain) are also partners, has been co-financed by the LIFE+ financial instrument of the European Commission. By mid-2022, the team imported a total of 72 individuals from Spain and European zoos, before releasing them in strategically-chosen sites in the Eastern Balkan Mountains and the Vrachanski Balkan Nature Park in Northwestern Bulgaria. Methods for Re-introduction and Lessons Learned The team brought 63 immatures from Spain, where the birds had been found in distress and rehabilitated in aviaries. The other nine juveniles were captive-bred in zoos, and then released by means of hacking, which involves an artificial nest, from where the fledglings can gradually ‘’take off” to a life in the wild. There, the scientists led by Ivelin Ivanov (Green Balkans), report on and discuss the effectiveness and challenges of the different release methods and offer tips on the conservation and re-introduction. For example, hacking proved to be inefficient in establishing an entirely new core (or nucleus) population of Cinereous Vultures in the Balkan Mountains in Bulgaria. It did not work for supplementing a small settled group of individuals either. Instead, the team recommends the aviary method and delayed release, where captive-bred birds are introduced to the new locality after a period of acclimatization, where the birds can gain life experience to the local environment. “The Cinereous Vulture re-introduction establishment phase in Bulgaria in the two first release sites is running according to the plan, and the first results are satisfactory,” the authors of the article comment. “Two distinct nuclei are now created, and the species started breeding, which might be a reason to up-list it in the Red Data Book of Bulgaria from ’Extinct’ to ‘Critically Endangered.’” These two newly created breeding nuclei of the Cinereous Vulture in Bulgaria are the second and third of their kind in the Balkan Peninsula. A Regional Revival for the Cinereous Vulture “Following a dramatic decline throughout the 20th century for decades, the species had remained in only one breeding colony in Dadia-Lefkimi-Soufli Forest National Park in north-eastern Greece. Now, exchange between the three colonies will facilitate the exchange of individuals, ensure long-term stability, and give rise to the regional population,” the authors say. However, the team points out that further monitoring and modeling and adaptive management are indispensable for the long-term persistence of the new national population. Now that there is already evidence that the imported vultures have been successfully breeding in Bulgaria, there is one step left before it can be officially confirmed that the Cinereous Vulture species has successfully re-established in the country. This conclusion can only be made after the core breeding populations begin to produce about ten chicks every year and after the locally fledged individuals begin to reproduce on their own. Such results are expected by 2030. Other Conservation Success Stories in Bulgaria The re-introduction of the Cinereous Vulture is the latest in a series of conservation projects focused on birds of prey in Bulgaria. First, in a program that started in 2009, the Griffon Vulture was successfully re-introduced in Bulgaria after about 50 years of “extinction”. In fact, the team took a lot of the know-how and methods used in that project to apply in the present project. The success story was published in a research paper in the Biodiversity Data Journal in 2021. In fact, the very same day in 2021 saw two publications in the Biodiversity Data Journal that reported on re-introduction successes involving birds of prey in Bulgaria, which had gone missing for decades. The second instance was the discovery of the first nesting Saker Falcons in twenty years. Both scientific publications are part of a dynamic ‘living’ collection, titled “Restoration of species of conservation importance”, whose aim is to collate publicly available research studies reporting on the reintroduction and/or restocking of animal and plant species of conservation importance around the world. The collection was inspired by the “International Scientific Conference on Restoration of Conservation-Reliant Species and Habitats” held in Sofia, Bulgaria, in 2020. “The restoration of species is one of the most important conservation tools in the context of constantly intensified human-driven global biodiversity loss. The reintroduction/restocking activities are related to significant research and data gathering before and during the work process, which ensures their sustainable success,” explain the collection editors. DOI: 10.3897/BDJ.11.e100521 Jet lag is a temporary sleep disorder that occurs after long-distance travel across multiple time zones. The condition is caused by a mismatch between the traveler’s internal body clock and the new external time environment, resulting in symptoms such as fatigue, insomnia, and decreased alertness. A recent study investigated the impact of disrupting the circadian rhythm on adult neurogenesis. Researchers at the University of Massachusetts Amherst have zeroed in on the primary cause of negative health consequences stemming from disruptions to the body’s circadian rhythms, commonly experienced during jet lag or shift work. The study, published recently in the journal eNeuro, reveals that the circadian clock gene Cryptochrome 1 (Cry 1) plays a crucial role in regulating adult neurogenesis — the continuous creation of neurons in the hippocampus region of the brain. Adult neurogenesis is vital for learning and memory, and disturbances in this process have been associated with dementia and mental health disorders. “Circadian disruption impacts a lot of things,” says lead author Michael Seifu Bahiru, a Ph.D. candidate in the lab of Eric Bittman, Professor Emeritus of Biology. “There are links to cancer, diabetes, and hypertension, as well as adverse impacts on neurogenesis.” Cell birth and survival in the adult hippocampus are regulated by a circadian clock, so its disruption may throw off the process of neurogenesis. In the U.S. alone, some 30 million people experience phase shifts in their circadian rhythms as they work rotating schedules. Credit: UMass Amherst Jet Lag vs. Light Cycle Shifts Until recently, the researchers have faced a sort of chicken-or-egg question. “We always wondered what actually is the root cause of the ailments from circadian disruption?” Bahiru says. “Does the problem come from the act of shifting or the shift itself?” Bittman explains further, “It’s possible it’s just changing the light cycle that affects neurogenesis, that jerking your clock around is bad for you, as opposed to the jet lag, which is the time delay that it takes for all circadian-dependent systems in your body to adjust to this change in daylight.” Their findings support the hypothesis that it’s this internal misalignment, this state of desynchrony between and within organs that occurs during jet lag, that is responsible for the adverse impact on neurogenesis – and, they suspect, other adverse health effects from circadian disruption. To test their hypothesis, they studied cell birth and differentiation in Syrian hamsters with a recessive mutation in the Cry 1 gene that speeds up the clock in constant conditions and dramatically accelerates its ability to shift in response to light. Bittman named the mutation, discovered in previous research, duper. The research team also tested a control group of hamsters without the duper mutation. Both underwent the same sequence of changes in the light cycle. Circadian Misalignment and Neurogenesis They simulated jet lag in the form of eight-hour advances and delays at eight 16-day intervals. A cell birth marker was given in the middle of the experiment. Results showed that jet lag has little effect on cell birth but steers the fate of newborn cells away from becoming neurons. Dupers are immune to this effect of phase shifts. “As predicted, the duper animals re-entrained quicker, but also were resistant to the negative effects of the jet lag protocol, whereas the control – the wild type hamsters – had reduced neurogenesis,” Bahiju says. “The findings indicate that circadian misalignment is critical in jet lag,” the paper concludes. The ultimate goal of Bittman’s lab is to advance understanding of the pathways involved in human biological clocks, which could lead to the prevention of or treatment for the effects of jet lag, shift work, and circadian rhythm disorders. This latest research is the next step toward that goal. Now the team will turn to “a big unanswered question,” Bittman says – “whether it’s the operation of circadian clocks in the hippocampus that is being directly regulated by shifts of the light-dark cycle, or whether neurogenesis is controlled by biological clocks running in cells elsewhere in the body.” Another possibility, which Bittman thinks is more likely, is that the master pacemaker in the suprachiasmatic nucleus of the hypothalamus in the brain detects the light shift and then relays it to the stem cell population that has to divide and differentiate in the hippocampus.
