Credit: Jeremy Howell New research finds that the massive Joro spiders are gentle giants and mean people no harm. Contrary to their daunting looks, the massive yellow and blue-black spiders that are increasingly populating the Southeastern U.S. attribute their survival to an unexpected trait: They’re rather timid. In fact, a recent study from the University of Georgia reveals that the Jorō (Joro) spider could possibly be the most shy spider ever recorded. “One of the ways that people think this spider could be affecting other species is that it’s aggressive and out-competing all the other native spiders,” said Andy Davis, lead author of the study and a research scientist in UGA’s Odum School of Ecology. “So we wanted to get to know the personality of these spiders and see if they’re capable of being that aggressive. “It turns out they’re not.” The researchers compared more than 450 spiders’ responses to a brief and harmless disturbance across 10 different species. While most spiders froze for less than a minute before resuming their normal activities, the Joro spiders remained motionless for more than an hour. While most spiders begin moving again shortly after being disturbed, Joro spiders like the one here remain immobile for more than an hour. Credit: Peter Frey/UGA “They basically shut down and wait for the disturbance to go away,” Davis said. “Our paper shows that these spiders are really more afraid of you than the reverse.” In fact, Joros are relatively harmless to people and pets. Joros won’t bite unless cornered. And even if you did manage to somehow annoy a Joro into biting you, its fangs likely wouldn’t be large enough to pierce your skin. Most Spiders Begin Moving Quickly After Stress, Joros Remain Immobile for 60+ Minutes To examine the spiders’ reaction to stress, the researchers used a turkey baster to gently blow two rapid puffs of air onto individual spiders. This minor disturbance causes the spiders to “freeze” for a period of time, going absolutely still. The researchers tested more than 30 garden spiders, banded garden spiders, and marbled orb weavers. They also analyzed similar data from previously published, peer-reviewed papers that assessed the response of 389 more spiders, comprising five additional species. All of those spiders began moving again after an average of about a minute and a half of stillness. The Joros, however, stayed frozen with no body or leg movement for over an hour in most cases. The only other spider species that exhibited a similarly extended response was the Joro spider’s cousin, the golden silk spider. Known as Trichonephila clavipes, the golden silk spider and the Joro spider are from the same genus. Joros May Be Invasive, but They’re Not Aggressive Officially known as Trichonephila clavata, the East Asian Joro spider first arrived in Georgia around 2013. The species is native to Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and China, and likely hitched a ride stateside on a shipping container. The species has since rapidly spread across the state and much of the Southeast. Joro spiders easily number in the millions now. And there’s not much we can do to stop them from increasing their range. Davis’ previous research even suggested that the invasive arachnids could spread beyond their current habitats and through most of the Eastern Seaboard. “Most people think ‘invasive’ and ‘aggressive’ are synonymous,” said Amitesh Anerao, co-author of the study and an undergraduate researcher at the university. “People were freaking out about the Joro spiders at first, but maybe this paper can help calm people down.” Joro Spiders Built To Withstand Human Activity Joros are regularly spotted in areas native Georgia spiders don’t typically inhabit. They build their golden webs between powerlines, on top of stoplights, and even above the pumps at local gas stations—none of which are particularly peaceful spots. The researchers believe the Joro spiders’ shyness may help them better endure the barrage of noise, vibrations, and visual stimuli they consistently encounter in urban settings. Their prolonged freeze response to being startled could help conserve the Joro spiders’ energy. If you’re wondering how something so mild-mannered could spread the way Joro spiders have, you aren’t the only one. “One thing this paper tells me is that the Joros’ rapid spread must be because of their incredible reproductive potential,” Davis said. “They’re simply outbreeding everybody else. It’s not because they’re displacing native spiders or kicking them out of their own webs.” Arachnophobes can take solace in the Joro spiders’ meek and gentle temperament. A new survey shows that there are 20 different species of sea lettuce along the Swedish coast. Credit: Sophie Steinhagen A DNA-based survey in the Baltic Sea has identified 20 sea lettuce species, including invasive and previously unknown varieties. The diversity of the sea lettuce species, a type of green algae, present in the Baltic Sea region and Skagerak, is significantly more extensive than previously believed. A comprehensive study conducted by researchers from the University of Gothenburg, surveying over 10,000 kilometers of coastal area, has identified a total of twenty distinct sea lettuce species. Belonging to the genus Ulva, sea lettuce is a prominent species of green macroalgae, scattered widely across the vast Baltic Sea region, stretching from the Atlantic waters to the Bay of Bothnia in the Baltic Sea. Owing to its rapid growth and easy reproduction, sea lettuce has piqued the interest of the growing aquaculture industry. Research is ongoing both in Sweden and abroad for utilizing sea lettuce in the food industry and for different biochemical applications. There are multiple species, but until now it has not been known how many there are and previously only a handful had been identified. Invasive Species Identified “We have studied the biological diversity of the Baltic Sea, Kattegatt, and Skagerak by taking a large number of samples from sea lettuce that we have then conducted DNA analysis of. We found 20 unique species and subspecies. Three of these are invasive species that have found their way here in various ways,” says Sophie Steinhagen, a researcher at Tjärnö Marine Laboratory. The researchers also found completely new species of sea lettuce in Swedish waters that have not previously been described scientifically. Some of these appear to only grow in the Baltic Sea. Growing sea lettuce as a food source is a rapidly increasing industry, and foreign species risk being spread through simple ignorance. To maintain and protect valuable ecosystems along the coasts, it is important to know which species grow there and to not introduce new species that risk out-competing the native species. Grow the Right Species in the Right Place “Our study shows that today’s method of identifying species, which is often done by looking at the appearance of green algae, is insufficient for identifying the distribution of the various species. We have not been able to see the real extent of the biological diversity,” says Steinhagen. The inventory discovered many new species, information that can be valuable when cultivation of sea lettuces is initiated in new places along the coast. It is important to grow the right species at the right place to avoid the risk of impacting diversity. “This new knowledge allows us to develop methods for maintaining the unique sea lettuce species along a specific coast. Our survey can also help when writing regulations related to invasive species that should not be used in aquaculture if it is to be sustainable,” says Steinhagen. Facts About Sea Lettuce Sea lettuce consists of many species of the green algae Ulva. In Sweden, sea lettuce grows on cliffs and rocks at the edge of water along the entire West Coast and in the Baltic Sea up to the Bay of Bothnia. Sea lettuce is very nutritional with relatively high protein content, healthy polyunsaturated fatty acids, and dietary fibers. It also has valuable biochemical molecules. A new study has provided the most detailed view yet of the surface chemistry of certain worm species, offering groundbreaking insights into how these organisms interact with their environment and each other. These findings could significantly enhance our understanding of evolutionary adaptations, refine behavioral research, and contribute to new strategies for combating parasitic infections. Researchers from the University’s School of Pharmacy utilized advanced mass spectrometry imaging to analyze the nematodes Caenorhabditis elegans and Pristionchus pacificus. Their goal was to characterize the species-specific chemical composition of the worms’ surfaces and its role in physiology and behavior. The study revealed that nematode surfaces are primarily composed of oily, lipid-based substances, creating a complex chemical landscape. The findings have been published in JACS. Nematodes, or worms, are found in nearly every environment on Earth, including inside animals, soil, plants, seeds, water, and even humans. Infections caused by nematodes can lead to serious health conditions in severe cases. Contact dependent predation. Credit: University of Nottingham This research was led by Dr. Veeren Chauhan, an Assistant Professor in Whole Organism Analytics at the School of Pharmacy, he explained: “Nematodes are an excellent model for human biology and are considered to be some of the most completely understood animals on the planet – especially in terms of genetics, neurology, and developmental biology. We share around 60-70% of our DNA with these worms so any new discoveries about them can significantly enhance our understanding of human biology and can contribute towards solving global human health challenges. Using world-leading mass spectrometry facilities, we studied the surface chemical properties of nematodes throughout their development. This allowed us to track molecular changes in detail and observe how surface chemistry differs during development, varies between species, and, importantly, influences their interactions with one another.” Advanced Technology Unveils New Insights The team used the state-of-the-art 3D-OrbiSIMS instrument at the University of Nottingham to reveal that the surface chemistry of both worm species change over time and they are made up of predominantly lipids, which account for approximately 70-80% of the molecular composition. The University of Nottingham was one of the first institutions in the world to obtain a 3D-OrbiSIMS instrument. This instrument enables an unprecedented level of mass spectral molecular analysis across a range of materials, including hard and soft matter as well as biological cells and tissues. When the surface sensitivity, high mass resolution, and spatial resolution, are combined with a depth profiling sputtering beam, the instrument becomes an extremely powerful tool for chemical analysis as demonstrated in this recent work. 3D-OrbiSIMS Schematic. Credit: University of Nottingham Dr. Chauhan continues: “Discovering that these worms have predominantly oily, or lipid-based, surface is a significant step in understanding their biology. These lipid surfaces help maintain hydration and provide a barrier against bacteria, which are essential for their survival. What is also very interesting is that these lipids also appear to serve as chemical cues that influence interspecies interactions, such as predation. For example, the predatory behavior of Pristionchus pacificus is guided by physical contact with the surface lipids of its prey, Caenorhabditis elegans, and alterations in these lipids can increase the susceptibility of the prey to predation.” Gaining this level of understanding of the surface chemistries of these worms and how they influence interaction and survival opens up new areas of scientific discovery and could ultimately help in developing strategies to fight parasitic worms and the diseases that they cause.” Reference: “Surface Lipids in Nematodes are Influenced by Development and Species-specific Adaptations” by Anna M.
