A UK-led study reveals that Amazon forest islands were connected by woodlands during the last Ice Age, allowing animal movement but restricting specialized species. The research warns of the Amazon’s vulnerability to rapid climate change and uses advanced modeling to explore its rich biodiversity. Advanced modeling offers fresh insights into the diverse range of species found in rainforests. The Amazon rainforest hosts an exceptional array of unique plants and animals, with certain species exclusive to specific regions. The cause of this unique biodiversity has puzzled and divided scientists for many years. Now a new international study, led by the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (UKCEH), challenges traditional thinking about how the Amazon evolved during the last Ice Age, which spanned the period between around 2.6 million and 11,700 years ago. It demonstrates the world’s largest tropical rainforest is more sensitive to environmental change than we previously thought, providing a further warning about how the ongoing, large-scale, rapid human-driven climate and land use change presents a threat to this precious ecosystem. Theories of Amazonian Evolution Some scientists have argued that, during the last Ice Age, the Amazon had ‘forest islands’ (referred to as ‘refugia’) that were completely isolated, while others have suggested the forest was continuous, covering roughly the same area as today. The findings of the UKCEH-led modeling study, published in the journal npj Biodiversity, indicate the answer is somewhere in-between: woodlands and savannas connected these forest islands. The authors conclude this allowed some animals, which could travel further and were more adaptable, to move between them, while acting as a barrier to more specialist species that rely on a certain type of habitat. The make-up of an area’s vegetation and climate influences natural evolution, meaning that while a species may originally have been present across a large area, different species gradually evolved in different areas as animals’ local environment changed. Study lead author Dr Douglas Kelley, a Land Surface Modeller at UKCEH, explains: “Climate changes in the past played a huge role in shaping how the Amazon forest looked and where it grew. Similar changes are coming very soon and much faster. “Previously, fluctuations in climate took thousands of years to happen, enabling plants and animals to adapt, but now significant global warming is happening within decades due to increasing human-driven greenhouse gas emissions.” Advanced Research Techniques The study involved UKCEH, the Ontario Forest Research Institute, Kiel University in Germany, the Met Office in the UK, INPA in Brazil, and the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago. The team used a combination of advanced climate and vegetation modeling techniques with computer-based predictions of the type of plants that grew during the last Ice Age and their location, based on records of fossilized pollen from sediment. Previous research has largely used single research techniques. The researchers say, unlike previous studies, they considered the gaps that would have existed between the areas where fossilized pollen has been found and whether animals would have been able to move between habitats. Their advanced computer and statistical modeling indicated what type of vegetation would have grown there, verified by the type of plants recorded in any adjoining areas. Climate Impacts on Amazon Forest Cover Forest cover was dramatically reduced during the last Ice Age due to the colder, drier climate. There was less carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and the dry conditions restricted tree growth and caused more wildfires that destroyed many forested areas. Research co-author Dr. Hiromitsu Sato of the Ontario Forest Research Institute, says: “We believe our study, involving integrated modeling methods, provides the best evidence to date on the origins of the rich biodiversity in the Amazon. “Using land surface modeling to provide crucial information on biodiversity is a new and very exciting innovation that could be used in the future to investigate the history of species where there is a shortage of data.” The researchers’ next step is to explore when and where species within groups like monkeys, antbirds, frogs, butterflies, and lianas might have diverged from one another over thousands of years. DOI: 10.1038/s44185-024-00056-4 A new study reveals that lampreys, an ancient and ecologically significant species, genetically diverged into Northern and Southern Hemisphere groups around 93 million years ago, during the Cretaceous period. Researchers suggest that extreme global temperatures at the time, particularly in tropical regions, likely drove this separation. Cretaceous-era global heat likely caused a genetic split between Northern and Southern Hemisphere lampreys, offering new insight into species adaptation to climate change. A new study finds that one of the hottest periods in Earth’s history may have driven lampreys apart – genetically speaking. This research could offer insights into how aquatic species might respond to today’s changing climate. “Lampreys are simultaneously creepy and special – even though people tend to think of them as just tubes with a freaky circle of teeth,” says Lily Hughes, corresponding author of the study. Hughes is a research assistant professor at North Carolina State University and the curator of ichthyology at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences. “They are an ancient and amazing species, and their larvae play an important role in filtering nutrients and maintaining water quality in stream beds,” Hughes says. “But very little is known about their evolutionary relationships, or tree of life.” Lamprey Diversity and Global Distribution There are only 48 currently recognized species of lampreys, and they are divided into three families: one that lives in the Northern Hemisphere, and two in the Southern Hemisphere. No lamprey species are found in the tropics near the equator. Hughes, study co-first author Devin Bloom, and the research team set out to determine when these groups diverged from their common ancestor. Bloom is an associate professor at Western Michigan University. Using a combination of DNA samples from living lampreys and information from the fossil record, the team constructed phylogenomic trees that revealed a split between the Northern and Southern Hemisphere lampreys around 93 million years ago, during the Cretaceous period. “We do know that during this time period, average temperatures globally were about 82 F (28.1 C), and the average tropical temperature was 93.5 F (34.2 C),” Hughes says. “Lamprey larvae like to be cooler, which is why they burrow into stream beds. The tropical temperatures at this point were much hotter than larval lampreys can survive. “A couple of things could have happened as a result of these temperatures to explain the split: maybe tropical lampreys went extinct and the groups lost a common genetic link that way, or maybe the lampreys just moved away from the equator to more temperate climes. While we don’t know how the lampreys were distributed at the time, we do know that this is when they split.” A New Hypothesis for Lamprey Evolution The findings represent a new hypothesis for lamprey distribution. “One appealing explanation for the highly disjunct distribution of lampreys was the existence of the ancient supercontinent Pangea, which could have physically separated the groups,” Bloom says. “But our study, which combines fossil and genomic information, shows the divergence between Northern and Southern Hemisphere lampreys happened long after the breakup of Pangea.” Reference: “Phylogenomic resolution of lampreys reveals the recent evolution of an ancient vertebrate lineage” by Lily C. Amyloid protein made in the liver can cause neurodegeneration in the brain, according to a new study in the open-access journal PLOS Biology, by John Mamo of Curtin University in Bentley, Australia, and colleagues. Since the protein is thought to be a key contributor to development of Alzheimer’s disease (AD), the results suggest that the liver may play an important role in the onset or progression of the disease. Deposits of amyloid-beta (A-beta) in the brain are one of the pathological hallmarks of AD and are implicated in neurodegeneration in both human patients and animal models of the disease. But A-beta is also present in peripheral organs, and blood levels of A-beta correlate with cerebral amyloid burden and cognitive decline, raising the possibility that peripherally produced a-beta may contribute to the disease. Testing that hypothesis has been difficult, since the brain also produces A-beta, and distinguishing protein from the two sources is challenging. In the current study, the authors surmounted that challenge by developing a mouse that produces human a-beta only in liver cells. They showed that the protein was carried in the blood by triglyceride-rich lipoproteins, just as it is in humans, and passed from the periphery into the brain. They found that mice developed neurodegeneration and brain atrophy, which was accompanied by neurovascular inflammation and dysfunction of cerebral capillaries, both commonly observed with Alzheimer’s disease. Affected mice performed poorly on a learning test that depends on function of the hippocampus, the brain structure that is essential for the formation of new memories. The findings from this study indicate that peripherally derived A-beta has the ability to cause neurodegeneration and suggest that A-beta made in the liver is a potential contributor to human disease. If that contribution is significant, the findings may have major implications for understanding Alzheimer’s disease. To date, most models of the disease have focused on brain overproduction of A-beta, which mimics the rare genetic cases of human Alzheimer’s. But for the vast majority of AD cases, overproduction of A-beta in the brain is not thought to be central to the disease etiology. Instead, lifestyle factors may play a more important role, including a high-fat diet, which might accelerate liver production of A-beta. The effects of peripheral A-beta on brain capillaries may be critical in the disease process, Mamo adds. “While further studies are now needed, this finding shows the abundance of these toxic protein deposits in the blood could potentially be addressed through a person’s diet and some drugs that could specifically target lipoprotein amyloid, therefore reducing their risk or slowing the progression of Alzheimer’s disease.” Reference: “Synthesis of human amyloid restricted to liver results in an Alzheimer disease–like neurodegenerative phenotype” by Virginie Lam, Ryusuke Takechi, Mark J.
