Book Report-The Outsiders
By S.E.Hinton
The main character in this book is Ponyboy. He
is a sensitive boy. In this story, he continues growing from many events,
including the fight with Soc, the fire of the church, the death of Johnny and
Dally, and his project etc. He learns things from those by good-observes to
people around him. He thinks carefully about everything happening and gets new
mature thought after that. In the last of this book, he wrote the things he observes
in his project which is the story and the growing of himself.
Among the minor characters I like
is Pony boy’s English teacher. He’s not a obvious man in this story. However,
Ponyboy has mentioned him as a good guy. I think so, too. Ponyboy says he
always makes students think. That’s good to them because it lets students not
just cram knowledge but have ability to invent something or have some new
ideas. Besides, Ponyboy mentions that he treats students as really a person. It
means he respects each students. Though Ponyboy’s grades fails, he gives him a
chance. He seems very tolerant.
The title of this book is “The
Outsiders.”It’s written by S.E.Hinton. The name is the author’s pen name.
This book tells about Ponyboy and
his friends who are called the greasers. They usually have conflict with a
gang, “Soc.”One day, in a fight with the Soc, one of Ponyboy’s friend, Johnny,
kills one of the Soc. So he and Johnny flee to a remote place for Dally’s
suggestion. One day, when they are on the way back to the secret place, the
come across a church which is burning, and there are some kids still in it. So
they go to save those kids. After they save the kids, a bad thing happens. Johnny
is hit by a burnng falling wood, and Dally also gets hurt in taking Johnny
outside the church. Later in the hospital, Johnny dies. Not long after that, Dally
dies by being shot by police for robbing a store in the vacuum of losing
Johnny. Ponyboy writes these things into his project in later time.
The most interesting part I think
is the the death of Johnny. It causes Pony to meditate many things and let him
be more mature. It makes this story sorrowful as well. It gives the story a
critical point, and a relationship between the beginning and the end of this
book. In fact, I like good tragedy. The sacrifice for saving people is one of
the examples.
All at all, it tells about
friendship, gangs, and a brave action. The greasers often fight. However, they
still know justice and love. They are not a gang. The scene of saving kids
gives it a meaning of a record of a heroic accomplishment.
I recommend people to read this
book. Except for the oral sentences, informal usage of words, and bad behavior,
it is really good. It tells the bright side of people. It shows that even the
greasers have cute characteristics. It may make people think more about the
disobedience of the youth.
