Not My Fault

There once was a small boy who always had an excuse whenever he did something wrong. Nothing was ever his fault, and he never took the blame for anything that he did wrong.

If he spilt some milk, his mother would scold him for being careless. But, he would reply, “ It wasn’t my fault. Didn’t you see it? The milk just jumped out of my glass.”

If he bumped into a pole as he was walking along the street, his mother would say, “Look where you are going!” He would say, “It wasn’t my fault, Mommy, the pole moved right in front of me.”

If he got up too late in the morning, his mother would say, “You’re late!” He would say, “ It wasn’t my fault, Mom. The sun came up late this morning.”

Sometimes his excuses were not funny at all because what he did wrong was not so important. Sometimes, however, they were not funny at all because what he did was bad.

One day, his mother heard a loud crashing sound. She ran to find out what the problem was and found her best vase lying in tiny pieces at the bottom of the stairs. When she looked up, she saw her son standing at the top of the stairs.

“Did you push my vase down the stairs?” She shouted at him.

“It wasn’t my fault, “ the boy said. “It was the vase’s fault. I only pushed it down one step. It fell the rest of the way by itself.
