醫學英文與一般英文一樣，有字首與字尾，由以下舉例：
字尾
1.-itis means inflammation ex: cystitis(膀胱炎)、hepatitis(肝炎)、gastritis(胃炎)
2.-therapy means treatment ex: chemotherapy(化療)、radiotherapy(放射線治療)、 syphilotherapy(梅毒治療)
3.-oma means tumor ex: myoma(肌瘤)、carcinoma(癌症)
字首
1. cyst- means urinary bladder ex: cystoscopy(膀胱鏡檢查)、cystostomy(膀胱造廔)
2. hepat- means liver ex: hepatology (肝臟學) 、hepatolithiasis (肝內膽管結石)
3. hypo- means under or low ex:hypothermia (低體溫)、hypotension(低血壓)
4. hyper- means over,too much ex: hyperthermia(高體溫) hypertension(高血壓)
5. anti- means against ex: antitoxin(抗毒素)、antibiotic(抗生素)
除此之外，醫學縮寫更是不勝枚舉，而且有些醫學縮寫是在字典裡找不到的，這是各個醫院習慣用詞的關係，唯有真正接觸臨床過的醫學專業人員，醫學翻譯英文才不致於有誤差。
