Harem stallions fight for the females and protect their harems against predators and the bachelor males, which are non-breeding males without a harem. Credit: Katalin Ozogány The findings reveal that wild horses, just like humans, live in a complex, multilevel society. The organization and even past and future shifts in group dynamics can be deciphered using high-definition aerial footage. Researchers from the Hungarian Research Network (HUN-REN), the University of Debrecen (UD), the Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE), and the Hortobágy National Park Directorate studied the social dynamics of the Przewalski’s horse herd in Hortobágy. They utilized drone technology combined with extensive population monitoring data for their analysis. By deploying two drones, the team meticulously monitored the movements of the herd of 278 Przewalski’s horses with high temporal and spatial resolution, while individually identifying most of the animals. The results show that wild horses, just like humans, live in a complex, multilevel society, the structure of which ‒ and even group changes in the past and future ‒ can be understood with the help of high-resolution aerial videos. The paper presenting the research was published in the prestigious scientific journal Nature Communications. In Hortobágy National Park, Hungary, harems of Przewalski’s horses come together to form a large multilevel herd. Each harem consists of a single male – the harem stallion – and several females and their juvenile offspring. Credit: Katalin Ozogány Investigating the social behavior of a large group of animals is time-consuming work if one uses classical observation methods. However, the study published in Nature Communications highlights that by collecting high-resolution data, even a few minutes of footage of animal movements can provide enough information to learn about the social structure of the population and even draw conclusions about the past and future dynamics of the group. “We wanted to investigate the group movements of the Przewalski’s horse herd in Hortobágy, Hungary. However, observing nearly 300 horses at the same time is not an easy task,” says Katalin Ozogány, the first author of the study, a member of the HUN-REN–UD Behavioural Ecology Research Group of the Hungarian Research Network and the University of Debrecen (Hungary). “We took aerial videos of the herd using drones while they were moving around the reserve, and based on the footage, we determined the movement routes of all the individuals of the herd with high spatiotemporal resolution.” Multilevel Societies The multilevel social structure that is also characteristic of humans is rare in animals. It is mainly found in primates but also occurs in cetaceans, elephants, and some ungulates that individuals form smaller family groups (for example harems or a group of related females led by a matriarch), and these family groups form a larger, looser community. youtube.com/watch?v=H2BhFjEbZDE Video abstract of the research. Credit: University of Debreceni Przewalski’s horses have been living in Hortobágy since 1997 in the Pentezug reserve. In the first years after founding the population, the harems of wild horses lived in their own home ranges and rarely interacted with each other. For over a decade, however, the harems together form a large herd, in which harems can still be distinguished, but they move together in the reserve. The researchers studied the group movements of this complex herd, made up of harems. Analysis of Collective Movements Reveals Social Behavior Analysis of the herd’s movements yielded surprising results. “The individuals of the group coordinate their movements and align with each other, and by detecting these fine interactions between the individuals, it turned out that we can assess the herd’s social network based on the group movements,” explains lead author Máté Nagy, head of the Collective Behaviour ‘Lendület’ Research Group of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and Eötvös Loránd University (Hungary). Przewalski’s horses are the last living subspecies of wild horses, native to Mongolia. Their Mongolian name “takhi” means “spirit”. Credit: Katalin Ozogány The researchers combined the short-term movement observations of a few minutes with the long-term population monitoring data of the national park going back two decades. Since the establishment of the reserve, the wild horses have been individually recognized by the park staff who regularly collected data on population changes. “Thanks to population monitoring, we know the parentage of the animals, which we also confirm with genetic sampling, as well as their place in the social system, that is, we regularly record which individual belongs to which harem,” says co-author Viola Kerekes, project leader of the Hortobágy National Park Directorate. The Herd’s Social Network The analyses showed that the social relations of wild horses are related to kinship and familiarity of the animals. For example, female horses (mares) are closer to each other in the social network if they have been harem mates for a longer time. Kinship may play a significant role in the organization of harems into herds since harems of sibling stallions (the single breeding male in a harem) are closer to each other in the social network than harems of unrelated stallions. Between the closer harems, at the same time, the dispersal of mares was greater, which also contributes to the relations between harems through familiarity. “It is an exceptional opportunity to explore the social network of an entire population and its dynamics,” explains co-author Attila Fülöp, a researcher at the Babeş-Bolyai University (Romania) and the HUN-REN–UD Behavioural Ecology Research Group. It turned out that older and larger harems, which typically belong to older and more experienced stallions, occupy more central locations in the herd’s social network. A possible explanation is that harem stallions form an alliance to protect their harems more effectively against the bachelor males. Future Group Dynamics “One of the surprising outcomes of the study is that we can infer future group dynamics by observing current movement,” adds Zoltán Barta, lead author, head of the Department of Evolutionary Zoology of the University of Debrecen and the HUN-REN–UD Behavioural Ecology Research Group. The researchers showed that mares that lived in different harems at the time of the aerial observations but became harem mates within two years after the observations, were already moving in more similar routes than the other mares. So, through the movement analysis, it was also possible to conclude which mares will leave their harem in the next two years and which harem they will transfer to. “Not only did we learn new, previously unknown details about the social life of Przewalski’s horses, but we highlighted that drone observations, which can be applied even in wild populations, can provide very detailed information.” Reference: “Fine-scale collective movements reveal present, past and future dynamics of a multilevel society in Przewalski’s horses” by Katalin Ozogány, Viola Kerekes, Attila Fülöp, Zoltán Barta and Máté Nagy, 5 September 2023, Nature Communications. DOI: 10.1038/s41467-023-40523-3 A study suggests a worm named after late-night comedian Conan O’Brien may be contributing to the decrease in Caribbean spiny lobster landings. (AI-generated image of “worm that looks like Conan O’Brien.” See an actual image of Carcinonemertes conanobrieni below.) A nemertean worm, Carcinonemertes conanobrieni, discovered by a Clemson University biologist, is suspected to negatively impact the reproduction of Caribbean spiny lobsters, thereby contributing to their decreased numbers. The worm’s effect on the lobster’s reproductive cycle could have significant implications for the marine ecosystem and the lobster industry. A species of nemertean worm discovered by a Clemson University marine biologist five years ago affects the reproductive performance of Caribbean spiny lobsters, a critical species in the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico. Antonio Baeza, an associate professor in the Department of Biological Sciences, discovered the new worm while researching parental behaviors of the spiny lobster Panulirus argus in the Florida Keys. Baeza good-naturedly named the worm Carcinonemertes conanobrieni after comedian Conan O’Brien because of its physical characteristics — long-bodied and pale with a slight tint of orange. The worm has been found off the coast of the Colombian and West Indies. The spiny lobster is an ecologically significant and commercially lucrative species in the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico. A worm discovered by a Clemson University scientist is affecting its reproductive performance. Credit: Clemson University College of Science Caribbean spiny lobsters, which get their name from the forward-pointing spines that cover their bodies, live in the Atlantic Ocean’s tropical and subtropical waters as far north as North Carolina, as well as the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico. They are one of the Caribbean’s most ecologically significant and commercially lucrative species. Caribbean spiny lobster landings have decreased over the past decade. Scientists don’t know why, although they have identified several possibilities – overfishing, declining water quality, global climate change, and environmental degradation. A new study published in the journal BMC Zoology shows the worm discovered by Baeza is likely a contributor, too. Baeza discovered the Carcinonemertes conanobrieni while he was conducting research on parental behaviors of the Caribbean spiny lobster. Credit: Clemson University College of Science Artisan fishers caught 90 egg-bearing spiny lobsters near Pueblo Viejo, Magdalena, Colombia, to determine whether C. conanobrieni affected embryo mortality, fecundity, and reproductive output in brooding females. Of the 90 lobsters, nearly 88% had either nemertean worms or worm cysts and egg masses. Embryo mortality, indicated by empty capsules and dead embryos, ranged between 0% and 43.81% in infected gravid females. Embryo mortality was absent in non-infected gravid female lobsters. Researchers also confirmed that the presence of the worm impacted reproductive output. Antonio Baeza, associate professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Clemson University. Credit: Clemson University College of Science “The effect of the parasite varies from female to female. Some may be heavily affected; others may not. We don’t know why yet,” Baeza said. “We know the egg predator is affecting the population level, but we cannot say for how much of an effect yet, whether it will be bad or devastating because we don’t have that data yet.” Carcinonemertes worms have been responsible for the collapse of crustacean fisheries on the west coast of North America. Caribbean spiny lobsters are vital for the marine ecosystem because they are prey for many predators, including sharks, large fish such as grouper and snapper, turtles, and octopuses. They are predators, too, and eat snails, crabs, and clams. The clams are part of a different tropic chain, so when lobsters eat them, they link tropic networks and energy flow through the entire ecosystem. “A whole industry and coastal communities along the entire Caribbean basin rely on this species,” Baeza said. Baeza said if researchers can understand the prevalence of the egg predator and its effects, a modeling approach might predict future landings and inform those managing the fishery to minimize adverse effects. In addition to Baeza, Clemson graduate student Natalie Stephens and researchers from Colombia and Chile contributed to the study. Their findings are detailed in the paper “The effect of the egg-predator Carcinonemertes conanobrieni (Nemertea) on the reproductive performance of the Caribbean spiny lobster Panulirus argus.” Reference: “The effect of the egg-predator Carcinonemertes conanobrieni (Nemertea) on the reproductive performance of the Caribbean spiny lobster Panulirus argus” by Amanda Berben, Natalie C. Stephens, Jaime Gonzalez-Cueto, Yulibeth Velasquez, Sigmer Quiroga, María Teresa González and J. Antonio Baeza, 26 June 2023, BMC Zoology. DOI: 10.1186/s40850-023-00165-w The Ayeyarwady pit viper, a new species discovered in Myanmar by Dr. Chan Kin Onn, illustrates the complexities of species differentiation in pit vipers. This species, which displays traits of both the redtail and mangrove pit vipers, was initially thought to be a hybrid but was confirmed as distinct through genomic analysis. Credit: Wolfgang Wüster Finding and describing new species can be a tricky endeavor. Scientists typically look for distinctive characters that can differentiate one species from another. However, variation is a continuum that is not always easy to quantify. At one extreme, multiple species can look alike even though they are different species—these are known as cryptic species. At the other extreme, a single species can be highly variable, creating an illusion of being different species. But what happens when you encounter both extremes simultaneously? Herpetologist Dr Chan Kin Onn (previously at the Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum, Singapore, now with the University of Kansas Biodiversity Institute and Natural History Museum, USA) led a study describing a new species of pit viper from Myanmar that is both similar and different from its sister species. The discovery is published in the open-access journal ZooKeys. Challenges in Differentiating Asian Pit Vipers “Asian pit vipers of the genus Trimeresurus are notoriously difficult to tell apart, because they run the gamut of morphological variation. Some groups contain multiple species that look alike, while others may look very different but are actually the same species,” they say. The redtail pit viper (Trimeresurus erythrurus) occurs along the northern coast of Myanmar and is invariably green with no markings on its body. A different species called the mangrove pit viper (Trimeresurus purpureomaculatus) occurs in southern Myanmar. This species typically has distinct dorsal blotches, and incredibly variable dorsal coloration including gray, yellow, brown, and black, but never green. Interestingly, in central Myanmar, sandwiched between the distribution of the redtail pit viper and the mangrove pit viper, a unique population exists that is green with varying degrees of blotchiness, which appears to be a blend between the redtail pit viper and the mangrove pit viper. A specimen of Trimeresurus ayeyarwadyensis from Meinmahla Kyun Wildlife Sanctuary, Pyapon District, Ayeyarwady Region in Myanmar. Credit: Hla tun Initial Hypothesis and Genomic Revelation “This mysterious population in central Myanmar baffled us and we initially thought that it could be a hybrid population,” the researchers said. In a separate paper, Dr Chan used modern genomic techniques and determined that the population in central Myanmar was actually a distinct species and not a hybrid population. But this was not the end of the story. The researchers discovered another surprise when they examined the snake’s morphological features: they found that the new species was also highly variable. Certain populations are dark green with distinct blotches, easily distinguishable from its closest relative, the redtail pit viper, which is bright green with no blotches. However, some populations of the new species are bright green with no blotches and look virtually identical to the redtail pit viper. “This is an interesting phenomenon, where one species is simultaneously similar and different from its closest relative (the redtail pit viper). We think that at some point in the past, the new species may have exchanged genes with the redtail pit viper from the north and the mangrove pit viper from the south,” says Dr Chan. The new species is called the Ayeyarwady pit viper (Trimeresurus ayeyarwadyensis) in reference to the Ayeyarwady River, which is the largest and one of the most important rivers in Myanmar. The river forms an expansive delta that is bounded by the Pathein River to the west and the Yangon River to the east. These rivers and their associated basins also mark the westernmost and easternmost distribution boundaries of the Ayeyarwady pit viper.
