Author- Delia Owens

In 2018, after 10 years of struggling to write it, the American zoologist and occasional non-fiction author Delia Owens published her debut work of fiction, Where the Crawdads Sing. She was 69 years old, not typically the age at which a writer tends to first spread their wings, nor to become a literary sensation. The project had been a whim, and she’d told nobody about it. Spending that decade at her laptop, adding chapters in fits and starts while waiting for the inspiration to flow, was simply a nice way to pass the time.(r.9)

“Marsh is a space of light, where grass grows in water, and water flows into the sky.”I placed my novel in the wild coastal marsh of North Carolina for both practical and poetic reasons.  The story begins with the young heroine, Kya, growing up mostly alone in a raw-cut shack, deep in the wilds of the marsh.  By the time all of her family has walked away for good, she is ten years old, and the author wanted her story to be believable, not fanciful.  As she wrote in the first chapter, “maybe it was mean country, but not an inch was lean.”  Layers of life – mussels, oysters, crabs, and fish were piled on the land and in the water.  The temperature was moderate and firewood available, making it truly possible for a ten-year old girl to survive in this setting. Just as important, she chose this wilderness because the author grew up in South Georgia and was familiar with the bright marsh and darker swamp. The author with her mother canoed through these waterways, camped on these shores.  Writing about it came easily. Then there is the symbolism and poetry of the marsh that flows through the story.  The bright, open waterways represent a place where human behaviors such as love, family, and learning unfold.  On the other side, the murkier swamp presented the setting for less desirable, but sometimes essential, human traits.  Most of us must navigate both during our lives, and hopefully find our way back into that space of light.(r.3)

Biography

Delia Owens is an American author, zoologist, and conservationist. She is best known for her 2018 novel Where the Crawdads Sing.

Owens was born and raised in Southern Georgia, where she spent most of her life in or near true wilderness.

Owens met Mark Owens in a protozoology class at the University of Georgia when they were both graduate students studying biology. They married in 1973, and in 1974 moved to southern Africa to study animals in the Kalahari Desert and Zambia. She wrote about Africa in her memoirs Cry of the Kalahari, The Eye of the Elephant, and Secrets of the Savanna. The couple were expelled from Botswana and are wanted for questioning in Zambia in relation to a murder investigation. They are no longer married. Since returning to the United States, Delia Owens has been involved in bear conservation.

Owens grew up in southern Georgia; she has mostly lived in or near true wilderness.  She knew she wanted to be a writer, but she decided on a career in science.

The couple moved to Africa in 1974 for 23 years, travelling for some time before making camp in the Kalahari Desert, Botswana. Cry of the Kalahari was written about the couples experience there. After they campaigned against the local cattle industry, Botswanan government officials expelled them from the country. The Owenses then settled in North Luangwa National Park, Zambia, and later in Mpika, Zambia in the early 1990s. Cry of the Kalahari and her two other non-fictional bestselling books, The Eye of the Elephant and Secrets of the Savanna, all concern the couples research and conservation work. In Zambia they contributed to reducing the poaching of elephants, by helping poachers earn a living with skills such as beekeeping, carpentry, midwifery, and weaving.

Delia has contributed articles to Natural History and International Wildlife, where she was a "roving editor" for more than 20 years.

Delia and Mark Owens are divorced. For many years, after 10 years of struggling to write it ,Delia lived in Idaho which is twenty miles from Canada. However in 2019–2020, she moved to a former horse farm near Asheville, North Carolina.

Owens is the co-founder of the Owens Foundation for Wildlife Conservation in Stone Mountain, Georgia. She has also worked as a roving editor for International Wildlife, lectured throughout North America and participated in conservation efforts for the grizzly bear throughout the United States.

She released her debut novel, Where the Crawdads Sing, in 2018, which topped The New York Times Fiction Best Sellers of 2019 and The New York Times Fiction Best Sellers of 2020 for 32 non-consecutive weeks and was on the list for 135 weeks in total. It also gave rise to a successful feature film. In 2022, Reese Witherspoon acquired movie rights for her production company to bring the novel to the screen.

Supposed Zambian murder case

Owens former husband, Mark, has been accused of operating a "shoot to kill" policy against poachers while the couple were living in Zambia. ABC News aired a report in 1996, titled "Deadly Game: The Mark and Delia Owens Story". The report featured the killing of a poacher in Zambia, allegedly committed by Delias stepson, Christopher. To this day, Delia Owens denies the incident, explaining she was not involved, and there was never a case. However, her 2018 best selling novel, Where the Crawdads Sing, has aroused suspicion from those on her book tour about the parallels between the main character Kya and her case, and Delias own alleged accusation. The Owenses have denied the accusations. No charges were brought against Owens or her ex-husband Mark, or stepson Christopher. Zambian officials told Jeffery Goldberg, a journalist and editor-in-chief of The Atlantic Magazine, that they do not believe Owens is a suspect. However, they do believe that she is the most important witness. Owens has never been sought for questioning by the Zambian authorities.(r.7)

Preface

The reason why I choose this book is owing by the introduction of ICRT. The radio host suggested if you don’t like to read in this life, the crawdads sing will make you enjoying to read. If you try to find the best book to read in this life, the crawdads sing is the best choice.

The second reason why I choose this book, is the author and the zoologist , Delia Owens who wrote this book while she was 70-year-old now. She is a dreamaker to fly to Africa with her hub for doing the Wildlife Conservation. Delia also has contributed articles to Natural History and International Wildlife, where she was a "roving editor" for more than 20 years.

During her book tour of the “where the crawdads sing”. she was aroused by people’s doubt about the parallels between the main character Kya and her case of the poachers suspicious death in Africa. Later on, Owens are forbidden to go back to Africa.

Delia and Mark are divorced for many years, she moved to a former horse farm near Asheville, North Carolina. Nature is earth mother for Delia and Kya forever.

Poetic story filled with natural protection, kay, a weird and careless sound got educated by the nature mother who taught her how to survive and how to keep on going with wisdom.

In 1969, a body was found in Barkley Bay, North Carolina. The deceased was Chase, a promising young athlete. There was an unknown red fiber material on Chases clothes. The police nicknamed the mysterious "Swamp Girl" A red ski hat was found in Kya’s home, which matched the fibers on Chases clothing. Kya was detained as a suspect. Tom, a retired lawyer with a kind-hearted personality, volunteered to be Kya’s defense lawyer. He wanted to help Kya, who had experienced domestic violence, grew up alone in a swamp area, had no formal education, and was hungry. A woman who is discriminated against and bullied by small town residents.

"People often forget about the creatures that live in shells..." Kya

"Swamp Murders" is adapted from the novel of the same name by Delia Owens. The film tells Kya’s life story in reverse chronological order: her father has been violent for many years, which led to her mother and brothers and sisters running away one by one, her financial disadvantage and her differences from others. The lifestyle of the residents in the town made Kya marginalized. After her father passed away, Kya did not want to be sent to a foster home by the Social Affairs Bureau, so she chose an independent and low-key lifestyle. When she grew up, Kya fell in love twice, once She fell in love with Tate, who also grew up in a swamp area. Tate taught her how to read, and Kya showed him how to record her detailed observations of natural creatures and ecology in hand-drawing; the other time was with a man in the town. The secret love song of Chase, a man of great influence. With Chase’s company, Kya has a deeper understanding of love and human nature.

The Chinese title of the film is "Swamp Murder", which sounds scary, but the film itself has a lyrical mood and almost no bloody scenes. The film focuses on the discussion of different types of violence: the violence comes from the domestic violence of Kya’s father, the indifference of the small town residents, Kyas family chose to leave the swamp but had no choice but to wait. Violence also came from the young Kya, who finally plucked up the courage to go to school after being persuaded by the grocery store owner. She walked out of the alley barefoot and almost collided with an oncoming boy riding a bicycle. The boy was hit by a passerby. He scolded him and asked him why he was not careful while riding? The boy said naturally: "There was a girl coming out of the alley just now. She just blocked the line of sight so that I didnt see the person in front of me." The boy quickly shied away the responsibility. The person he was shifting blame to was Kya, who looked sloppy and dirty in appearance. elegant. And this boy happens to be: Chase.

This scene reveals the class gap between Chase and Kya. The young Chase quickly puts the problem on the weaker ones without feeling that he is at fault. This impression is repeated in the scene where the adult Chase approaches Kya for the first time. When Chase saw Kya holding the groceries he had just bought from the grocery store, he immediately offered to help Kya get the groceries as a "gentleman". Kya refused Chases help, but he still insisted on helping (this was a good intention). ? Or overbearing?). Later, Chase and Kya met. He picked up a shell on the beach. Kya easily told the Latin name and origin of the shell. Chase said in a surprised tone: I didnt expect the swamp girl to know so much (if Kya) Chas may feel "normal" if he doesnt understand anything). And when Chase visited Kyas residence for the first time, he didnt seem too polite and casually browsed through Keyas paintings and books on the shelf (would Chase still behave like this if he visited a higher-class home)?

"One thing I learned from my dad is that these men always have to throw the last punch..."

The relationship between Chase and Kya seems to be generous and natural, but his various reactions always have a superior attitude. He talks about respecting women, and in many actions, he shows that Kya should put "him" first in everything. Even Chase had no intention of introducing Kya to his family or friends. He also hoped that Kya could be considerate of him and understand his "pain." Is Chase a bad guy? I think his behavior shows what is common among small-town groups: they feel that this is how class should be, and how men and women should get along. The evil thing about Chase is that even if he commits violence, he may not realize it (everyone does it, and over time, they dont think he is particularly excessive). This is also the tragedy of Chase. I think even at the last moment of his life, Chase probably didnt know how he got to this point...

The main title of "Swamp Murders" is "Who killed Chase?" The real focus of the film is "violence that has been ignored for a long time." Who the murderer is is not that important to this film. What is important is Why do people collectively ignore Kya’s plight? Why can people verbally attack Kya without being punished? Why did all the blame immediately point to Kya as soon as Chase died? In the film, Tom intentionally asked Kya to take the witness stand and ask her to defend herself in person. Kya rejected Toms proposal. She did not want to beg for mercy from the jury. She said that those people (town residents) laughed at her, attacked her, and harassed her. , she said the jury was not deciding her fate but judging themselves.

They are judging themselves. Yes, if there is no conclusive evidence to prove that Kya committed murder, then what the jury will ultimately have to face is their own hearts. They have to choose to believe or not to believe Kya, and they have to choose their feelings about this matter (murder case) ) way of “interpretation”. This is also the most ambiguous and interesting setting of "Swamp Murders", because the jury finally made a verdict of "not guilty". This decision may be based on the fact that there is insufficient evidence, but it may also be based on the jurys "not guilty" verdict. On top of the "sense of guilt", the guilt comes from the small town residents looking back at their own evil after the death of Chase, about prejudice, about discrimination, about societys unkindness to women and low-level disadvantaged people, about... their own past She blamed herself for not doing more to improve Kyas situation.

Kyas ability to escape jail seems to be a manifestation of everyones tacit understanding and has the meaning of atonement (compensation). Watching "Swamp Murders" reminded me of the documentary "O.J.: Made in America", which mentioned that O.J. Simpson was accused of murder in 1994 (killing his ex-wife and her friend), and in the end The documentary pointed out that behind this high-profile case was not just a simple murder, but also triggered discussions on race and class issues. The black community believed that Simpson was framed as a result of white peoples suppression of black people. Simpson The final acquittal was like an unprecedented victory for the black community (whether Simpson committed the murder became a secondary issue). Why do you associate "Swamp Murders" with The Simpsons Murders? In addition to the different opinions on the truth of the murder, Simpson was charged with murder. He did not turn himself in to the police station as scheduled, but drove away, which became the most sensational news at the time (the police chase Simpson was live broadcast on television), and in the film "Swamp Murders" , the police were preparing to arrest Qiya and bring her to justice, and she also chose to stage a chase scene with the police in the swamp area...

"You cant trust anyone, you have to protect yourself."

Halfway through "Swamp Murders", I wrote down the title "Fried Green Tomatoes" (Fried Green Tomatoes, 1991) in my notebook. On the one hand, the narrative mood and atmosphere of the movie were different from the reality of "Fried Green Tomatoes". Very similar, on the one hand I felt like "Swamp Murders" was going to end very similarly to "Fried Green Tomatoes" (and it did). If you like "Swamp Murder", I also recommend you to pick up "Fried Green Tomatoes", you wont be disappointed.

"Swamp Murders" cost approximately US$24 million and ultimately grossed US$90 million at the U.S. box office. It is a long-selling work that relies on the audiences word-of-mouth effect. The movie cannot be said to be particularly outstanding, but it is steady and steady with no obvious mistakes. Kyas character setting of being resolute and not bowing to the world should be able to touch the hearts of many viewers. As for the actors, Daisy Edgar-Jones, who plays Kya, has attracted attention from the TV series "Normal People". Her performance in "Swamp Murders" is different from "Normal People", but Equally exciting. In addition, Taylor John Smith, who plays Tate, and Harris Dickinson, who plays Chase, have eye-catching looks and their performances also left a good impression on me.

"Where Crawdads Sing" is a story took place in the swamp area of North Carolina, where a little girl and her father, mother, two brothers and two children The two sisters live together, and the family only relies on the fathers income to support the family.

The poor and humble couple are miserable. The bad-tempered father beats the whole family away, leaving only Kya who is too young to run away. But the last family member to run away is the father.

On the first day of school at a young age, Kya was overwhelmed by an overwhelming amount of verbal discrimination. That was her only schooling experience.

From the perspective of little Kya, there are only three approachable good people in the entire swamp, Tate, her childhood sweetheart, and a black couple who runs a grocery store. She makes a living by digging mussels and selling them to the grocery store owner nicknamed Jumping. , in exchange for daily necessities and fuel for the boat. The proprietress often gave Kya some second-hand clothes and shoes from the church’s donation box.

From time to time, she had to evade the visiting Social Affairs Bureau personnel. Kya was very good at using terrain and features to hide. She knew how to wipe out the traces she left. The power of the boat was no match for her pursuers, so she jumped into the water and swam away, just as she did. All the creatures that live with her in the swamp, at the moment of life and death, just run away with all their might!

Tate and Kya reunited in their teenage years, and he taught her how to read, read classic literature, and delve into the profound mysteries of biology.

Inheriting her mothers painting talent, Kya began to draw creatures in the swamp area. With Tates help and encouragement, she collected feathers of different birds. The elegant layout and hand-drawn pictures throughout the house made Tate feel distressed and admired for this independent living Kya. The two of them had been friends since they talked about everything, and over time they fell in love and became boyfriend and girlfriend.

Like all rural children, their future lies in the distance. Finally, it was time for Tate to leave home to study in college. The two were separated, and the boy promised that he would definitely come back after completing his studies. He also suggested that the girl transfer her hand-drawn works to publishers. There are few such publications on the market. Maybe the girl does not have to make a living digging mussels in the morning.

Several years later, the boy did not come back as promised, and the girl was in grief. Another important person in her life left her cruelly.

At this time, Chase, a young man from a wealthy family, appeared, filling the pain and loss caused by Tates departure, and opening Kyas heart again. However, Chase is Kyas world, but Kya is just Chases secret garden. , Chase’s world consists of rich parents, friends from rich families, and a well-matched fiancée. When the mask is revealed, Chase becomes angry with shame and turns into a horrible lover.

One day, Chase’s body was found in the swamp directly below the fire tower. It was suspected that he fell from the back of the fire tower. All the unfavorable evidence pointed to Kya. The decision of life and death was made by a jury composed of fellow villagers who lived in the neighboring area. Most of the residents were one-sided and pointed the finger at Kya, believing that she was the murderer. In court, the prosecution lawyer continued to use various far-fetched explanations to confuse the public. In fact, Kya had a clear alibi. The accusations are all inferences and have no basis in fact.

There were several court battles, and there was no shouting and screaming, but every word moved peoples hearts. Several witnesses took turns to appear in the battle. It seemed that they were helpers brought by the prosecution lawyer, and they were all used by Kya’s defense lawyer to clear Kyas mind. suspicion.

The closing argument made by Miltons lawyer made it clear. When people are judging Kya, they are judging themselves. They want to use public opinion to find a scapegoat for Chases death, because the so-called evidence of the prosecution There is no factual basis for this. Chases death may be purely accidental.

Not Guilty, Kya was acquitted in court. At the end of the story, Tate and Kya reconciled. After they got married, they lived like a couple of gods. They continued to conduct biological observations in the swamp area and continued to write and publish books until one day. The old Kya saw her mother coming back to pick her up, but Tate found that Kya was dead and lying on the boat.

One day when Tate was sorting out Kyas belongings, he flipped through Kyas notebook and discovered a huge secret, "Kya is really the murderer of Chase s murder!"

Questions(r.1):

1.     Before becoming a New York Times bestselling novelist, Delia Owens was a zoologist. She’s written three nonfiction books with her former husband Mark Owens about her experiences with animals. How do the themes of this novel and Owens’s style of writing reflect her interests and work with animals?

(1) 70-year-old Delia Owens published this virgin book debut, she had divorced and  stayed in Africa for the animal research for 20 years. Kya is the reflection of Delia and stands for her to talk about her past experience.

(2) Marsh is not swamp. Marsh is a space of light where grass grows in water where water flows into the sky. Then within the marsh, here and there true swamp.濕地不是沼澤,濕地是光的空間,這裡的草生在水中,而水會流入天際。在濕地中,不時會看見真正的沼澤。

It don"t say that in the Bible. Be careful. And the King shall answer and say unto them, verily say unto thee, inasmuch as ye hath done it unto the least of these, my brethren, ye have done it unto me.

聖經裡面可沒叫你「小心」王正要回答說:「我實在告訴你們,這些事你們既做在我最小的弟兄上,就是做在我身上。」

Fall gave way to winter. Winter to spring. The only constant in nature is change.

Whenever I stumbled, the marsh caught me. At some unclaimed moment, at last, the heart pain seeped away, like water into sand. Still there, but deep.

每次我跌倒,沼澤總會接住我,到了某一刻,心痛終於漸漸消散,就像流進沙中的水,依然存在,卻深不可見。

(3) Kya is the real murderer. Thats what Kya once said when the publisher was having a meal: "Some female insects eat their mates, and fireflies have two different light signals. One is for mating, and the other is to attract males to eat it. Nature There is no dark side, it’s just about creating a way of survival and overcoming difficulties.” In other words, Kya does not think that she is killing people, but another way of survival given to her by nature.(r.12)

While sorting out Kyas belongings, Tate discovered the crucial piece of evidence, the shell necklace. Kya was the real culprit who killed Chase. Detective Sherlock once said that if all impossibilities are eliminated, the remaining one must be possible no matter how impossible it is. Kya took advantage of this blind spot and committed the crime in just one hour.(r.12)

2.     Discuss the series of events that led to Kya living alone in the marsh. Why do you think Kya’s mother leaves in the beginning? Do you agree with her decision?

(1)   Whether is love or not, doesn’t matter, but isolation matters. It triggers our soul to get closer to defend it. Once you get across the disdainfulness, you make yourself live in danger. Only when the caterpillar goes to the end, it will have a chance to become a butterfly.

(2)   Marsh explore the marsh. Marsh is not swamp. Marsh is a space of light, where grass grows in water , and water flows into the sky. Her mother can’t be with her, so she guided her to get closer to the marsh where is her best teacher to give a way to stand up by her own feet.

(3)  Marsh is not swamp. Marsh is a space of light where grass grows in water where water flows into the sky. Then within the marsh, here and there true swamp.濕地不是沼澤,濕地是光的空間,這裡的草生在水中,而水會流入天際。在濕地中,不時會看見真正的沼澤。

3.     In various biographies, including Delia Owens own website, it is told that Owens mother, also an outside-girl, encouraged Delia to explore far into the oak forests, saying “Go way out yonder where the crawdads sing.” What does this mean? In what ways have your own mothers been encouraging influences in your lives?

(1) Yonder yonder

of the swamp

Where the crawdad swim

Deeper deeper

Of the Marsh

Where the crawdad sing

A song about love

Stronger than isolation

(2)Her mom teaches her no matter you find your marriage or not, you have to get along with yourself.

(3) Kya’s father has been violent for many years, which led to her mother and brothers and sisters running away one by one, her financial disadvantage and her differences from others. The lifestyle of the residents in the town made Kya marginalized. After her father passed away, Kya did not want to be sent to a foster home by the Social Affairs Bureau, so she chose an independent and low-key lifestyle.

4.     When reading reviews of Where the Crawdads Sing it is interesting to make parallels to Delia Owens own life. Do you think having biographical or contextual information about an author or text adds or detracts from the reading of fiction?

her style leads us to a poetic natural legend

(1)

The firefly

luring him was as easy

as flashing valentines

but like a lady firefly

they hid a secret call to die

a fianl touch

unfinished

the last step, a trap

down , down he falls

his eyes still holding mine

until they see another world

i saw them change

first a question

then an answer

finally an end

and love itself passing

to whatever it was before i began

(2)like firefly, our life is short flashing valentines, sometimes we got tempted(or nudged) by our environment, value, education, etc. but we will learn our lessons when we flew away.

Even the life of firefly is short, but it can protect you in the dark

No matter what the answer we are looking for, the answer has bee there and waiting for us to find out.

(3) Sand keeps secrets better than mud. At the mud holes and swampy areas near the tower, a profusion of detailed stores revealed themselves: a raccoon with her four young had trailed in and out of the muck; a snail had woven a lacy pattern interrupted by the arrival of a bear; and a small turtle had lain in the cool mud, it’s belly forming a shallow bowl. Sand grains shifted into formless dimples with every step.

5.     Contrast Kya’s relationships with Chase and Tate. What do each of them offer her, and what does she represent to them?

(1)   Chase taught her the physical part without respect

(2)   Tate taught her the mental part with respect.

6. Once Kya was arrested, did you think she was going to be convicted? Were you surprised at the outcome? Were you surprised she never told the truth to Tate? Why do you think she did kill Chase? Did that change your opinion of Kya? The ending of Where the Crawdads Sing brings a surprising twist as we learn that Kya is actually the local poet Amanda Hamilton. We discover that her husband had no idea about this. Do you think it is ok to have big secrets from your partner?

(1) “He must master or be mastered; while to show mercy was a weakness. Mercy did not exist in the primordial life. It was misunderstood for fear, and such misunderstandings made for death. Kill or be killed, eat or be eaten, was the law; and this mandate, down out of the depths of Time, he obeyed.” “Believing in yourself and fighting for what is right.” The call of the wild by Jack London

Kya’s mother and teacher is the nature. That’s why she follows the rule of the nature, Chase is the one leading her to get closer to the nature. Even Kya said nothing about her killing Tate. Chase would understand her without any lines.

(2) Kay: I dont know if I love him or not, but he makes me "not alone": this movie tells the truth about the essence of love. Sometimes we do know part of our partners. But it doesn’t matter to be with each other. From sharing, we make us be a better man.

(3) Amanda Hamilton is a writer who publishes poems in Barkley Cove’s local newspaper. Throughout her life, Kya recites Amanda’s verses, which are usually about love, nature, freedom, survival, necessity , violence or independence. Shortly after Kya dies, Tate discovers that Amanda Hamilton was Kya’s penname, realizing that she has been writing and publishing poems for years under this pseudonym. More importantly, he finds an unpublished Amanda Hamilton poem called “The Firefly,” which makes it clear once and for all that Kya murdered Chase Andrews, despite the fact that she was found not guilty in court.

7.It has been said that Where the Crawdads Sing is similar to Harper Lees To Kill a Mockingbird. Why would someone make this claim? Do you think it is a fair statement to make?

 (1) “Mockingbirds don’t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don’t eat up people’s gardens, don’t nest in corncribs, they don’t do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That’s why it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.-To Kill A Mockingbird”

(2) They are judging themselves. Yes, if there is no conclusive evidence to prove that Kya committed murder, then what the jury will ultimately have to face is their own hearts.

Questions(r.1):

1.Before becoming a New York Times bestselling novelist, Delia Owens was a zoologist. She’s written three nonfiction books with her former husband Mark Owens about her experiences with animals. How do the themes of this novel and Owens’s style of writing reflect her interests and work with animals?

—> This novel  “Where the Crawdads Sing, “ which is set in the marshlands of North Carolina and about a coming-of-age story of a young girl named Kya is evident for Delia Owens’s background as a zoologist. The themes of the novel include survival, necessity, and violence, independence vs. human connection, education, coming of age, and adulthood, and prejudice, intolerance, and acceptance. These themes are closely related to Owens’s work with animals and her interest in the natural world. Furthermore, Owens’s writing style is characterized by vivid descriptions of the natural world and its inhabitants. She uses her knowledge of animals and their behavior to create a rich and immersive setting for this novel, making this novel so notable for its lyrical prose and its exploration of complex themes.

2. Discuss the series of events that led to Kya living alone in the marsh. Why do you think Kya’s mother leaves in the beginning? Do you agree with her decision?

-> Kya, the protagonist was only six years old when her mother left their shack in the marsh, followed by her siblings, including her beloved 12-year-old brother Jodie, who left Kya alone with her father, a disabled World War I veteran who was prone to violent rages and drank heavily.

Kyas father gave her a dollar a week for food, and she spent most of her time in the marsh with the gulls. Mrs. Culpepper, a truant officer, took Kya to school, but she was humiliated and never returned.

Over the years, townspeople called her "dirty" "the Marsh Girl" “Missing Link," and "marsh trash.”

Kya’s father disappeared when she was ten years old, and she supported herself by selling mussels to Jumpin, an older Black man who sold gas and supplies.

Kya then met Tate, one of Jodies friends, and then Chase and his friends.

When Kva was 14 years old, she found a series of special feathers left in a tree stump in the marsh. One day, she left a special feather in return for Tate’s kindness, and after that, Tate appeared at the stump and offered to teach her to read .Tate and Kya began to meet at a secret cabin in the marsh where he taught her to read. As Kya matured, Tate brought her a biology textbook. One day, Tate found Kya sick on Point Beach and explained to her that she was having her period. Kya and Tate continued their lessons, and she invited him inside her shack and showed him her collection of natural objects. One day, Tate kissed Kya, and they began a romantic relationship. However, Tate left early for college and told Kya he would visit on the 4th of July, but he didnt return. Kya was devastated and returned to studying nature.

When Kva was 19 years old, Chase caught her eye on Point Beach, and they began a romantic relationship. However, Chase was not sincere in this relationship and was about to marry Pearl. When Kya found all these out, Chase became sexually aggressive and violent just like Kya’s dad, so Kya ran away from him. Eventually, Kya meticulously staged a murder to get rid of Chase in the fire tower, where Chase took her to apologize ten days after they met. While they were dating, Kya gave Chase a necklace made from a scallop shell.

—> Kya’s mom used to live a cozy life just as Kya’s dad said that they used to live in a nice house in Asheville owning cotton fields. Kya’s mom just couldn’t take the abusive husband anymore and got so shocked by a raged beat up by Kya’s dad that she walked away the following day. Based on Jodie’s information from Kya’s auntie, her mom was completely lost the moment she ran away, and then days later, she realized she got children, so she wrote a letter to Kya’s dad, asking to take the children with her, but Kya’s dad threatened her not to even come back. This incident should have happened before Kya’s dad burned out all the belongings of Kya’s mom.
This means she was simply broken in the abusive marriage and couldn’t help but run, but she never wanted to leave her children behind just as all the mothers do. This tragedy of mother abandoning children happened in old times when social work systems hadn’t been established, and women were at disadvantage socially and economically. In nowadays society, women should be able to seek supportive systems for help in such difficult situations and will therefore survive and look out after their children in the meantime.

—> Go way out yonder where the crawdads sing” is a phrase that Delia Owens’ mother used to say to her when she was a child. However, in this book, the phrase is spoken by Tate when Tate and Kya are looking for somewhere to go, and Tate suggests that they go to “where the crawdads sing.” Tate explains to Kya that this refers to far in the bush where critters are wild, still behaving like critters. Ultimately, “where the crawdads sing” equates to a place removed from people and wider society; this means Delia’s mom wanted her to go and embrace the wild and nature.

—>I have an older sis and an older bro. My mom allowed us to have full sovereignty in planning our own time and activities to participate in in condition that we finished all the schoolwork and kept grades excellent in the school she picked and sent us to. She supported and offered consent whatever we wanted to try or do, ranging from learning music, art, reading, to simply playing jump rope or climbing trees with our neighbor kids.  She never said no to whatever we wanted to do, to learn, or to study.

4. When reading reviews of Where the Crawdads Sing it is interesting to make parallels to Delia Owens own life. Do you think having biographical or contextual information about an author or text adds or detracts from the reading of fiction?

—>

The answer swings between two extremes over a spectrum, a research standpoint vs. entertainment.  From a research standpoint, biographical and contextual information about the author or text can enhance their understanding of the work and provide a deeper appreciation of the themes and motifs. On the other hand, simply catering to the need of being entertained, some readers prefer to approach a work of fiction without any preconceived notions or expectations and believe that biographical and contextual information can detract from the reading experience. Ultimately, it is up to the reader to decide whether or not to seek out biographical and contextual information about the author or text before reading a work of fiction. To me, I like to read blindly without knowing about the author first, unwrapping the Pandora’s box, and then enjoy researching the author to echo the worn with the author’s background.

5. Contrast Kya’s relationships with Chase and Tate. What do each of them offer her, and what does she represent to them?

—> Tate is Kya’s primary romantic interest, and their relationship is based on a deep connection and shared love of nature. Tate is Kya’s brother Jodie’s fishing friend and interacts with Kya when she was young. Though Tate left Kya for college, breaking his words, he returned years later when he realized the connection he had with Kya, which was untreatable and they were meant to be soulmates.

Chase, on the other hand, is a local boy who is popular and wealthy. He is sexually aggressive and manipulative, and he uses Kya for his own pleasure. Chase represents the outside world and the prejudice and intolerance that Kya has experienced throughout her life. He offers Kya a chance to experience a different kind of life, but it is ultimately a false promise.  Kya’s relationship with Chase is based on physical attraction and a desire for human connection, but it is ultimately destructive and leads to the tragic death of Chase.

In summary, Tate and Chase represent two different paths for Kya. Tate offers her a chance to learn and grow and represents the possibility of a life outside the marsh, while Chase represents the outside world and the prejudice and intolerance that Kya has experienced throughout her life. Kya’s relationships with both men are complex and nuanced, and they reflect the themes of the novel, including survival, independence, education, and prejudice.

—>

Kya’s trial was a turning point in the novel. Though it was unclear whether she would be convicted, while reading I was more inclined to believe an acquittal would come for her because the evidence against her was circumstantial and she was the protagonist despite the townspeople’s prejudice against her as the marsh girl. It turned out that she was found innocent by the jury.

She didn’t tell Tate about the truth maybe because she wanted to protect Tate and keep him away from this incident.  Or, she could be ashamed of this and didn’t want Tate to judge her.

The reasons behind Kya’s decision to kill Chase are complex and multifaceted. Though Kya’s bad experience with the outside world, such as prejudice and intolerance, could add to her decision in murdering Chase, I think the trauma and shadow of her abusive father would impact her more to end Chase’s being in her life.  While Chase behaved more violently and aggressively and even vandalized her house, Kya realized that man would always take the last punch, so she had to end the involvement of this man in her life, otherwise she would live in fear being harassed or even attacked by this man, which she refused.

The revelation that Kya is actually the local poet Amanda Hamilton is a surprising twist that adds another layer of complexity to the novel. Kya’s kept it a secret from Tate maybe because she wanted to keep her past separated from her present life, her life with Tate.  .

I’m a strong believer in the value of trust and honesty in a relationship. However, each person has a life of multi-faceted relationships, such as marriage, family, work, various social groups and friendships. There are things that could happen in the past and are not relevant to current life, or incidents or people that occurred or we met in other facets of life that don’t play a role in the other fields of our life. For example, we can meet many people at work that our spouse have no idea; in this case, we don’t need to reveal whatever detail that doesn’t matter to our spouse.  To lie is a terrible thing to do, but not to tell doesn’t equate to keeping a secret. Our goal is lead a happy life and make people around us happy at the same time; therefore, if certain information can pose harm, why bother to share? In summary, whether or not it is okay to keep “big secrets” from a partner is a matter of personal opinion and depends on the nature of the secret and the relationship between the parties involved.

7.It has been said that Where the Crawdads Sing is similar to Harper Lees To Kill a Mockingbird. Why would someone make this claim? Do you think it is a fair statement to make?

—> It is not uncommon for readers to draw comparisons between “Where the Crawdads Sing” and “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee since both novels are set in the American South and explore themes of prejudice, injustice, and the search for identity. In “To Kill a Mockingbird,” Scout Finch is a young girl that learns about racism and social injustice in her small town of Maycomb, Alabama, while in “Where the Crawdads Sing,” Kya Clark is s young girl that grows up in the marshlands of North Carolina and experiences prejudice and intolerance from the townspeople. Both novels also feature courtroom dramas and explore the complexities of human nature. However, it is important to note that while there are similarities between the two novels, they are also distinct works of literature with their own unique characters, settings, and themes. Whether or not it is a fair statement to make is a matter of personal opinion, but it is clear that both novels have had a profound impact on readers.
