原產地從印度到中南半島、馬來半島與印尼，因寵物鳥需求而引進至香港、臺灣與夏威夷（Roberts and Conant, 2022）。

白腰鵲鴝早年作為寵物鳥引入臺灣，在野外最早的紀錄為1994年，從下圖白腰鵲鴝歷年分布，可見2002年以前僅有零星分布，2003-2012年間分佈明顯擴散，原因是2005年時雲林族群數量大幅增加，在2013-2022年間則是於全臺廣泛分佈，僅剩花東到恆春的分佈較零星。臺灣繁殖鳥大調查的調查結果顯示從2011到2021年間的長期族群趨勢與2019到2021年間的短期族群趨勢皆為顯著上升（范等，2022）。

對於台灣本土的麻雀、綠繡眼、斑文鳥低海拔小型鳥的生存空間影響甚鉅。
