這首歌出於「悲慘世界」歌劇，是在說一個人對她人生的絕望和無助，是一首非常…非常….非常悲傷的歌，年紀越大就會感觸越深。我不太喜歡聽很匠氣(over-engineering)的唱法，我覺得蘇珊大嬸把這首歌詮釋得不錯，她曾經的夢想成真了，一個沒有故事的人，是沒有辦法唱這首歌的。蘇珊大嬸這一場是她的第一次表演(debut)，當時的她還是一顆未經雕琢的鑽石(rough diamond)，唱出來特別有味道，這一段，我們要看得是大家一開始對她的表情，和後來的轉變，很有意義。另外還有一個版本我也很喜歡，是安海瑟薇（Anne Hathaway）唱的，但她的詮釋實在是太悲傷，悲傷到會讓人覺得我們的世界就真的是一個煉獄。（但其實這才是這首歌真正的意境）
但孩子們，我希望你們的未來不會說”I dreamed a dream”（我曾經有一個夢），我希望你們未來會很興奮的對我說：「Hey, Gretel, I live out my dreams！！！！」不管身邊是不是有人講話very cynical（冷嘲熱諷）或是very snarky（很酸），繼續朝著你的理想前進就對了（要正面的喔！），你們知道，Gretel is 100% behind you and I am really proud of you all. （被我教過的學生，你們知道的，這不是一個用來呼嚨的功利本位口號。）
