１９７２年３月，美國非裔男女歌唱團體第五維度推出第七張大碟［Individually and Collectively／個人和集體］（Bell唱片發行），Bones Howe製作，樂評出色．

大碟登上告示牌流行專輯榜＃５８，副榜──R&B專輯榜＃２１．

大碟首支單曲是［(Last Night) I Didnt Get to Sleep at All／(昨晚)我根本沒睡著］

由Tony Macaulay創作，Bill Holman 編曲。

Bones Howe製作成一首靈魂／流行抒情曲，編曲精緻．旋律悅耳，女主唱Marilyn McCoo歌聲溫柔迷人．

由來自洛杉磯的 Wrecking Crew 樂隊樂手伴奏.

英國人Tony Macaulay在1972年東京參加世界流行歌曲節期間開始創作這首歌。

他遇到同場的卡本特樂團（The Carpenters），並受到啟發，創作一首模仿他們熱門歌曲［Weve Only Just Begun］的歌曲

Macaulay回憶說，由於時區變化，「我在東京整夜不眠，白天也睡得正香。所以我晚上起床就寫了這首歌」。

雖然他在東京度過無數個不眠之夜，但他在那裡創作的是旋律，而不是歌詞。

歌詞是在麥考利返回倫敦後完成的，「當時他坐出租車堵在路上……從倫敦的一邊到另一邊大約需要一個小時」。

Macaulay把這首歌的樣帶發給了卡本特樂團。

「他們說很喜歡這首歌，會把它做下來。[後來]凌晨兩點左右我接到一個電話，把我吵醒了（他們還沒搞清楚這裡和美國的時差）。他們說『哦，我們不能錄這首歌，因為裡面提到了安眠藥，安眠藥就是毒品，而我們沒提毒品。』

於是我半夜起來，重寫了最後一段歌詞，去掉了安眠藥。 」

然而，Macaulay對歌詞的改動並不滿意，所以當Bones Howe在下週聯繫他時，麥考利向第五維度樂隊推薦了“(Last Night)...”，他們把安眠藥的提法原封不動地錄了下來。

［(Last Night) I Didnt Get to Sleep at All］登上美國告示牌單曲榜＃８（1972年榜#31），

１９９１年追加白金唱片（１００萬張）認證。
