Le Rêve est une seconde vie. Je n'ai pu percer sans frémir ces portes d'ivoire ou de corne qui nous séparent du monde invisible. Les premiers instants du sommeil sont l'image de la mort ; un engourdissement nébuleux saisit notre pensée, et nous ne pouvons déterminer l'instant précis où le moi, sous une autre forme, continue l'oeuvre de l'existence. C'est un souterrain vague qui s'éclaire peu à peu, et où se dégagent de l'ombre et de la nuit les pâles figures gravement immobiles qui habitent le séjour des limbes. Puis le tableau se forme, une clarté nouvelle illumine et fait jouer ces apparitions bizarres : - le monde des Esprits s'ouvre pour nous.

1855年1月26日，巴黎人清晨起來，看到滿地積雪，這一夜巴黎奇冷無比，氣溫低達攝氏零下8度。位於中央菜市場不遠的老路燈街上，人們發現一家公寓中吊死了一個人，他不是別人，是當時文壇著名的瘋子才子錢拉·德·奈瓦爾。到底是上吊自殺，還是被人勒死，當時沒有定論，即使在一百多年後的今天仍舊是一個謎。說他自殺的人認為，奈瓦爾瘋病多次發作，發瘋時癲狂不已，苦不堪言，在清醒時，他自己也清楚地意識到這種病的危險與痛苦，自殺不失為一種徹底的擺脫方法。認為他是被殺的人提出異議：死以前，奈瓦爾活動正常，他在受到《奧蕾莉婭》的校樣後還認真作了修改，就在1月25日晚上，他還去法蘭西劇院找朋友商量修改劇本之事，並在菜市場旁邊的一家小飯館吃晚餐。兩種結論，各執己見，誰也說服不了誰，但誰又都拿不出確鑿的證據。法國文壇上的疑謎不少，但像奈瓦爾之死這樣的大謎卻實屬罕見。

其實，奈瓦爾短暫而癲狂的一生裏還有不少值得提及的事情，例如他把歌德的《浮士德》翻譯成了法語。此外，他和戈蒂埃、雨果、大仲馬甚至鋼琴家李斯特都有著深厚的交誼，幾次結伴出遊。奈瓦爾還到過埃及、黎巴嫩、君士坦丁堡、那不勒斯等國家和地區，可謂是屐痕處處。愛德華．W．薩義德（Edward W. Said，1935-2003）在他的學術名著《東方學》裡著重指出了“東方”對於奈瓦爾和福樓拜文學創作的意義。薩義德認為，奈瓦爾“諸多印象、夢想和記憶與以東方風格表達出來的華麗、優雅的敍事交織在一起”，“東方象徵著奈瓦爾對夢幻的尋求以及處於這一尋求之核心的漂泊的女人，這兩者既作為一種欲望，又作為一種失落”存在著。
的確，閱讀奈瓦爾的作品，你時刻能夠感受到一種無法言說的欲望和失落。在遺著《奧蕾莉婭》的第一部開篇，奈瓦爾即寫道：
夢是一種第二生命。能否說東方及女性給了奈瓦爾做夢的權力，而文學則賦予了奈瓦爾以重生的自由？

Legacy
The influence of Nerval's insistence on the significance of dreams on the Surrealist movement was emphasised by André Breton. The writers Marcel Proust and René Daumal were also greatly influenced by Nerval's work, as was Artaud.
Umberto Eco analyses Gérard de Nerval's Sylvie (calling it a "masterpiece") to show the use of temporal ambiguity, demystifying the "mists" during his Six Walks in the Fictional Woods.

To be even fairer, we could probably have taken over the word SUPERNATURALISM employed by Gérard de Nerval in his dedication to the Filles de feu.* (And also by Thomas Carlyle in Sartor Resartus ([Book III] Chapter VIII, "Natural Supernaturalism"), 1833-34.) It appears, in fact, that Nerval possessed to a tee the spirit with which we claim a kinship, Apollinaire having possessed, on the contrary, naught but the letter, still imperfect, of Surrealism, having shown himself powerless to give a valid theoretical idea of it. Here are two passages by Nerval which seem to me to be extremely significant in this respect:
I am going to explain to you, my dear Dumas, the phenomenon of which you have spoken a short while ago. There are, as you know, certain storytellers who cannot invent without identifying with the characters their imagination has dreamt up. You may recall how convincingly our old friend Nodier used to tell how it had been his misfortune during the Revolution to be guillotined; one became so completely convinced of what he was saying that one began to wonder how he had managed to have his head glued back on.
...And since you have been indiscreet enough to quote one of the sonnets composed in this SUPERNATURALISTIC dream-state, as the Germans would call it, you will have to hear them all. You will find them at the end of the volume. They are hardly any more obscure than Hegel's metaphysics or Swedenborg's MEMORABILIA, and would lose their charm if they were explained, if such were possible; at least admit the worth of the expression....** (See also L'Idéoréalisme by Saint-Pol-Roux.)

Certes, le tableau présenté par Gérard est délicieusement simple. Et c'est la fortune unique de son génie. Ces sensations si subjectives, si nous disons seulement la chose qui les provoque, nous ne rendons pas précisément ce qui donne du prix à nos yeux. Mais aussi, si nous essayons en analysant notre impression de rendre ce qu'elle a de subjectif, nous faisons évanouir l'image et le tableau. De sorte que par désespoir nous alimentons encore mieux nos rêveries avec ce qui nomme notre rêve sans l'expliquer, avec les indicateurs de chemin de fer, les récits de voyageurs, les noms des commerçants et des rues d'un village, les notes de M. Bazin où chaque espèce d'arbre est nommée, que dans un trop subjectif Pierre Loti. Mais Gérard a trouvé le moyen de ne faire que peindre et de donner à son tableau les couleurs de son rêve. Peut-être y a-t-il encore un peu trop d'intelligence dans sa nouvelle...
