Artificial light on coral reefs leads to increased predator activity and changes in fish behavior, with potential resilience improvements through reduced lighting. Credit: Emma Weschke New research using underwater infrared cameras reveals that artificial light disrupts the nocturnal activities of coral reef communities, causing behavioral changes in fish. Predatory fish are drawn to these artificially lit areas, disrupting the natural ecosystem. Solutions such as reducing light pollution could quickly improve the resilience of coral reefs. Impact of Light Pollution on Coral Reefs Artificial light disrupts the natural behavior of coral reef fish, waking sleeping species and attracting predators, according to groundbreaking research using underwater infrared cameras. The study, published today (December 18) in Global Change Biology, involved an international team of scientists from the UK, France, French Polynesia, and Chile. It marks the first large-scale investigation into how light pollution affects the nocturnal dynamics of coral reef ecosystems. Emma Weschke deploying infrared cameras. Credit: Jules Schligler Behavioral Changes in Marine Life Dr. Emma Weschke, lead author from the University of Bristol’s School of Biological Sciences, explained: “When the sun sets, coral reefs undergo a dramatic transformation. The vibrant fish we see in the day retreat to sleep among the corals and elusive nocturnal species emerge from caves and cervices in pursuit of prey.” Senior author, Professor Andy Radford, also from Bristol, added: “The night usually brings a veil of darkness that allows marine life to hide from nocturnal predators. But artificial light generated by human activities exposes coral reef inhabitants to unexpected danger.” Still from video of reef at night exposed to artificial light. Credit: Emma Weschke Technological Advances in Research Using purpose-built underwater infrared night-vision cameras, the scientists could film the reef at night without interfering with fish behavior. This is because fish cannot see in infrared. A larger number of fish species were present on artificially illuminated reefs at night compared to control sites with no artificial light. Further investigation revealed these species were predatory fish—feeding on the zooplankton, small fish, and invertebrates. Dr. Weschke said: “Many of the species detected on artificially lit reefs were not nocturnal fish, but those that are only usually active during the day. Finding that light pollution can cause fish to stay awake later than usual is concerning because sleep—like for us—is likely essential for regenerating energy and maintaining fitness.” Professor Radford explained: “Artificial light makes it much easier for predators to locate and capture prey, reducing their foraging effort. Which is why we think that greater numbers are being attracted to artificially illuminated coral reefs at night.” Long-Term Effects and Solutions The changes observed in the nightlife on the reef were observed after an average of 25 consecutive nights exposure to artificial light. Only a few nights of exposure were not long enough to elicit any noticeable changes in fish communities compared to controls. “This is positive news as it suggests that there could be low-cost solutions that are quick to implement,” said co-author Professor Steve Simpson, also of Bristol’s School of Biological Sciences. “Reducing the impacts of artificial light could help build resilience on valuable coral reefs.” Dr. Weschke added: “Unlike greenhouse gasses and plastics, artificial light is a pollutant that doesn’t leave a residue when switched off. “Limiting artificial light in both its intensity and duration, prioritizing it for essential needs and reducing aesthetic use, will help reestablish naturally dark nights that marine ecosystems evolved with.” Reference: “Artificial Light Increases Nighttime Prevalence of Predatory Fishes, Altering Community Composition on Coral Reefs” by Emma Weschke, Jules Schligler, Isla Hely, Thibaut Roost, Jo-Ann Schies, Ben Williams, Bartosz Dworzanski, Suzanne C. Mills, Ricardo Beldade, Stephen D. Simpson and Andrew N. Radford, 18 December 2024, Global Change Biology. DOI: 10.1111/gcb.70002 The work was conducted by researchers from the University of Bristol, UK, Centre de Recherches Insulaires et Observatoire de l’Environnement (CRIOBE), French Polynesia and Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. Researchers at the University of Montana uncovered genetic traits that help highland mice maintain healthy pregnancies at high altitudes, hinting at evolutionary strategies against hypoxia-related complications and opening avenues for human medical advancements. Researchers found that highland deer mice have genetic adaptations that protect fetal growth in low-oxygen conditions. The findings could help develop treatments for pregnancy complications in humans. Pregnancy at elevated altitudes often leads to low birth weights and various complications. These issues are seen across a broad spectrum of mammals, from deer mice to humans. A study from the University of Montana has uncovered genetic factors that enable specific highland mouse communities to protect their developing fetuses in these higher terrains. The research was recently published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Evolutionary Adaptations to Hypoxia “Understanding how deer mice survive and thrive at high elevations not only informs our understanding of basic evolutionary processes, it may also one day provide clues for treating a range of related disorders in humans,” said Zac Cheviron, a UM researcher and biology associate professor. The work was led by Kate Wilsterman, a UM postdoctoral researcher who has since joined the faculty of Colorado State University. Cheviron, UM biology Professor Jeff Good, and former UM postdoctoral researcher Rena Schweizer were her chief collaborators in Montana. Researchers (left to right) Rena Schweizer, Zac Cheviron, and Jeff Good, shown here in a University of Montana lab, studied how deer mice protect developing fetuses at higher elevations. Credit: UM photo by Ridley Hudson Their research shows that fetal growth is adversely affected by decreased oxygen at high elevations in mice that are native to low elevations. Mice native to high elevations, however, have genetic differences that provide placental modifications that protect fetuses from hypoxia, which is a lack of oxygen to the fetus. This pattern is similar to that observed in humans, such as people of Tibetan or Andean ancestry. These human populations also protect fetal growth at high elevations, but researchers have little understanding of how it is achieved. Cheviron said one of the most exciting aspects of their work was the discovery that many genes that seem to target fetal growth in their study species – highland deer mice – also have been associated with placental physiology in people. Genetic Clues for Human Pregnancy Complications “This suggests that the genetic and physiological mechanisms that underlie healthy pregnancies at high elevation may have deep evolutionary roots,” he said. “We might be able to use this insight to develop new treatments to improve pregnancy outcomes in humans.” During the study, lowland mice experienced stunted fetal growth in hypoxia conditions, but highland mice avoided negative effects by altering their placentas. Potential Applications for Human Medicine “If we can understand how deer mice have ‘solved’ the problem of hypoxia for fetal growth,” Wilsterman said, “we may eventually be able to identify targets for treatment development in humans or be in a better position to identify where things are going wrong in gestational diseases that involve hypoxia.” She said future studies will examine the tissue-level changes they discovered among deer mice. They also hope to identify the genetic variants that contribute to how specific cell types respond to hypoxia. Schweizer, Kirksey Cunningham, Jeffrey M. Good and Zachary A. Cheviron, 12 June 2023, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. DOI: 10.1073/pnas.2218049120 Researchers have improved plant productivity and carbon sequestration by incorporating algae elements into tobacco plants, thus significantly enhancing photosynthesis and growth. Scientists modified Rubisco using red algae proteins, boosting photosynthesis and plant growth in tobacco. This innovation could improve agriculture and carbon sequestration efforts. Laura Gunn, an assistant professor from the School of Integrative Plant Science Plant Biology Section in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Cornell, and her colleagues have made a significant breakthrough in enhancing plant productivity and boosting carbon sequestration. They managed to integrate crucial parts of a highly efficient red algae into a tobacco plant, using bacteria as an intermediary. This study, which represents a significant step towards improved agricultural efficiency, was recently featured on the cover of Nature Plants. The study centers on Rubisco, the most abundant protein across every ecosystem on Earth. Rubisco performs the first step of photosynthesis by fixing carbon, and it appears in various forms in a wide array of organisms, including plants, red and green algae, and bacteria. Rubisco is slow and struggles to differentiate between oxygen and carbon dioxide, a problem Gunn and several other Cornellians are working on. As a result, Rubisco often limits plant growth and crop yield. Overcoming Challenges in Transplanting GmRubisco One species of red algae, Griffithsia monilis (Gm), contains Rubisco which is 30% more efficient at fixing carbon than Rubisco in other organisms, including terrestrial crops. For at least 20 years, scientists have been interested in transplanting the highly efficient GmRubisco into plants such as rice, wheat, soybean, and tobacco to increase their productivity; however, until now, no one has been able to successfully coax plants to express it. This is because Rubisco requires multiple “chaperones” that are essential for the protein to fold, assemble and be active – there are seven such helpers in tobacco plants – and most of the chaperones in red algae are unknown, Gunn said. In their study, Gunn and her co-authors were able to solve the 3D structure of GmRubisco and use this information to successfully graft a small number of regions from Rhodobacter sphaeroides (RsRubisco) into a bacterial Rubisco. “RsRubisco is not very efficient, but it is very closely related to GmRubisco – they’re like cousins – which means that, unlike land-plant Rubisco, it accepts the grafted sequences,” Gunn said. “RsRubisco also doesn’t need any special chaperones for it to fold and assemble in land plants.” Significant Improvements in Carbon Fixation Efficiency The change increased the carboxylation rate – the speed at which Rubisco starts the carbon fixation process – by 60%, increased carboxylation efficiency by 22%, and improved RsRubisco’s ability to distinguish between carbon dioxide and oxygen by 7%. The authors then transplanted their bacterial mutant into tobacco, where it doubled photosynthesis and plant growth, compared to tobacco grown with unaltered RsRubisco. Tobacco is the easiest land plant in which to manipulate Rubisco and so serves as the test case for developing a more efficient Rubisco that can be transferred to more agronomically relevant species, Gunn said. “We’re not at the point where we’re outperforming wild-type tobacco, but we’re on the right trajectory,” Gunn said. “We only need fairly modest improvements to Rubisco performance, because even a very small increase over a whole growing season can lead to massive changes in plant growth and yield, and the potential applications span many sectors: higher agricultural production; more efficient and affordable biofuel production; carbon sequestration approaches; and artificial energy possibilities.” Reference: “Grafting Rhodobacter sphaeroides with red algae Rubisco to accelerate catalysis and plant growth” by Yu Zhou, Laura H. Gunn, Rosemary Birch, Inger Andersson and Spencer M. Whitney, 8 June 2023, Nature Plants.
