Credit: SciTechDaily.com Prehistoric insects, with their delicate and soft bodies, are challenging to preserve as fossils. While wings are more commonly fossilized, the bodies of these insects are often fragmented or incomplete, posing difficulties for scientific study. Paleontologists often rely on trace fossils to learn about these ancient insects, which are almost exclusively found as traces on fossil plants. “We have a great fossil plant record,” said Richard J. Knecht, a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology at Harvard. “Further back in time, it’s the trace fossils that tell us more about the evolution and behavior of insects than the body fossils because plants and the trace fossils on them preserve very well. And the trace, as opposed to a body, won’t move over time and is always found where it was made.” (A) Major fossil evidence for insects and plant-insect associations are presented with labeled points, with special reference to holometabolous insect orders (Diptera, Hymenoptera, Lepidoptera, and Coleoptera) and foliar endophytic damage. Genomic estimates of the origin of the major leaf mining orders are given in pink (Coleoptera), orange (Hymenoptera), and blue (Lepidoptera). (B) Fossil pinnule mines on Macroneuropteris scheuchzeri. The 312-million-year-old Carboniferous fossil provides evidence of how internal feeding, known as leaf mining, may have originated and shows the age of this behavior was occurring approximately 70 million years earlier than believed. “Of all of the ways that insects feed internally within plants—the mining of the insides of leaves, the tumor-like galls in which an insect takes control of the developmental machinery of a plant, the borings and galleries of insects in wood, and myriad ways that insects invade seeds to consume nutritious embryonic tissues—it is mining that has been the most mysterious,” said co-author, Conrad C. Labandeira, Senior Research Geologist and Curator of Fossil Arthropods at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History. “The earliest mines are recorded from the Early Triassic, soon after the great end-Permian extinction, and yet galls, borings, and seed predation extend considerably earlier into the Paleozoic. Why the delay in mining? I think we now have an answer!” Backscatter and Energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS) results of SEM analysis using a JEOL 7900F SEM. Knecht and Anshuman Swain The Process and Importance of Internal Feeding Internal feeding on plants is common among holometabolous insects – insects that undergo a full metamorphosis: Lepidoptera (moths), Coleoptera (beetles), Diptera (flies), and Hymenopterans (wasps and sawflies). A larva bores into the leaf and begins to feed on the internal tissues of the leaf, leaving a trail behind. As the larva tunnels within the leaf, it is also growing, going through different stages of molting and even leaving behind its droppings, known as frass. “Frass is one of the things we look for when we’re identifying internal feeding. Frass can even have different traits that are useful when it comes to defining what animal is making it,” Knecht said. The larva will continue to make a trail within the leaf until it pupates, hatches, cuts itself out of the leaf, and flies away. Knecht Exceptional Preservation in the Rhode Island Formation The trace fossil was found in the Carboniferous Rhode Island Formation. The Rhode Island Formation was originally a swampy, water-logged environment which provided an anoxic setting that preserved plant fossils very well; what paleontologists call a Lagerstätte, a site that produces extraordinary fossils with exceptional preservation. “One thing that doesn’t fossilize is larvae,” said Knecht. “They are too delicate and small. So seeing something like this is really insightful because it tells us about larval behavior at a specific time, the late Paleozoic, in which we know very little about larvae.” The exceptional preservation allowed the researchers to clearly see the endophytic trace which follows patterns paleontologists look for when defining this behavior, For example a meandering trail, the larva will avoid the leaf’s edges and major veins. This behavior is only known to be performed by holometabolous insects, including animals existing today. “This finding pushes this behavior back by 70 million years,” said Knecht. “It’s showing us two things, one the behavior of larvae, something we don’t see in the fossil record because larvae typically don’t preserve. And two, that the evolution of full metamorphosis, holometabolism, existed at this time.” The fossil is housed in the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Harvard among other fossils Knecht is also studying. Labandeira, 5 October 2023, New Phytologist. DOI: 10.1111/nph.19266 Insects face challenges coping with the elevated temperatures induced by climate change, potentially leading to a risk of overheating. Insects Struggle with Rising Temperatures Insects have difficulties handling the higher temperatures brought on by climate change, and might risk overheating. The ability to reproduce is also strongly affected by rising temperatures, even in northern areas of the world, according to a new study from Lund University in Sweden. Insects cannot regulate their own body temperature, which is instead strongly influenced by the temperature in their immediate environment. In the current study, the researchers studied two closely related species of damselflies in Sweden. The goal was to understand their robustness and ability to tolerate changes in temperature. To study this, the researchers used a combination of field work in southern Sweden and infrared camera technology (thermography), a technology that makes it possible to measure body temperature in natural conditions. This information was then connected to the survival rates and reproductive success of the damselflies in their natural populations. Survival vs. Reproduction The results show that survivorship of these damselflies was high at relatively low temperatures, 15 – 20 C ° (59 – 68 F °). The reproductive capacity, on the other hand, was higher at temperatures between 20 and 30 C ° (68 – 86 F °), depending on the species. “There is therefore a temperature-dependent conflict between survival on one hand and the ability to reproduce on the other,” says Erik Svensson, professor at the Department of Biology at Lund University, who led the study. The study also shows that the damselflies ability to handle heat-related stress is limited. Insects are cold-blooded invertebrates, so they rely on external sources such as the sun or hot stones to raise their body temperature. “Our results show that cold-blooded animals can suffer from overheating even if they live far up in the northern hemisphere, and that their ability to buffer their body temperature against rising external temperatures is limited. The results also challenge a popular theory that animals’ plasticity, i. e. their individual flexibility, can help them survive under harsher environmental conditions, such as during heat waves,” says Erik Svensson. Waller, 24 November 2020, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. DOI: 10.1073/pnas.2012454117 The extreme steps these microorganisms would take to punish cheater species surprised the researchers. A Study Reveals That Bacteria Can Behave “Spitefully” Annoyed by freeloaders? You are not alone, and taking advantage of others is an issue that affects all species, not just humans. In fact, such selfish behavior is not uncommon in the animal realm, where even cheater species of bacteria display it. An even more intriguing fact was revealed by a York University-led study team that investigated bacteria’s quorum-sensing trait, a complex type of cooperation that allows bacteria to regulate gene expression based on population density. Researchers from Case Western Reserve University and York University collaborated on the research, which was recently published in the journal PLOS Computational Biology. They were astonished to learn that bacterial colonies can go to the point of harming themselves in order to get rid of freeloaders. Enforcing Fairness Through Quorum Sensing “We didn’t expect to see this behavior, which you might even call ‘spiteful’,” says Associate Professor Andrew Eckford of York U’s Lassonde School of Engineering, and the study’s senior author. “But it indicates that quorum sensing is a remarkably flexible tool for enforcing fairness.” In the study, scientists investigated how quorum sensing regulates the supply of shared resources, such as the enzymes that convert food sources into helpful nutrients. When freeloaders steal nutrients without creating enzymes, they discovered that the cheaters can be penalized even if the whole community suffers – similar to canceling a feast when an unwanted visitor sneaks in. Additionally, quorum sensing may starve the whole community if freeloading is widespread and no other food is available. “It’s costly for a bacterium to contribute to the community, so for a selfish individual, it’s best to simply take what’s offered without giving anything back,” explains lead author Alex Moffett, who was a York U postdoctoral fellow at the time of the study. “But obviously this is bad for everyone, so the community needs a way to discourage bad behavior.” Mathematical Modeling of Quorum Sensing Moffett and his colleagues found that instead of relying on the honor system, these microorganisms used quorum sensing to suppress the freeloaders. To further understand how quorum sensing compares to other strategies for controlling the production of public goods, they used mathematical modeling. “Our model captures both how likely ‘cheater’ strains – which do not produce public goods but benefit from them – are to take over a population and how long on average the population will last before going extinct,” says co-author Peter J Thomas, professor of mathematics, applied mathematics and statistics at Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio. As quorum sensing plays an important role in bacterial infections such as the lung infections that affect sufferers of cystic fibrosis, the research team hopes to apply the results of this study to understand and disrupt such diseases. “This will help us understand how bacteria can colonize the lungs so effectively, which might point the way to new treatments,” adds Moffett.
