Stylophora pistillata, a common stony coral in the Indo-Pacific. Credit: Kevin Wyman/Rutgers University Scientists’ findings suggest corals will withstand climate change. Charles Darwin, the British naturalist who championed the theory of evolution, noted that corals form far-reaching structures, largely made of limestone, that surround tropical islands. He didn’t know how they performed this feat. Now, Rutgers scientists have shown that coral structures consist of a biomineral containing a highly organized organic mix of proteins that resembles what is in our bones. Their study, published in the Journal of the Royal Society Interface, shows for the first time that several proteins are organized spatially – a process that’s critical to forming a rock-hard coral skeleton. “Our research revealed an intricate network of skeletal proteins that interact spatially, which likely applies to all stony corals,” said Manjula P. Mummadisetti, who led the research while she was a postdoctoral associate in the Rutgers Environmental Biophysics and Molecular Ecology Laboratory led by senior author Paul G. Falkowski. She is now a senior scientist at AVMBioMed in Pottstown, Pennsylvania. “It’s important to understand the mechanisms of coral biomineralization and how these invaluable animals persist during the era of anthropogenic climate change.” “Our findings suggest that corals will withstand climate change caused by human activities, based on the precision, robustness, and resilience of their impressive process for forming rock-hard skeletons,” said Falkowski, a Distinguished Professor in the School of Arts and Sciences and School of Environmental and Biological Sciences at Rutgers University–New Brunswick. Coral reefs protect shorelines threatened by erosion and storms, and provide fish habitat, nursery and spawning grounds. Indeed, coral reefs provide food for about a half-billion people, who also depend on them to make a living. However, warming ocean waters from climate change put corals at risk from deadly bleaching and disease. More acidic ocean waters, sea-level rise, unsustainable fishing, vessels that damage reefs, invasive species, marine debris and tropical cyclones pose additional threats, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Rutgers scientists studied the spatial interactions of the proteins embedded within the skeleton of Stylophora pistillata, a common stony coral in the Indo-Pacific. Stony corals have evolved over more than 400 million years, forming enormous reefs in shallow subtropical and tropical seas. They’ve been called the “rainforests of the sea.” Predicting the survival of corals based on how they adapted to global climate change over millions of years requires understanding, among other things, how they build reefs by secreting calcium carbonate. That process is called biomineralization. The scientists showed that several proteins work together to create optimal conditions for biomineralization. These proteins are not located randomly but are well-organized spatially, which the scientists detailed for the first time. The scientists revealed the spatial patterns as new mineral is formed between the living tissue of the animal and its base or an older skeleton. A new study by UC San Diego researchers reveals unique inhibitory neurons in the human forebrain, offering insights that may improve models of brain function and disease, and showing that certain neurons share common lineages, a discovery with significant implications for understanding brain diseases. Researchers unveil new insights into human forebrain development A team of scientists from the University of California San Diego School of Medicine conducted a study that provides a new understanding of how the human forebrain develops. The study, led by Changuk Chung, Ph.D., and Xiaoxu Yang, Ph.D., both from the laboratory of Joseph G. Gleeson, M.D., Department of Neurosciences at the School of Medicine and the Rady Children’s Institute for Genomic Medicine, provide a greater understanding of how the human brain develops at the cellular level. The study also presents evidence for the existence of the source of inhibitory neurons (dInNs) in the human brain that differ from origins in other species like mice, a common lab animal used in brain studies. The group outlined their findings in a paper recently published in the journal Nature. Functionality and Importance of the Forebrain The forebrain, or cerebral cortex, is the largest part of the brain, important for a wide range of functions, ranging from cognitive thought, vision, attention, and memory. Neurons are cells that serve as the individual circuits of the brain. Inhibitory neurons usually function as a kind of neural “off” switch, as opposed to the “on” switch of excitatory neurons. “Humans have a very large and wrinkled cortex that likely supports higher cognitive functions compared with other species, such as rodents,” Gleeson explained. A trio of researchers (from left) Xiaoxu Yang, Changuk Chung and Joseph G. Gleeson led a study that advanced the understanding of the structure of the human brain on the cellular level. All three are associated with the University of California San Diego School of Medicine Department of Neurosciences and the Rady Children’s Institute for Genomic Medicine. Credit: UC San Diego Health Sciences He said that the inhibitory neurons in mice have an origin from deep within the developing brain. The current study puts that model to the test by assessing cellular lineage. They found the existence of dInNs, which are absent in mice. He said finding evidence for this specific type of neuron in humans opens the door to greater understanding how the human brain is special. “We expect dInNs to support new, more accurate, models of human brains,” Gleeson said. “This updated brain model may help explain the origins of certain conditions like epilepsy, schizophrenia or autism.” Cellular Lineage and Brain Structure The group was especially interested in following the lineage trail of mosaic variants of brain cells. “If two cells share the same mother cell, we say they have the same lineage,” Chung said. “If two individual cells have a same mosaic variant, they were born from a common mother cell that passed it to all of its daughters,” Yang explained. “So, mosaic variants in cells function like family names in people.” The researchers directly accessed brains from two neurotypical donors who died from natural causes. They used mosaic variants to trace where these cells came from, to identify sister cells born in the same brain region, and to determine how far each “family name” spread across the brain. They revealed that some inhibitory and excitatory neurons essentially have the same family name, which Chung said means the two types of neurons share lineage. The two types likely branched in a late moment of embryonic cerebral development, he added, noting that such a cellular relationship is not present in other species. “We hope our paper helps other researchers generate better models of neurological disease, and which types of brain diseases can result from impaired development,” Gleeson concluded. A dead bat at a wind farm. Credit: Fiona Mathews Common pipistrelle bats show more activity around wind turbines, potentially explaining their high fatality rates at such sites. One of the most abundant bats in Europe may be attracted to wind turbines, a new study shows. The activity of common pipistrelle bats was monitored at 23 British wind farms and similar “control” locations close by without turbines. A dead pipistrelle at a wind farm. Credit: Fiona Mathews Activity was around a third higher at turbines than at control locations, and two thirds of occasions with high activity were recorded at turbines rather than the controls. The reasons for this are not clear. Possibilities include attraction to the turbines themselves, or the presence of more of the bats’ insect prey around turbines. “Either way it means the risk of fatality at wind turbines is increased, and probably explains the high fatalities of common pipistrelle bats seen at some wind farms across Europe,” said Dr. Suzanne Richardson. Common pipistrelle bats account for more than half of all bat fatalities at turbine sites in Europe. Predictive Challenges and Solutions “We know bats are killed by turbines worldwide, and reducing these fatalities is essential to ensuring a global increase in wind energy with minimal impact on bats,” said Professor David Hosken, of the University of Exeter. “To do that, we need to understand whether bats are actively attracted to, indifferent to, or repelled by, the turbines at large wind-energy installations. “Our findings help explain why Environmental Impact Assessments conducted before the installation of turbines are poor predictors of actual fatality rates. “Turbines are generally built in areas where bat activity is thought to be low, but this may not be an effective strategy if bats are attracted once turbines are built. Search dog Breeze. Dogs are used to locate dead bats at wind farms. Credit: Katharine Evans “Ongoing monitoring is required, and measures such as minimizing blade rotation in periods of high collision risk are likely to be the most effective way to reduce fatalities.” The study also monitored soprano pipistrelle bats, finding no conclusive evidence that this species is more active around turbines. Professor Fiona Mathews of the University of Sussex, who led the research, said: “Bat activity at wind farms is very variable. “During periods of high wind speed, when most energy is generated, bat activity is low and so there is little risk to bats. “In contrast, there can be high activity at turbines on nights with light winds and warm temperatures. “Most of the attraction to turbines appears to be happening on these high activity nights. Reducing Harm Without Sacrificing Energy “We have worked with the Statutory Nature Conservation Organisations and industry to produce guidance to help minimize the risks to bats. “These include stopping blades rotating when no energy is being produced (‘idling’). This is a win-win situation as little electricity generation is lost during these periods.” Reference: “Peaks in bat activity at turbines and the implications for mitigating the impact of wind energy developments on bats” by Suzanne M.
