農田何其甜，

土壤何其香；

最宜雙手親，

更加雙足嚐 。

我願為農夫，

躬親自耕種；

終日與為伍，

始春以迄冬。

我願為公雞，

滌羽泥土裡；

四方去鼓翼，

我願為旅人，

跣足赤背遊；

The Sweet Earth

How pleasant is the soil!

How pleasing, the farmland!

When you fondle it

with bare foot,

and handle it

with paired hands.

It’s warm, soft,

cool and moist:

Charmingly warm,

soothingly soft,

cheerfully cool,

delightfully moist.

It’s fragrant, colorful,

infinite and beautiful:

Fancily fragrant,

classically colorful,

immeasurably infinite,

bewilderingly beautiful!

I’d like to be a farmer,

so I can plow and sow:

All day long handle the soil

with fingers and palms,

all season round fondle the land

with my soles and toes.

I’d like to be a rooster,

so I can play and crow:

Play in the dirt

with full crown and plume;

flap around the earth,

crow my cock-a-doodle-doos.

I’d like to be a rover,

so I can roam and float:

Roam in the world

with bare back and foot;

float in the universe --

cry my Hiii’s! and Hooo’s!
