What is love?

How I want love!

May I have a chance,

so I can love?

His itch

will be my itch.

His ache

will be my ache.

His love

I too will love.

His hatred

I too will hate.

If he is sad,

I’ll be sorry.

If he is glad,

I’ll be happy.

If he fails,

I am at fault.

If he succeeds,

it’s my success.

Even his happiness

comes from my distress,

yet I’m willing to suffer—

I’m willing to be oppressed!

Even his success

comes from my sacrifice,

I’m willing to offer--

I’m willing even to die!

If only he gives me a glance,

I’ll swoon as in a trance.

If only he gives me a nod,

I’ll tremble as in shock.

I’m willing to live in fetters

if he fetters me with a letter.

I’ll serve him as a prince

if he confers on me his grace.

All year I’ll be gleeful,

if he favors me an embrace.

All my life I’ll be grateful,

if he favors me also a kiss.

I don’t care who has

loved him before.

I only hope that I may
