A study reveals that birds in small flocks use aerodynamic interactions to maintain formation effortlessly, whereas larger groups face disruptions. This research could influence transportation and energy sectors, and introduces “flonons,” a new concept linking flock behavior to material physics. These findings could be useful in the fields of transportation and energy. As you gaze into the sky in the early weeks of spring, you might spot a flock of birds gliding north in perfect harmony. But how do these creatures fly in such a coordinated and seemingly effortless fashion? Part of the answer lies in precise, and previously unknown, aerodynamic interactions, reports a team of mathematicians in a newly published study. Its breakthrough broadens our understanding of wildlife, including fish, who move in schools, and could have applications in transportation and energy. “This area of research is important since animals are known to take advantage of the flows, such as of air or water, left by other members of a group to save on the energy needed to move or to reduce drag or resistance,” explains Leif Ristroph, an associate professor at New York University’s Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences and the senior author of the paper, which appears in the journal Nature Communications. “Our work may also have applications in transportation—like efficient propulsion through air or water—and energy, such as more effectively harvesting power from wind, water currents, or waves.” Aerodynamic Effects on Flock Formation The team’s results show that the impact of aerodynamics depends on the size of the flying group—benefiting small groups and disrupting large ones. “The aerodynamic interactions in small bird flocks help each member to hold a certain special position relative to their leading neighbor, but larger groups are disrupted by an effect that dislodges members from these positions and may cause collisions,” notes Sophie Ramananarivo, an assistant professor at École Polytechnique Paris and one of the paper’s authors. Previously, Ristroph and his colleagues uncovered how birds move in groups—but these findings were drawn from experiments mimicking the interactions of two birds. The new Nature Communications research expanded the inquiry to account for many flyers. To replicate the columnar formations of birds, in which they line up one directly behind the other, the researchers created mechanized flappers that act like birds’ wings. The wings were 3D-printed from plastic and driven by motors to flap in water, which replicated how air flows around bird wings during flight. This “mock flock” propelled through water and could freely arrange itself within a line or queue, as seen in a video of the experiment. A live recording of the experimental apparatus in operation. Five foils are driven to flap up and down in unison, and they freely and interactively propel around a water tank. Credit: Courtesy of NYU’s Applied Mathematics Laboratory at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences. The flows affected group organization in different ways—depending on the size of the group. For small groups of up to about four flyers, the researchers discovered an effect by which each member gets help from the aerodynamic interactions in holding its position relative to its neighbors. “If a flyer is displaced from its position, the vortices or swirls of flow left by the leading neighbor help to push the follower back into place and hold it there,” explains Ristroph, director of NYU’s Applied Mathematics Laboratory, where the experiments were conducted. “This means the flyers can assemble into an orderly queue of regular spacing automatically and with no extra effort, since the physics does all the work. “For larger groups, however, these flow interactions cause later members to be jostled around and thrown out of position, typically causing a breakdown of the flock due to collisions among members. This means that the very long groups seen in some types of birds are not at all easy to form, and the later members likely have to constantly work to hold their positions and avoid crashing into their neighbors.” Mathematical Insights into Flock Dynamics The authors then deployed mathematical modeling to better understand the underlying forces driving the experimental results. Here, they concluded that flow-mediated interactions between neighbors are, in effect, spring-like forces that hold each member in place—just as if the cars of a train were connected by springs. However, these “springs” act in only one direction—a lead bird can exert force on its follower, but not vice versa—and this non-reciprocal interaction means that later members tend to resonate or oscillate wildly. “The oscillations look like waves that jiggle the members forward and backward and which travel down the group and increase in intensity, causing later members to crash together,” explains Joel Newbolt, who was an NYU graduate student in physics at the time of research. The team named these new types of waves “flonons,” which is based on the similar concept of phonons that refer to vibrational waves in systems of masses linked by springs and which are used to model the motions of atoms or molecules in crystals or other materials. “Our findings therefore raise some interesting connections to material physics in which birds in an orderly flock are analogous to atoms in a regular crystal,” Newbolt adds. Advanced genetic analysis tools unveil a surprising degree of variation in virus-derived genetic sequences among individuals. Unexpected Diversity in Virus-Derived Sequences in the Human Genome Powerful genetic analysis tools reveal that people exhibit a surprising level of variation in virus-derived genetic sequences. Three RIKEN geneticists have discovered previously undetected snippets of genetic material from viruses lurking in our DNA. The methods they developed for this discovery will be valuable for determining when this viral genetic material entered the human genome and also whether it can give rise to differences between individuals. RIKEN researchers have discovered new heritable structural variants derived from HHV6 in human genomes. Credit: © Callista Images/Cultura/Science Photo Library Roughly 8% of the human genome can be traced backed to retroviruses—viruses that reverse the normal order of genetic transcription, having an RNA genome that is reverse-transcribed into DNA and then inserted into the genome of the host cell. The most infamous retrovirus is the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). While retroviruses can have devastating effects on human health, the viral genetic material inserted in our genomes can provide useful functions. For example, retroviral proteins expressed in the placenta enable humans and other mammals to give birth to live offspring rather than eggs. “During the course of human evolution our ancestors acquired many virus-derived sequences, some of which impart useful functions,” says Shohei Kojima of the RIKEN Center for Integrative Medical Sciences (IMS). “I used to think that viruses were menaces, but some of their genetic sequences are essential for human development.” Over the last two decades, researchers have discovered much about the retroviral genetic sequences in the human genome, as well as viral-origin sequences derived from non-retroviruses. But it is unclear how much these sequences vary between people and whether variants could give rise to different human characteristics. Shohei Kojima and two RIKEN co-workers have discovered a surprisingly high level of variation between people in human endogenous viruses. Credit: © 2021 RIKEN Now, Kojima, Anselmo Kamada and Nicholas Parrish, all at RIKEN IMS, have investigated virus-derived variations in 3,332 people from diverse populations using bioinformatic tools specially designed for the task. They discovered that viruses are responsible for unexpected structural variations in the human genome. They also found rare variants in the germline that can be traced back to human herpesvirus 6 (Figure 1). Not all the viral genetic material they found had ancient origins, however. The trio discovered that some commonly used cell lines had been infected by viruses. “We think these sequences are likely caused by infection of the subject who donated their blood for human genetics research,” says Parrish. “Strangely, the viruses don’t usually infect B cells, which were used to make the cell lines we used, and so we don’t fully understand how those viruses infected the cells.” The team intends to explore the possible functions of the sequences they have identified. Some studies have suggested associations between viral genetic sequences and a higher risk of certain diseases, Parrish notes. “If that’s true, how and why are they maintained in the human population?” he asks. “We want to see if they provide some benefit in addition to the cost.” Reference: “Virus-derived variation in diverse human genomes” by Shohei Kojima, Anselmo Jiro Kamada and Nicholas F. Credit: Tania Jogesh Study of Flowers With Two Types of Anthers Solves Mystery That Baffled Darwin Some flowers use a clever strategy to ensure effective pollination by bees, doling out pollen gradually from two different sets of anthers. Most flowering plants depend on pollinators such as bees to transfer pollen from the male anthers of one flower to the female stigma of another flower, enabling fertilization and the production of fruits and seeds. Bee pollination, however, involves an inherent conflict of interest, because bees are only interested in pollen as a food source. “The bee and the plant have different goals, so plants have evolved ways to optimize the behavior of bees to maximize the transfer of pollen between flowers,” explained Kathleen Kay, associate professor of ecology and evolutionary biology at UC Santa Cruz. Close-up photos of Clarkia unguiculata and Clarkia cylindrica flowers show the two types of anthers, a conspicuous inner whorl and an outer whorl that blends in with the petals. Credit: Kay et al., PRSB 2020 In a study published December 23 in Proceedings of the Royal Society B, Kay’s team described a pollination strategy involving flowers with two distinct sets of anthers that differ in color, size, and position. Darwin was mystified by such flowers, lamenting in a letter that he had “wasted enormous effort over them, and cannot yet get a glimpse of the meaning of the parts.” For years, the only explanation put forth for this phenomenon, called heteranthery, was that one set of anthers is specialized for attracting and feeding bees, while a less conspicuous set of anthers surreptitiously dusts them with pollen for transfer to another flower. This “division of labor” hypothesis has been tested in various species, and although it does seem to apply in a few cases, many studies have failed to confirm it. A New Theory: Pollen Dosing Over Time The new study proposes a different explanation and shows how it works in species of wildflowers in the genus Clarkia. Through a variety of greenhouse and field experiments, Kay’s team showed that heteranthery in Clarkia is a way for flowers to gradually present their pollen to bees over multiple visits. “What’s happening is the anthers open at different times, so the plant is doling out pollen to the bees gradually,” Kay said. This “pollen dosing” strategy is a way of getting the bees to move on to another flower without stopping to groom the pollen off their bodies and pack it away for delivery to their nest. Bees are highly specialized for pollen feeding, with hairs on their bodies that attract pollen electrostatically, stiff hairs on their legs for grooming, and structures for storing pollen on their legs or bodies. Bee Behavior and Floral Strategy “If a flower doses a bee with a ton of pollen, the bee is in pollen heaven and it will start grooming and then go off to feed its offspring without visiting another flower,” Kay said. “So plants have different mechanisms for doling out pollen gradually. In this case, the flower is hiding some anthers and gradually revealing them to pollinators, and that limits how much pollen a bee can remove in each visit.” There are about 41 species of Clarkia in California, and about half of them have two types of anthers. These tend to be pollinated by specialized species of native solitary bees. Kay’s team focused on bee pollination in two species of Clarkia, C. unguiculata (elegant clarkia) and C. cylindrica (speckled clarkia). A Step-by-Step Bloom: Inner and Outer Anthers In these and other heterantherous clarkias, an inner whorl of anthers stands erect in the center of the flower, is visually conspicuous, and matures early, releasing its pollen first. An inconspicuous outer whorl lies back against the petals until after the inner anthers have opened. The outer anthers then move toward the center of the flower and begin to release their pollen gradually. A few days later, the stigma becomes erect and sticky, ready to receive pollen from another flower. “In the field, you can see flowers in different stages, and using time-lapse photography we could see the whole sequence of events in individual flowers,” Kay said. The division of labor hypothesis requires both sets of anthers to be producing pollen at the same time. Kay said she decided to investigate heteranthery after observing clarkia flowers at a field site and realizing that explanation didn’t fit. “I could see some flowers where one set was active, and some where the other set was active, but no flowers where both were active at the same time,” she said. In C. cylindrica, the two sets of anthers produce pollen with different colors, which enabled the researchers to track where it was going. Their experiments showed that pollen from both sets of anthers was collected for food and was also being transferred between flowers, contradicting the division of labor hypothesis. “The color difference was convenient, because otherwise it’s very hard to track pollen,” Kay said. “We showed that bees are collecting and transporting pollen from both kinds of anthers, so they are not specialized for different functions.” Kay said she didn’t realize how much time Darwin had spent puzzling over heteranthery until she started studying it herself. “He figured out so many things, it’s hard to find a case where he didn’t figure it out,” she said. Darwin might have been on the right track, though. Shortly before his death, he requested seeds of C. unguiculata to use in experiments.
