After a 1988 algal bloom decimated snails in Sweden’s Koster archipelago, researchers reintroduced Crab snails and observed fast evolutionary adaptations. (Swedish L. saxatilis marine snails.) Credit: Daria Shipilina The Koster archipelago’s snail populations, affected by a toxic algae bloom, became the focus of a decades-long study revealing how rapid evolutionary changes can occur when driven by genetic diversity and environmental pressures. In 1988, the Koster archipelago, a cluster of islands off Sweden’s west coast near Norway, was struck by a particularly dense bloom of toxic algae, decimating the marine snail populations. One might wonder why the fate of snails on a tiny, three-square-meter rock in the open sea would matter. Yet, this event would create a unique opportunity to predict and witness evolution unfolding before our eyes. Previously, the islands and their small intertidal skerries—rocky islets—harbored dense and diverse populations of the marine snail species Littorina saxatilis. Although the snail populations on the larger islands—some of which were reduced to less than 1%—rebounded within two to four years, several skerries struggled to recover from the devastation. Crab-ecotype snails (1992) evolved to strikingly resemble the lost Wave-ecotype snails on a skerry. Credit: ISTA, images by Kerstin Johannesson A Groundbreaking Experiment Begins Marine ecologist Kerstin Johannesson from the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, saw a unique opportunity. In 1992, she re-introduced L. saxatilis snails to their lost skerry habitat—starting an experiment that would have far-reaching implications more than 30 years later. It allowed an international collaboration led by researchers from the Institute of Science and Technology Austria (ISTA), Nord University, Norway, the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, and The University of Sheffield, UK, to predict and witness evolution in the making. L. saxatilis is a common species of marine snails found throughout the North Atlantic shores, where different populations evolved traits adapted to their environments. These traits include size, shell shape, shell color, and behavior. The differences among these traits are particularly striking between the so-called Crab- and Wave-ecotype. These snails have evolved repeatedly in different locations, either in environments exposed to crab predation or on wave-exposed rocks away from crabs. Wave snails are typically small, and have a thin shell with specific colors and patterns, a large and rounded aperture, and bold behavior. Crab snails, on the other hand, are strikingly larger, have thicker shells without patterns, and a smaller and more elongated aperture. Crab snails also behave more warily in their predator-dominated environment. The Crab ecotype (left) is larger and wary of predators. The Wave ecotype (right) is smaller and has bold behavior. Credit: David Carmelet The Swedish Koster archipelago is home to these two different L. saxatilis snail types, often neighboring one another on the same island or only separated by a few hundred meters across the sea. Before the toxic algal bloom of 1988, Wave snails inhabited the skerries, while nearby shores were home to both Crab and Wave snails. This close spatial proximity would prove crucial. Crab-ecotype L. saxatilis snails were brought here in 1992 after toxic algae wiped out the original Wave-ecotype population. Credit: Kerstin Johannesson Rediscovering Evolutionary Traits Seeing that the Wave snail population of the skerries was entirely wiped out due to the toxic algae, Johannesson decided in 1992 to reintroduce snails to one of these skerries, but of the Crab-ecotype. With one to two generations each year, she rightfully expected the Crab snails to adapt to their new environment before scientists’ eyes. “Our colleagues saw evidence of the snails’ adaptation already within the first decade of the experiment,” says Diego Garcia Castillo, a graduate student in the Barton Group at ISTA and one of the authors leading the study. “Over the experiment’s 30 years, we were able to predict robustly what the snails will look like and which genetic regions will be implicated. The transformation was both rapid and dramatic,” he adds. The donor shore of the transplanted snail population (foreground) and the experimental skerry (little dot in the sea to the right). Credit: Kerstin Johannesson However, the snails did not evolve these traits entirely from scratch. Co-corresponding author Anja Marie Westram, a former postdoc at ISTA and currently a researcher at Nord University, explains, “Some of the genetic diversity was already available in the starting Crab population but at low prevalence. This is because the species had experienced similar conditions in the recent past. The snails’ access to a large gene pool drove this rapid evolution.” Johannesson is a marine ecologist at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden. Credit: Bo Johannesson Genetic Diversity and Evolutionary Change The team examined three aspects over the years of the experiment: the snails’ phenotype, individual gene variabilities, and larger genetic changes affecting entire regions of the chromosomes called “chromosomal inversions.” In the first few generations, the researchers witnessed an interesting phenomenon called “phenotypic plasticity”: Very soon after their transplantation, the snails modified their shape to adjust to their new environment. But the population also quickly started to change genetically. The researchers could predict the extent and direction of the genetic changes, especially for the chromosomal inversions. They showed that the snails’ rapid and dramatic transformation was possibly due to two complementary processes: A fast selection of traits already present at a low frequency in the transplanted Crab snail population and gene flow from neighboring Wave snails that could have simply rafted over 160 meters to reach the skerry. First author Diego Garcia Castillo, graduate student at ISTA, visiting the experimental skerry. Credit: Pierre Barry Evolution in the Face of Environmental Pressures In theory, scientists know that a species with high enough genetic variation can adapt more rapidly to change. However, few studies aimed to experiment with evolution over time in the wild. “This work allows us to have a closer look at repeated evolution and predict how a population could develop traits that have evolved separately in the past under similar conditions,” says Garcia Castillo. The team now wants to learn how species can adapt to modern environmental challenges such as pollution and climate change. “Not all species have access to large gene pools and evolving new traits from scratch is tediously slow. Adaptation is very complex and our planet is also facing complex changes with episodes of weather extremes, rapidly advancing climate change, pollution, and new parasites,” says Westram. She hopes this work will drive further research on maintaining species with large and diverse genetic makeups. “Perhaps this research helps convince people to protect a range of natural habitats so that species do not lose their genetic variation,” Westram concludes. Now, the snails Johannesson brought to the skerry in 1992 have reached a thriving population of around 1,000 individuals. Credit: Sanford Underground Research Facility A former goldmine serves as a gateway to explore microbial life deep within the Earth’s crust. If you totaled the mass of all microbes dwelling beneath the Earth’s surface, their combined biomass would surpass that of all life in our oceans. However, due to the challenge of accessing these depths, this teeming underground life remains largely unexplored and poorly understood. Utilizing a repurposed goldmine in South Dakota’s Black Hills as a laboratory, researchers from Northwestern University have crafted the most comprehensive map yet of these elusive and unusual microbes beneath our feet. In total, the researchers characterized nearly 600 microbial genomes — some of which are new to science. Out of this batch, Northwestern geoscientist Magdalena Osburn, who led the study, says most microbes fit into one of two categories: “minimalists,” which have streamlined their lives by eating the same thing all day, every day; and “maximalists,” which are ready and prepared to greedily grab any resource that might come their way. The study was recently published in the journal Environmental Microbiology. An exterior view of the former goldmine, which is now the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Credit: Sanford Underground Research Facility Not only does the new study expand our knowledge of the microbes living deep within the subsurface, it also hints at potential life we someday might find on Mars. Because the microbes live on resources found within rocks and water that are physically separate from the surface, these organisms also potentially could survive buried within Mars’ dusty red depths. “The deep subsurface biosphere is enormous; it’s just a vast amount of space,” said Osburn, an associate professor of Earth and planetary science at Northwestern’s Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences. “We used the mine as a conduit to access that biosphere, which is difficult to reach no matter how you approach it. The power of our study is that we ended up with a lot of genomes, and many from understudied groups. From that DNA, we can understand which organisms live underground and learn what they could be doing. These are organisms that we often can’t grow in the lab or study in more traditional contexts. They are often called ‘microbial dark matter’ because we know so little about them.” A portal into the Earth’s crust For the past 10 years, Osburn and her students have regularly visited the former Homestake Mine in Lead, South Dakota, to collect geochemical and microbial samples. Now called the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF), the deep underground laboratory hosts a number of research experiments across a range of disciplines. In 2015, Osburn established six experimental sites, collectively called the Deep Mine Microbial Observatory, throughout SURF. “The mine is now a facility dedicated to underground science,” Osburn said. “Researchers mostly perform high-energy particle physics experiments. But they also let us study the deep biospheres that live within the rocks. We can set up experiments in a controlled, dedicated site and check on them months later, which we would not be able to do in an active mine.” By boring holes into rocks inside the mine, Osburn and her team capture fracture fluids, composed of water and dissolved gases. Some of these fluids are up to 10,000 years old and are teeming with microbial life that is otherwise isolated and ignored. In the new study, Osburn and her team collected eight fluid samples, gathered at various points throughout the mine — spanning depths from the surface all the way to about 1.5 kilometers deep. The range of samples provides a window into a gradient of microbial life with depth. Minimalists v. maximalists Back in Osburn’s lab at Northwestern, she and her team sequenced the microbial DNA held within the samples. Of the nearly 600 genomes characterized, microbes represented 50 distinct phyla and 18 candidate phyla. Out of this diverse community of microbes, Osburn discovered that, at some point, each lineage gravitates to a life-defining trajectory: become a minimalist or a maximalist. “Man of the microbes we found were either minimalists: ultra-streamlined with one job that it does very well alongside a close consortium of collaborators, or it can do a little bit of everything,” Osburn said. “These maximalists are ready for every resource that comes along. If there is an opportunity to make some energy or transform a biomolecule, it is prepared. By looking at its genome, we can tell it has many options. If nutrients are scarce, it can just make its own.” Prof. Magdalena Osburn collects fracture fluids, composed of water and dissolved gases. Credit: Sanford Underground Research Facility The minimalists, Osburn explained, typically share resources with friends, which also have specialized jobs. “Some of these lineages don’t even have genes to make their own lipids, which blows my mind,” Osburn said. “Because how can you make a cell without lipids? It’s sort of like how humans can’t make every amino acid, so we eat protein to get the amino acids that we cannot make on our own. But this is on a more extreme scale. The minimalists are extreme specialists, and all together, they make it work. It’s a lot of sharing and no duplication of effort.” Insights on Earth and beyond As we imagine life beyond our Earth, Osburn said these underground microbes might provide clues for what potentially could be living elsewhere. “I get really excited when I see evidence of microbial life, doing its thing without us, without plants, without oxygen, without surface atmosphere,” she said. “These kinds of life very well could exist deep within Mars or in the oceans of icy moons right now. The forms of life tell us about what might live elsewhere in the solar system.” And, they have implications for our own planet. As the industry looks for locations for long-term carbon storage, for example, many companies are exploring the possibilities for injecting carbon dioxide deep into the ground. As we explore those options, Osburn reminds us not to forget the microbes. “We need to be cognizant of life in the deep subsurface and how human activity, like mining and carbon storage, could affect it,” she said. “If we store carbon dioxide underground, there are microbes that could metabolize it to make methane, for example. There is a biosphere underground that, depending on how it’s perturbed, has the potential to affect the surface.” Reference: “A metagenomic view of novel microbial and metabolic diversity found within the deep terrestrial biosphere at DeMMO: A microbial observatory in South Dakota, USA” by Lily Momper, Caitlin P. Antarctic Penguins A new study reveals that proposed Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in the Southern Ocean could vastly increase protection for key penguin habitats. New research led by BirdLife International, the University of East Anglia (UEA) and British Antarctic Survey highlights how a proposed network of marine protected areas could help safeguard some of the most important areas at sea for breeding Antarctic penguins. The findings, published today in the journal Frontiers in Marine Science, show that if all the Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) proposed around Antarctica were adopted, the permanent conservation of high-quality areas for a flagship group of Antarctic wildlife — the penguins — would increase by between 49% and 100% depending on the species. Adélie penguins on the Antarctic Penisula. Credit: Heather Lynch The Southern Ocean surrounding Antarctica is home to thousands of unique species, including seals, whales and four species of penguins — the Adélie, Chinstrap, Gentoo, and Emperor. Many of these feed on krill, tiny shrimp-like crustaceans, which are also the target of large commercial fisheries, who harvest them for a variety of krill-based products including fish food. Penguins as Environmental Indicators Penguins are often considered an indicator species whose populations reflect the state of the surrounding marine environment. However, many vital penguin habitats remain unprotected, leaving them susceptible to human-related threats such as pollution, overfishing and climate change. Gentoo penguins in the Antarctic Peninsula, where a Marine Protected Area has been proposed. Credit: Derek Oyen The study used a new approach based on colony location, population estimates, and tracking data, to identify globally important areas for penguin species around Antarctica, pinpointing 63 key sites. Known as Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs), they are used by at least 1% of a species’ global population. They represent important foraging grounds, surrounding breeding colonies of several thousands of individuals when penguins congregate to raise their chicks. Adopted MPAs, proposed MPAs and MPA planning area (See Appendix–Study area and key spatial data for additional details) within the study area (CCAMLR MPA planning domains (D) 1, 3, 4, 7, 8, 9), and overlap with identified network of 63 marine IBAs for penguin species. Text black circles adjacent to marine IBAs indicate species present within the marine IBA. Adopted MPAs within the planning domains include, the Ross Sea Region MPA and the South Orkney Islands Southern Shelf MPA (SOISS MPA). Proposed MPAs include the Domain 1 MPA (D1MPA), Weddell Sea MPA Phase 1 (WSMPA Phase 1) and the East Antarctica MPA (EAMPA). Also shown are the Weddell Sea MPA Phase 2 Planning Area (WSMPA Phase 2) and the Voluntary Restricted Zones (VRZs) in which a majority of krill fishing fleets have limited their operations in certain regions during parts of the summer (AP: Antarctic Peninsula: 1 Oct – 1 Feb, GS: Gerlache Strait: 15 Oct – 15 Feb, SSI: South Shetland Islands: 1 Nov – 1 Mar). Inset map area indicated by black bounding box. The international team also examined krill fishery activities over the last 50 years and found that while its range of operation has contracted, a consistently disproportionate amount of krill is being harvested within the globally important areas for penguins compared to the total area in which the fishery operates. The results align with other studies which show that krill fisheries might be directly competing with penguins for crucial foraging resources. “Our findings provide critical evidence about the location and relevance of some of the most important areas globally for chick-rearing adult penguins breeding in Antarctica and nearby islands,” said lead author Dr Jonathan Handley, of Birdlife International. Adélie penguins on the Antarctic Penisula. Credit: Heather Lynch “Over the past five decades, krill fisheries have concentrated into a small number of areas in Antarctic waters, some of which we identified as important penguin foraging grounds. This poses a likely threat for several penguin colonies, especially when they are rearing chicks.” To control the increasing commercial interest in Antarctic fisheries and particularly krill resources, an international convention was established in 1982, governed by the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) — an international convention comprised of 25 Member states, together with the European Union. Monitoring a Chinstrap Penguin Colony in Antarctica. Credit: Christian Aslund The convention envisioned the creation of a network of MPAs around Antarctica since 2002, but since 2016 only two have been implemented. Three more have been under discussion for several years but members have not been able to agree on their formal designation. Proposed MPAs Could Secure Penguin Futures Co-author Dr Aldina Franco, of UEA’s School of Environmental Sciences, said the new study supports the adoption of the proposed MPA network: “Recent studies have shown that krill fisheries could be directly competing with penguins for critical food supplies. The proposed Marine Protected Area network, which has recognized go/no go areas for krill fisheries, can help guarantee that enough krill is available for penguins.” Adélie penguins on the Antarctic Penisula. Credit: Heather Lynch Marie-Morgane Rouyer, who jointly led the research while a Masters student at UEA, added: “Marine resources need to be managed in a sustainable way if we are to guarantee the existence of these emblematic penguin species in the future.” The researchers identified new IBAs that are important for the conservation of Antarctic penguins and examined the overlap with existing and proposed MPAs. They found that Adélie and Emperor penguins currently have 27-31% of the important areas within adopted MPAs, but no Gentoo’s IBAs and only 1% of Chinstrap’s are within them. If all proposed MPAs for Antarctica are adopted then an average of 80% of the important areas for penguin conservation would be within an MPA. This highlights the importance of the proposed network, which ultimately could benefit not only Antarctic penguins, but some of the most unique wildlife on Earth.
