A fascinating native Australian rat-kangaroo, once believed to be extinct, may still be surviving in the harsh and remote Sturt Stony Desert. Researchers from Flinders University have uncovered new insights into its feeding habits that could aid in locating the elusive species. By analyzing the biting capabilities of various small animal skulls, experts in marsupial evolution and ecology have identified the likely diet of the desert rat-kangaroo (Caloprymnus campestris). This research helps pinpoint the most promising areas for monitoring and potentially rediscovering the species. “Rat-kangaroos, like bettongs and potoroos, are an ideal group of animals for testing skull biomechanics because they each have different shaped skulls and specialize in very different food groups,” says Dr. Rex Mitchell, lead author of a new article published in the Journal of Experimental Biology. Credit: Flinders University “We were surprised to find the heftier skull of the desert rat-kangaroo isn’t necessarily adapted for biting into harder foods. When we included the animal’s smaller size into the analysis, the robust features of the desert rat-kangaroo’s skull were only found to be effective enough to handle eating a softer range of foods.” Sightings and Conservation Challenges The latest research could help efforts to ‘rediscover’ the desert rat-kangaroo – known as ‘ngudlukanta’ to the traditional custodians of that Country, the Wangkangurru Yarluyandi people – particularly after unsubstantiated reports of a distinctively small, short-faced, hopping animal in the vicinity of their home range in the Lake Eyre Basin in remote far north-east South Australia into adjacent Queensland. Predation by foxes and cats and competition with rabbits, overstocking with cattle and sheep, and poor fire management have pushed it to extinction. In fact, this species was previously a resurrected ‘Lazarus’ species after its rediscovery in the 1930s.” “So regardless of whether or not the species persists in the Sturt Stony Desert or elsewhere, the story of the desert rat-kangaroo serves as an ongoing reminder that extinction declarations might not always be the end of the story,” she says. New Insights Could Refine Search Efforts This new-found evidence of its feeding habits could help to focus search efforts on specific regions where these plants grow. The desert rat-kangaroo was known to eat mostly leaves of plants, but its short round face led previous researchers to suggest that it could eat harder foods as well if needed, such as seeds and twigs. “Finetuning the search through understanding the animals’ diet better might just resurrect the little desert survivor once more,” adds Dr. Mitchell. Using computer models of historic skeleton specimens, the new study uses a method called Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to test the skull’s ability to handle the forces that happen during biting. The skull of the desert rat-kangaroo was compared with the skulls of short-faced specialists of harder foods like the burrowing bettong, or boodie, and the specialists of softer fungi like the long-nosed potoroo. The researchers say these kinds of studies give valuable insights into the relationship between skull shape and biting ability, with applications to animal behavior, conservation, ecology, evolution, and paleontology. Credit: SciTechDaily.com A new study from the UK Dementia Research Institute reveals that oligodendrocytes, non-neuronal brain cells, produce amyloid beta, a key protein in Alzheimer’s disease. Researchers demonstrated that suppressing amyloid beta production in these cells in a mouse model can alleviate abnormal neuronal hyperactivity, suggesting a new therapeutic approach to treating Alzheimer’s by targeting oligodendrocytes. Oligodendrocyte Involvement in Alzheimer’s Oligodendrocytes are an important source of amyloid beta (Aβ) and play a key role in promoting neuronal dysfunction in Alzheimer’s disease (AD), according to a study published today (July 23, 2024) in the open-access journal PLOS Biology by Rikesh Rajani and Marc Aurel Busche from the UK Dementia Research Institute at University College London, and colleagues. AD is a devastating neurodegenerative disorder affecting millions of people worldwide. Accumulation of Aβ – peptides consisting of 36 to 43 amino acids – is an early critical hallmark of the disease. Recent clinical trials demonstrating a slowing of cognitive and functional decline in individuals with AD who are treated with anti-Aβ antibodies reinforce the important role of Aβ in the disease process. Despite the key cellular effects of Aβ and its essential role in AD, the traditional assumption that neurons are the primary source of toxic Aβ in the brain has remained untested. Credit: Francesca Lam (CC-BY 4.0) In the study, Rajani and Busche showed that non-neuronal brain cells called oligodendrocytes produce Aβ. They further demonstrated that selectively suppressing Aβ production in oligodendrocytes in an AD mouse model is sufficient to rescue abnormal neuronal hyperactivity. The results provide evidence for a critical role of oligodendrocyte-derived Aβ for early neuronal dysfunction in AD. Collectively, the findings suggest that targeting oligodendrocyte Aβ production could be a promising therapeutic strategy for treating AD. Implications for Alzheimer’s Treatment According to the authors, the functional rescue is remarkable given the relatively modest reduction in plaque load that results from blocking oligodendrocyte Aβ production, while blocking neuronal Aβ production leads to a near elimination of plaques – another hallmark of the disease. This small contribution of oligodendrocytes to plaque load could suggest that a main effect of oligodendrocyte-derived Aβ is to promote neuronal dysfunction. Together with the data showing an increased number of Aβ-producing oligodendrocytes in deeper cortical layers of the brains of individuals with AD, these results indicate that oligodendrocyte-derived Aβ plays a pivotal role in the early impairment of neuronal circuits in AD, which has important implications for how the disease progresses and is treated. The increased number of oligodendrocytes in human AD brains also raises the intriguing possibility that these cells could potentially offset reduced Aβ production due to neuronal loss as the disease progresses. Challenging Existing Alzheimer’s Theories The authors add, “Our study challenges the long-held belief that neurons are the exclusive source of amyloid beta in the brain, one of the key toxic proteins that builds up in Alzheimer’s Disease. The “Curious” Creature With No Anus Was Demonstrated To Not Be Related to Humans An international study team has found that a mysterious microscopic creature assumed to be the ancestor of humans actually belongs to a different family tree. The Saccorhytus is a spikey, wrinkly sack with a huge mouth surrounded by spines and holes that were interpreted as pores for gills – a primitive feature of the deuterostome group, from which our own deep ancestors emerged. But a thorough examination of fossils from China that date back 500 million years has shown that the holes surrounding the mouth are actually the bases of spines that split during the process of fossil preservation, finally revealing the evolutionary affinity of the microfossil Saccorhytus. The researchers believe that Saccorhytus is actually an ecdysozoan. Credit: Philip Donoghue et al. “Some of the fossils are so perfectly preserved that they look almost alive,” says Yunhuan Liu, professor in Palaeobiology at Chang’an University, Xi’an, China. “Saccorhytus was a curious beast, with a mouth but no anus, and rings of complex spines around its mouth.” The findings, recently published in the journal Nature, make important amendments to the early phylogenetic tree and the understanding of how life developed. High-Tech 3D Imaging Reveals Saccorhytus’ Anatomy The true story of Saccorhytus’ ancestry lies in the microscopic internal and external features of this tiny fossil. By taking hundreds of X-ray images at slightly different angles, with the help of powerful computers, a detailed 3D digital model of the fossil could be reconstructed. Researcher Emily Carlisle from the University of Bristol’s School of Earth Sciences explained: “Fossils can be quite difficult to interpret and Saccorhytus is no exception. We had to use a synchrotron, a type of particle accelerator, as the basis for our analysis of the fossils. The synchrotron provides very intense X-rays that can be used to take detailed images of the fossils. We took hundreds of X-ray images at slightly different angles and used a supercomputer to create a 3D digital model of the fossils, which reveals the tiny features of its internal and external structures.” The digital models showed that pores around the mouth were closed by another body layer extending through, creating spines around the mouth. “We believe these would have helped Saccorhytus capture and process its prey,” suggests Huaqiao Zhang from the Nanjing Institute of Geology and Palaeontology. Saccorhytus Reclassified as an Ecdysozoan The researchers believe that Saccorhytus is in fact an ecdysozoan: a group that contains arthropods and nematodes. “We considered lots of alternative groups that Saccorhytus might be related to, including the corals, anemones, and jellyfish which also have a mouth but no anus,” said Professor Philip Donoghue of the University of Bristol’s School of Earth Sciences, who co-led the study. “To resolve the problem our computational analysis compared the anatomy of Saccorhytus with all other living groups of animals, concluding a relationship with the arthropods and their kin, the group to which insects, crabs, and roundworms belong.” Saccorhytus’ lack of anus is an intriguing feature of this microscopic, ancient organism. Although the question that springs to mind is the alternative route of digestive waste (out of the mouth, rather undesirably), this feature is important for a fundamental reason in evolutionary biology. How the anus arose – and sometimes subsequently disappeared – contributes to the understanding of how animal body plans evolved. Moving Saccorhytus from deuterosome to ecdysozoan means striking a disappearing anus off the deuterosome case history, and adding it to the ecdysozoan one. “This is a really unexpected result because the arthropod group has a through-gut, extending from mouth to anus.
