在描述數據的增加或現象趨勢的成長擴大時常會用到increase, grow, rise, climb, surge, soar, escalate, peak, expand, widen等動詞，而為了修飾這些動作，我們可以依增長強弱快慢的程度不同使用slowly, slightly, steadily, gradually, moderately, abruptly, dramatically, sharply, steeply, rapidly, significantly, considerably, markedly, substantially, enormously等副詞。另外，上述動詞中如increase, rise, surge, soar, peak等也可作名詞使用。    

1. A noticeable increase in temperatures in the northern hemisphere is during winter   nights.  

北半球氣溫是在冬季夜間有明顯升高。

說明：此句中的increase是名詞，注意其前要加不定冠詞a。 

2. The number of people using English as their second language will grow from 235 million to around 462 million during the next 50 years.

使用英語作為第二語言的人數將在未來50年內從2億3,500萬人成長至4億6,200萬人。
