Trees of Historic Bethlehem: Holiday works of art
or this year’s edition of Trees of Historic Bethlehem, a small military of volunteers adorned two dozen Christmas trees, each depending on a specific bit of artwork - a portray or bit of pottery, an aged map or
quilts - found while in the Historic Bethlehem assortment.

It’s no exaggeration to convey the trees are functions of artwork themselves. The Bethlehem Garden Club adorned 21 synthetic trees of various measurements, together with eleven at the Kemerer Museum of Decorative Arts, six at

Museum curator Lindsey Jancay came up with the plan for this year’s theme linking a bit of artwork to each tree to highlight the Historic Bethlehem artwork selection.

The trees are manifestations of innovative imaginations but they also teach with regard to the Moravians plus the historical past of Bethlehem. One of several trees in the Moravian Museum is connected to a beautiful previous map of
Moravia, the area in Europe from which the settlers of Bethlehem emigrated. Ornaments contain modest maps and also golden angels much like the ones uncovered inside of a corner on the substantial aged map, which happens to be hanging some

“We imagined we would go together with classic,” claims Sharon Donchez, chairwoman on the Backyard Club’s Christmas Decorations Committee. “We pictured ourselves standing in the Civic Centre and looking out with the Star of

The decorators added modest ornaments of houses within the tree and afterwards re-created the angles from the image with strings of lights slashing down the tree and back again and forth “just similar to the angles to the

The Backyard Club tapped its extensive collection of Christmas ornaments from years of decorating but also had to make other decorations and buy some to fit the themes.

The Bethlehem Steel tree for the Kemerer required a trip for some hardware to pair it with a drawing on the Steel plant. For other ornaments, the volunteers used pieces from an aged Erector set, the kind
young children build with.

The music room inside the Moravian Museum has a tree with paper ornaments made of sheet music and an announcement for the Bach Choir of Bethlehem. A tree all decked out in silver ornaments sits near displays of
silver and pewter plates and other dining ware.

“Moravians were very well known for the quality of the craftsmanship,” Jancay says.

The Moravians also were progressive in supporting education for girls and women even back again in Colonial times, and they had a philosophy that combined compassion with not sweating the compact stuff.

Unlike the Moravian Museum and the Kemerer, the cavernous One Sisters House where single Moravian women once lived, is largely bare of artifacts, partly because the temperature and humidity can’t be
controlled. But near among the four embellished trees is a sign with advice that speaks volumes: “In Essentials, Unity. In Non-Essentials, Liberty. In all things, Love.”

Readers to the Trees of Historic Bethlehem can vote for their favorite tree - there’s a small box next to each tree. After the exhibit closes Jan. 13, Donchez and Sandy Gass, co-chairwoman with the
Christmas Decorating Committee, will count the votes. Those people who voted for the winner will have their names entered into a drawing for a gift basket.
