美國老爸台灣媽is a unique comedy that shows the result of a American man and a local Taiwanese girl forming a home in a town with only 35 residents. From hilarious mistakes in love letters to awkward exchanges, the novel is a bumpy love story. Growing up as a Taiwanese girl in America, I understand both countries, and feel comfortable in both. However, I can imagine the countless cultural shock one would receive upon entering the new country for the first time. As 美國老爸台灣媽is based on a true story, it accurately mentions many of the major differences and challenges a person faces when going to a foreign country. The book realistically shows the contrasting beliefs between the two cultures by using misunderstandings, confusion, and even humor. I recommend 美國老爸台灣媽 for its creative language jokes, realistic cultural references, as well as a refreshing, one-of-a-kind story. I really enjoyed reading老鼠與女孩 because it showed an example of using your mind to fight, instead of using force or giving up. When the girl was kidnapped, instead of pitying herself and waiting for help to come, she thought of all the ways she could get away. Finally, seeing that a mouse could go in and out of the locked room, she wrote a note on the napkin, then used her hair band to secure the note on the mouse, and called for help in this unexpected way. Although it is a fiction story, it still made me realize that when in an urgent situation, you need to calm down, and think of the ways to get out. It also made me think of different ways I could get out if I was ever kidnapped. It also showed that you can’t overlook any details, or underestimate anything. |
