CreditL Juliane Lukas In the sports arena, spectators sometimes create a spectacle known as a wave, as successive groups stand up in unison to yell with arms in the air. Now, researchers reporting in Current Biology on December 22, 2021, have shown that small freshwater fish known as sulfur mollies do a similar thing, and for life or death reasons. The collective wave action produced by hundreds of thousands of fish working together helps to protect them from predatory birds. “The surprises came once we realized how many fish can act together in such repeated waves,” said Jens Krause of the Leibniz Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries in Berlin and Cluster of Excellence Science of Intelligence. “There are up to 4,000 fish per square meter and sometimes hundreds of thousands of fish participate in a single fish wave. Fish can repeat these waves for up to two minutes, with one wave approximately every three to four seconds.” When you’re in the vicinity of these unusual fish, found in sulphuric springs that are toxic to most fish, this behavior is hard to miss. That’s because the mollies do the same thing in response to a person nearby. “At first we didn’t quite understand what the fish were actually doing,” said David Bierbach, co-first author along with Carolina Doran and Juliane Lukas, also at the Leibniz Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries and Cluster of Excellence Science of Intelligence. “Once we realized that these are waves, we were wondering what their function might be.” It reminded the researchers of La-Ola or Mexican waves known from football (soccer) stadiums. The presence of many fish-eating birds around the river made them think it likely that the fish waving behavior might be some sort of defense. They decided to investigate the anti-predator benefits of the animals’ wave action. Their studies confirmed that the fish engaged in surface waves that were highly conspicuous, repetitive, and rhythmic. Credit: Juliane Lukas For one of their bird predators, capture probability, too, decreased with wave number. Birds also switched perches in response to wave displays more often than in control treatments, suggesting that they’d decided to direct their attacks elsewhere. Taken together, the findings support an anti-predator function of fish waves. The findings are the first to show that a collective behavior is causally responsible for reducing an animal’s predation risk. As such, the researchers say that this discovery has important implications for the study of collective behavior in animals more broadly. “So far scientists have primarily explained how collective patterns arise from the interactions of individuals but it was unclear why animals produce these patterns in the first place,” Krause said. “Our study shows that some collective behavior patterns can be very effective in providing anti-predator protection.” It’s clear that the fish’s waving reduces birds’ chances of carrying out a successful attack on sulfur mollies. What’s not yet clear is exactly why that is. Do the birds get confused? Do the waves tell them they’ve been noticed and are less likely to succeed in capturing their prey as a result? In future studies, the researchers plan to explore such questions. Credit: Dr. Aidan O’Hanlon The Ongoing Asian Hornet Invasion: Traced Back to a Single Source in Europe In Europe, the Asian (or “Yellow-legged”) Hornet (Vespa velutina) is a predator of insects such as honeybees, hoverflies, and other wasps, and poses serious risks to apiculture, biodiversity, and pollination services. This hornet can measure up to 1.6 inches (4 cm) in length. Although it is not aggressive by nature, like all other social wasps it is capable of delivering a painful sting. Thought to have been introduced into Europe from China in 2004, the Asian Hornet has rapidly spread across the continent. While it has been thus far controlled in Britain, the hornet is well established across mainland Europe and the Channel Islands. In April 2021, the Irish National Parks and Wildlife Service confirmed that a single specimen had been found, ‘alive but dying’ in a private dwelling in Dublin, marking the first Irish record of this species. The circumstances of how the specimen arrived in the Irish capital are not known, but with the area’s extensive regional, national and international connectivity, there can be many possible pathways of introduction. In an Irish context, it was of particular interest to determine whether this individual originated in Europe/Britain or represented a potential new invasion source from within its native range in Southeast Asia. Genetic Analysis and Collaboration The specimen was deposited in the National Museum of Ireland and identified by Dr. Aidan O’Hanlon, who suggested performing genetic analysis to determine its provenance. In collaboration with scientists from the School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences (BEES), University College Cork, and partners on the EU Atlantic Positive Project (which aims to establish Europe-wide methodologies for the control of the Asian hornet), genetic analysis was performed and data were compared with those from specimens provided from several other locations across Europe. The researchers then published their findings in the Journal of Hymenoptera Research. “Earlier work had demonstrated that Asian hornets in Europe apparently shared the same genetic lineage, based on studies of a single gene. We took this a step further and looked at two additional genes which would be more sensitive in detecting variation within the invasive population,” explains Dr. Eileen Dillane of BEES. Data from all three genetic markers confirmed that not only are Asian hornets in Europe of a single pedigree, but are likely descended from a single mated queen hornet that somehow arrived in France in 2004. Furthermore, this lineage has not yet been described within the native range. Implications for Control Efforts “Our research has revealed the remarkable potential for population expansion of eusocial insects in invaded areas, even when original genetic diversity is extremely low,” says Dr. Simon Harrison, who is part of the research team. These findings are both bad news and good news for the control of the Asian hornet in Europe. Whilst single-mated queens can evidently rapidly re-colonize areas from where hornets have been eradicated (for example, where intensive efforts have destroyed all nests in an area), the close relatedness of all individuals of the Asian hornet in Europe offers hope for eradication methods based on biological control. In the Irish context, it is unlikely that this is the beginning of a larger-scale invasion, as the climate and habitat landscape of Ireland is likely less than ideal for the Asian hornet, which requires higher summer temperatures and a greater supply of energy-rich food. “Nonetheless, climate change is likely to increase the threat of a successful invasion in the future, so vigilance against this species must be maintained,” the authors of the study advise. Credit: Qi Xie Researchers have identified two key genes, SbSLT1 and SbSLT2, that help sorghum resist Striga by preventing its germination. Chinese scientists have identified two key genes that enable sorghum to resist Striga, a parasitic plant responsible for major crop losses. This discovery not only sheds light on sorghum’s natural defense mechanisms but also demonstrates how AI can predict critical amino acid sites in strigolactone (SL) transporters—insights that could enhance resistance to parasitic plants in various crops. The study, published in Cell, was led by Prof. Qi Xie’s team at the Institute of Genetics and Developmental Biology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, in collaboration with five other institutions. Striga, commonly known as “witchweed,” and other parasitic plants like Orobanche depend on host plants for nutrients and water, significantly reducing crop yields and disrupting agricultural ecosystems. Striga alone infests more than 50 million hectares of farmland across Africa, causing $1.5 billion in annual economic losses and impacting over 300 million people. In China, Striga is found in regions such as Guangdong and Yunnan, while Orobanche threatens crops like sunflowers and tomatoes in Inner Mongolia and Xinjiang. How Striga Infects Sorghum Sorghum is one of the plants susceptible to Striga infestation. Sorghum roots release SLs, a class of plant hormones that help recruit mycorrhizal fungi for nutrient uptake. Unfortunately, Striga seeds dormant in the soil detect these SL signals, which trigger Striga germination and subsequent infestation of the host plant. In this study, the researchers analyzed transcriptome data from sorghum roots under phosphorus-deficient conditions and strigolactone (SL) treatment separately. The scientists identified two ABCG family SL transporter genes: Sorghum bicolor SL transporter 1 (SbSLT1) and Sorghum bicolor SL transporter 2 (SbSLT2). They determined that the SbSLT1 and SbSLT2 proteins control the efflux of SLs and knocking out the associated genes inhibits SL secretion. Under these conditions, Striga is unable to germinate and infect the host.\ AI-Powered Predictions and Cross-Species Implications AI-based predictions further identified a conserved phenylalanine residue critical for SL transport. This residue is found not only in sorghum, but also in SL transporters across other monocot crops like maize, rice, and millet, as well as dicotyl crops such as sunflowers and tomatoes, suggesting a conserved mechanism across species. Molecular biology and cellular biology experiments demonstrate the key function of this residue. Field trials conducted in Striga-prone areas showed that sorghum with knocked-out SbSLT1 and SbSLT2 genes exhibited 67–94% lower infestation rates and 49–52% less yield loss. These findings offer valuable genetic resources and technical support for breeding Striga-resistant sorghum varieties. The researchers emphasized that the discovery of SbSLT1 and SbSLT2 could provide crucial tools for combating parasitic plants, potentially addressing food security challenges in countries severely affected by parasitic plants, especially African and Asian countries, thereby contributing to regional peace and stability. Future research will focus on validating these genes in crops such as maize, tomato, and millet, with the goal of advancing the commercialization of Striga-resistant crops.
