(Rainer Maria Rilke)

1

PART ONE

-1 -

Tree arising! O pure ascendance!
Orpheus Sings! Towering tree within the ear!
Everywhere stillness, yet in this abeyance:
seeds of change and new beginnings near.

Creatures of silence emerged from the clear
unfettered forest, from dens, from lairs.
Not from shyness, this silence of theirs;
nor from any hint of fear,

simply from listening. Brutal shriek and roar
dwindled in their hearts. Where stood a mere
hut to house the passions of the ear,

constructed of longing darkly drear,
haphazardly wrought from front to rear,
you built them a temple at listenings core.

PART TWO
-5 -

Flower muscle of the anemone
slowly opening in meadow dawn
until into her core the polyphony
of clamorous Heavens light is drawn,

into the motionless blossom stars tight
womb of endless receiving, once in awhile
so overpowered by fulness that twilights
call to rest finds you barely able

to contract your wide sprung flower --
petals for nights resuscitation:
you, of countless worlds, the will and power!

We, the violent, outlive your farewell.
But when, in which latent incarnation,
shall we at last become receptacles?

(Rene Char)

LIGHTNING VICTORY

The bird tills the soil,
The serpent sows,
Death, enriched.
Praises the harvest.

Pluto in the sky!

In ourselves the explosion.
There in myself only.
Mad and deaf, how could I be more so?

No more second self, nor changing face, no more season of flame and season of shadow!

The lepers come down with the slow snow.

Suddenly love, the equal of terror,
With a hand I had never seen, puts an end to the fire, straightens the sun, reshapes the beloved.

Nothing had heralded so strong an existence.

(Yves Bonnefoy)

Comment peut-on mourir ?

LOW VOICES AND PHOENIX

A Voice
You were right to open, it came by night,
It set the stone lamp beside you.
It laid you down anew in your usual place,
Making strange night of your living gaze.

Another Voice
The first arrival shaped like a bird
Raps at my window in the midnight of my watch.
I open, and caught in its snow I fall
And the house vanishes where I was keeping a great fire.

A Voice
She was laid out, her heart bared. At midnight
Under the thick foliage of the dead
A lost moon began preying on her,
The familiar house where everything began again.

Another Voice
With one gesture he built me a cathedral of cold,
0 Phoenix! Frightening summit of trees riven
By frost! I was falling turning like a torch hurled
Into the me night where the Phoenix re-forms.

(Eugenio Montale)

To Spend the Afternoon

To spend the afternoon, absorbed and pale,

beside a burning garden wall;

to hear, among the stubble and the thorns,

the blackbirds cackling and the rustling snakes.

On the cracked earth or in the vetch
to spy on columns of red ants
now crossing, now dispersing,
atop their miniature heaps.

To ponder, peering through the leaves,
the heaving of the scaly sea
while the cicadas wavering screech
goes up from balding peaks.

And walking out into the sunlights glare
to feel with melancholy wonder
how all of life and its travail
is in this following a wall
topped with the shards of broken bottles.

(Octavio Paz)

Exclamation

Stillness
        not on the branch
in the air
        Not in the air
in the moment
             hummingbird.

(Octavio Paz)

HERE

My steps along this street
resound

       in another street
in which
         I hear my steps
passing along this street
in which

Only the mist is real

The Collected Poems of Octavio Paz, 1957-1987
