Adonis: Selected Poems (The Margellos World Republic of Letters) Paperback – April 24, 2012
by Adonis (Author), Khaled Mattawa (Translator)

The first major career-spanning collection of the poems of Adonis, widely acknowledged as the most important poet working in Arabic today

Born in Syria in 1930, Adonis is one of the most celebrated poets of the Arabic-speaking world. His poems have earned international acclaim, and his influence on Arabic literature has been likened to that of T. S. Eliot’s on English-language verse. This volume serves as the first comprehensive survey of Adonis’s work, allowing English readers to admire the arc of a remarkable literary career through the labors of the poet’s own handpicked translator, Khaled Mattawa.

THE FALL

I live between fire and plague
with my language, with these mute worlds.
I live in an apple orchard and a sky,
in the first happiness and the drollness
of life with Eve,
master of those cursed trees,
master of fruit.

I live between clouds and sparks,
in a stone that grows, in a book
that knows secrets, and knows the fall.

I imagine I am the sound of singing
rolling in waves among the bending reeds
I mix with light in the sun’s chamber in the tents of the trees

I hide
among springs sometimes
and sometimes I descend the slope
of depths I cannot see

Ah love-a spring
falling aslant from the heights of fatigue

(

Life took us to it, tossed us
in the nets of its storms and gave its breast
to the windows of our days

When I ask myself: What did we take? and I see
I see nothing in the windows except nets

Could we have deluded ourselves
        like our ancestors
that were out of the nets? Are we
        like our ancestors
who still love the life that loved its chains?
