You may be too young to know this rather sorrowful incident that happened within sixteen hours across the strait in early 1966.  I do hope never shall we see anything like that happen again:

I was a freshman in college when the incident took place.  My first reaction was why KMT government should have hastened to send the three "insurgents" to Taiwan just for quick political propaganda.  Some gossips spread then, and one of them was CCP strictly ordered that amphibious plane must be shot down no matter at any cost, and that inhibited KMT more advanced fighters from protecting the plane.  Another gossip said Chiang Kai-shek was so raged that he ripped his men apart, "Are you guys really loyal to me?  Those three young men are loyal to me!"
