南北山頭多墓田，   

On  top of hills  graves are lain   from south to north,  

清明祭掃各紛然。   

where in this Tomb Sweeping Day people come forth. 

紙灰飛作白蝴蝶，   

Burning fake money drift in the air like white butterflies;  

淚血染成紅杜鵑。   

weeping their  bitter tears like  grief-stricken cuckoos  are the  mourners.

日落狐狸眠冢上，     

 Sleeping on top of the lone graves  are foxes as the sun sets  ,

夜歸兒女笑燈前。    

while chatting merrily before the lamp are the bereaved families.

人生有酒須當醉，   

So  intoxicate yourselves while the wine  is available before you pass away,     

一滴何曾到九泉。 

for you will not enjoy a single drop that is tributed on this very day.
