The movie is the film I watched in the flight that carried me back to Taipei  yesterday.  It is actually the biography of Xiao Hong(蕭紅) illustrated in the form of movie clips.

Xiao Hong, one of the most influential women writers in modern China, was born in 1911, the very last year of imperial China, and she died at only 31 in 1942, the toughest time of China in Resistence-Against-Jap war and WWII.  Was the period of her time in this world "The Golden Era" to her or to China?  It depends on different perspectives.  To China, it was the worst time, yet also the best time for her restructuring from the bottom to the top; to Xiao Hong herself, it was a shame that her life has been so short as a bright shooting star, but she already left a lot of immortal legacies to us.  Who knows what else would have happened to her should have she lived longer.  Since she was categorized as a left-wing writer, I could not read her any of her writings in my school days.  Later on, I got to know her and her "生死場" from a book of selective novels of modern China.

Some other great writers of modern China such as Lu Xun(魯迅), Ding Ning(丁玲), and many others are also portrayed in the film.   Certainly Xiao Jun(蕭軍), along with his long romantic entanglement with Xiao Hong, was one important part of the storyline, but their love affairs were not displayed as that of some gossip people may be interested in.  FYI, in the film Xiao Hong is portrayed by Tang Wei(湯唯).  Well, Tang does not look a lot like Xiao at all, but her performance is acceptable.
