人生若只如初見，

If time stops at the moment when two lovers first meet,

何事秋風悲畫扇。

then there will not be a jilted one out of either side.

等閒變卻故人心，

All things are subject to change as time draws on,

卻道故人心易變。

not just the owners of the hearts that are liable to change only.

驪山語罷清宵半，

Even the solemn pledge of love made with deep obssession,

淚雨霖鈴終不怨。

Emperor Minghuang of Tang was unable to keep his words to his endeared concubine. 

何如薄倖錦衣郎，

As noble as an almighty emperor he had to harden his heart,

比翼連枝當日願。

as to break his vow of eternal love made on that romantic day.
