From the following photos, you may think the Asian-faced young lady, the gold medalist of 100m butterfly in the world championship, 2019 now is ongoing at Gwangju, S Korea, is a Chinese or a Japanese women’s athlete. (She is more like Chinese.). You are all wrong. She is a 19-years-old Chinese-Canadian, studying in U of Michigan, and representing Canada to the tournament. Her name is Maggie Macneil, no any connection with a Chinese one. But she is genuinely an ethnic Chinese girl alright. According to some reports, 19 years ago Macneil family from Canada adopted her from an orphanage of Guangxi in China Mainland; most likely she was a deserted infant then. In her new home, loving Macneil family brought her up and assisted her to be a top-notch swimmer and to study in a first class college. Now I have several questions to ask. What if she were brought up(or unable to be brought up) from that orphanage, what would she be now? Who were the real parents that gave birth to but deserted her? Were they the victims of "One Child Policy" or just an irresponsible couple? Are there still deserted orphans like her prevailing in China Mainland nowadays? (I really hope not.) Maggie Macneil story is a bitter-sweet one. There is one more truth we can find from her. Conventional belief thinks the constitution of Chinese people is inferior to Caucasians’. But from the photos, you can clearly see Maggie is much shorter than other two Caucasian winners, let alone even much shorter arms and smaller palms, which must be a great disadvantage in swimming. (FYI, the silver medalist is a Swedish athlete, a long-standing queen in butterfly.) So, as long as we Chinese own ourselves good nutrition, scientific training, and reasonable system, likewise we can absolutely compete with any other countries in any items of sports. Maggie is also a lovely girl. She and other two winners wrote “Ikee Rikako(池江璃花子)Never Give Up” in their palms to bless that leukemia-inflicted Japanese swimming genius.
