Neurons produce rhythmic patterns of electrical activity or oscillations in the brain, driven primarily by memory, according to a recent study. Contrary to previous beliefs, the research showed that these theta oscillations in the hippocampus were more prevalent when individuals were remembering events than experiencing them, highlighting memory as a key driver in theta activity and offering potential pathways for treating brain damage and cognitive impairments. The findings may establish the groundwork for therapy for cognitive impairment and help improve memory. Neurons create rhythmic electrical activity patterns within the brain. A pressing question in neuroscience is the primary driver of these rhythmic signals, known as oscillations. Researchers from the University of Arizona discovered that merely recalling events could set off these oscillations, even more than experiencing the events themselves. The research, published in the journal Neuron, specifically focused on theta oscillations. These occur in the brain’s hippocampus during activities such as exploration, navigation, and sleep. The hippocampus plays a crucial role in the brain’s ability to remember the past. Memory, Not Experience, Drives Theta Activity Prior to this study, it was believed that the external environment played a more important role in driving theta oscillations, said Arne Ekstrom, professor of cognition and neural systems at the UArizona Department of Psychology and senior author of the study. But Ekstrom and his collaborators found that memory generated in the brain is the main driver of theta activity. “Surprisingly, we found that theta oscillations in humans are more prevalent when someone is just remembering things, compared to experiencing events directly,” said lead study author Sarah Seger, a graduate student in the Department of Neuroscience. The results of the study could have implications for treating patients with brain damage and cognitive impairments, including patients who have experienced seizures, stroke, and Parkinson’s disease, Ekstrom said. Memory could be used to create stimulations from within the brain and drive theta oscillations, which could potentially lead to improvements in memory over time, he said. UArizona researchers collaborated on the study with researchers from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, including neurosurgeon Dr. Brad Lega and research technician Jennifer Kriegel. The researchers recruited 13 patients who were being monitored at the center in preparation for epilepsy surgery. As part of the monitoring, electrodes were implanted in the patient’s brains to detect occasional seizures. The researchers recorded the theta oscillations in the hippocampus of the brain. The patients participated in a virtual reality experiment, in which they were given a joystick to navigate to shops in a virtual city on a computer. When they arrived at the correct destination, the virtual reality experiment was paused. The researchers asked the participants to imagine the location at which they started their navigation and instructed them to mentally navigate the route they just passed through. The researchers then compared theta oscillations during initial navigation to participants’ subsequent recollection of the route. During the actual navigation process using the joystick, the oscillations were less frequent and shorter in duration compared to oscillations that occurred when participants were just imagining the route. So, the researchers conclude that memory is a strong driver of theta oscillations in humans. Harnessing Memory to Enhance Brain Function One way to compensate for impaired cognitive function is by using cognitive training and rehabilitation, Ekstrom said. “Basically, you take a patient who has memory impairments, and you try to teach them to be better at memory,” he said. In the future, Ekstrom is planning to conduct this research in freely walking patients as opposed to patients in beds and find how freely navigating compares to memory with regard to brain oscillations. “Being able to directly compare the oscillations that were present during the original experience, and during a later retrieval of that is a huge step forward in the field in terms of designing new experiments and understanding the neural basis of memory,” Seger said. Research published in the scientific journal Current Biology reveals that sexual parasitism in anglerfishes originated during a major global warming event that led to their transition from the ocean floor to the deep sea. This adaptation facilitated rapid species diversification in the midnight zone of the oceans, influenced by both genetic and anatomical factors. Evolution of Sexual Parasitism in Anglerfish Members of the vertebrate group including anglerfishes are unique in possessing a characteristic known as sexual parasitism, in which males temporarily attach or permanently fuse with females to mate. Now, researchers published a study on May 23 in the journal Current Biology showing that sexual parasitism arose during a time of major global warming and rapid transition for anglerfishes from the ocean floor to the deep, open sea. The findings have implications for understanding evolution and the effects that global warming may have in the deep sea, according to the researchers. Anglerfish Evolution: A Journey From the Ocean Floor “Our results show how the iconic deep-sea anglerfishes evolved from ancestors that walked along the ocean floor using modified pelvic fins,” says Chase D. Brownstein of Yale University. “Just like whales went back down in the water, anglerfishes jumped back up into the open water from walking ancestors on the deep ocean floor. “We show that this happened more recently than thought after the extinction of the dinosaurs. After that, anglerfishes rapidly diversified in the ‘midnight’ (bathypelagic) zone of the oceans, which is likely a result of the ecological opportunities afforded by this new habitat. We show how the evolution of one of the strangest aspects of anglerfish biology, sexual parasitism, likely facilitated, but did not directly cause, this diversification.” Genetic Insights Into Deep-Sea Diversification Brownstein and colleagues were curious to understand how key ecological innovations relate to the evolution of new species. Rather than considering a trait in isolation, they wanted to understand how combinations of features interact. They focused their attention on anglerfishes, which they describe as one of the most famous and species-rich denizens of the deep sea. To better understand the relationships and ages of anglerfish species, they analyzed genome-scale DNA sequence data from over 100 species together with fossil evidence. Their analyses show that the rapid transition of ancestrally bottom-dwelling, or benthic, anglerfishes into open-ocean, or pelagic, habitats occurred during a period of major global warming 50 to 35 million years ago. They also report that this transition coincided with the origins of sexual parasitism, which is thought to increase the probability of successful reproduction once a mate has been found in the midnight zone. The Unusual Trait of Sexual Parasitism “We show that this sexual parasitism trait is ancestral for all deep-sea anglerfishes and appears to have evolved as a synergistic combination of ancestral lability in the genetic basis of the adaptive immune system and body size dimorphism,” Brownstein says, noting that female anglerfishes do not reject males as foreign bodies, allowing fusion. “This explains the origins of such an odd trait.” “I was pretty excited by the implication that sexual parasitism is really a combination of a bunch of different traits from different physiological, anatomical, and other systems that came together,” he says. Future Research and the Impact of Global Warming The findings provide a new level of insight into the evolution of life in the deep sea. They also might be a warning that global warming today could modify the course of deep-sea life for millions of years to come. The researchers now plan to look at more groups of deep-sea fishes to reconstruct their evolutionary histories. “We are really at the starting line for investigations of the evolution of most deep-sea life forms, and the genomic data we have now for some groups suggests evolutionary histories in the deep sea might be very different from our initial hypotheses,” Brownstein says. “For example, the idea that all deep-sea life is ancient is clearly wrong; anglerfishes only swam into the open waters of the bathypelagic zone in the last 50 to 60 million years. Cuckoo wasps – also called emerald wasps – are some of the most beautiful insects we have, with colorful exteriors that shine like jewels. However, these beauties have also created a lot of headaches. “Normally we distinguish insects from each other by their appearance, but cuckoo wasps are so similar to each other that it makes it difficult,” says Frode Ødegaard. Ødegaard is an insect researcher at the NTNU University Museum and belongs to the European research group that has now described this recent contribution to species diversity. The new species is very rare, and is only a single specimen has been found on the Lista peninsula in Agder county in Norway. Credit: Jake Bryant For more than 200 years, insect researchers have struggled to sort cuckoo wasps into the right “species boxes,” and to determine which characteristics are variations within a species and which are species-specific differences. Chemical language in insects In the last 10 years, DNA barcoding has brought about a major breakthrough by making it possible to distinguish different species of cuckoo wasps from each other by looking at the differences in their genetic material. “But it’s not always that easy, either. In this case, we had two cuckoo wasps with microscopic differences in appearance and very small differences in DNA,” Ødegaard says. “The cuckoo wasp is an insect with above-average linguistic abilities.” “The next step was to look at the language of each of the wasps to find out if they belonged to different species,” he says. Insects communicate with each other through pheromones – in other words, they have a chemical language. Very closely related species often have completely different languages to prevent them from interbreeding. Linguistic parasite The cuckoo wasp is an insect with above-average linguistic abilities. They are parasites, which means that they behave like cuckoos and lay their eggs in the nests of other bees and wasps. The larvae grow quickly and hatch before the host’s eggs. Then they eat the eggs, the larvae, and the food supply that the host has arranged in the nest. “When you live as a parasite, it’s important not to be discovered, and therefore the cuckoo wasp has also learned the language of its host,” says Ødegaard. Credit: Arnstein Staverløkk, NINA, CC BY3 By conducting an ever-so-small language study, the researchers were able to discover that the two almost identical cuckoo wasps did indeed belong to different species. They use different hosts – and that means that they also speak completely different languages. “The evolutionary development associated with sponging off another species happens very fast. That’s why you can have two species that are really similar genetically but still belong to different species,” says Ødegaard. Honored to name the new species When a new species is described, it has to be given a name. Frode Ødegaard had the good fortune to receive the honor of naming the newcomer. “A naming competition was announced among researchers in Europe who work with cuckoo wasps, and then the proposals that came in were voted on. It turned out my proposal actually got the most votes!” Ødegaard says. “As mentioned, the new wasp is very similar to another species called Chrysis brevitarsis, so the new species was named Chrysis parabrevitarsis, which means ‘the one standing next to brevitarsis’.” Ødegaard was also responsible for giving the species its slightly simpler Norwegian name of sporegullveps. He makes no secret of the fact that he found it great to be able to name a new species. “In a way, you have to think from the perspective of eternity, because that species will always have that name. There’s something very fundamental about it.” Conservation biologist and mass murderer The picture at the top, as mentioned, shows the only known specimen of this cuckoo wasp. So it may seem both morally reprehensible and unnecessary that this one lone individual was stuck onto a needle. “Even with today’s advanced methods, using live animals for studies like this isn’t possible, but collecting individual specimens, fortunately, has no impact on the population,” Ødegaard says. “The insects have enormous reproductive potential, and the size and quality of the habitats are what determine the viability of the population, not whether any specimens are eaten by birds or collected by an insect researcher.” He adds that the collected insects are absolutely crucial for researchers to be able to map and describe their diversity and thus take care of viable populations for posterity.
